2 OUR SAVIOUR S LUTHERAN CHURCH About Us Our Saviour s Lutheran Church, a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, has been firmly planted in the Phillips Community since A Reconciling in Christ (RIC) congregation, we celebrate our diversity of age, race, gender identities, sexual orientations, culture and citizenship. Welcome, Visitors! Welcome to all visitors and guests. If you live here, we hope you ll consider joining. If you are here for a short time, we hope you ll feel at home. Please pick up a copy of our newsletter, The Sentinel, from the entry table. Need hearing assistance or larger print? Please ask an usher. Children are welcome to participate fully in worship. We feel strongly that children s spirituality develops through experience. In our community, children lead as ushers, musicians, readers and communion servers. We offer kid s worship folders. We expect that children will behave as children--giggles, wiggles and all. Kids (and their parents) sometimes need a break. In our reading corner in the Hospitality Center we offer books, a few toys and more. Kids and parents are invited to go in and out of the sanctuary as needed. Safe Church. For the safety of all our children, we ask that children be attended at all times. Please accompany your child to the bathroom and reading corner. Copies of our Safe Church Policy are available from the church office. Transportation and Parking Parking Handicap access is available in the small lot at the back of the church, accessed from the alley. Sunday morning we may use the Hope Academy lot (across Chicago Ave). The Phillips Eye Institute ramp on 24 th Street (1/2 block west of the church) is public; the fee is $4. Please note street parking is limited to residents only during certain hours. Buses. Route 5 runs on Chicago Avenue right in front of the church. An asterisk (*) indicates times in worship when the congregation is invited to stand Time after Epiphany Blessings and curses abound on the sixth Sunday after Epiphany. We would do well to listen closely to whom the blessed ares and the woe tos are directed and to find our place in the crowd among those who desire to touch Jesus. The risen Christ stands among us in the mystery of the holy supper with an invitation to live in Christ and in Christ s power to heal and forgive. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY We open ourselves to God in prayer, gathered to listen for the Spirit s work through the themes of the day. Our Amen means, May it be so. *Prayer of the Day Word SILENCE Kids will make noise. It s okay. We all need to learn to practice silence. Breathe, center, make space to receive. Silence for reflection First Reading Jeremiah 17:5-10 Thus says YAHWEH: Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength, whose hearts turn away from God. They shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when relief comes. They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. Blessed are those who trust in God, whose trust is in God. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit. 4

5 The heart is devious above all else; it is perverse who can understand it? I YAHWEH test the mind and search the heart, to give to all according to their ways, according to the fruit of their doings. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Psalm 1 All Refrain; Reader Verse Second Reading 1 Corinthians 15:12-20 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that God raised Christ whom God did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have died in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. READINGS We listen to the poetry and stories of Scripture set alongside each other, us, and the events of this week. In our listening, we are in holy conversation with our ancestors in the faith. 6 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION We rise in body or spirit to greet the good news and acknowledge the power of Christ in this Word. *Gospel Acclamation The holy gospel according to Luke the 6th chapter. Glory to you, O God. *Gospel Reading Luke 6:17-26 Jesus came down with the twelve and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them. Then Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son-of-Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. This is the Good News. Praise to you, O Christ. 6

7 Children s Sermon After the children s sermon, children may go with their teacher to children s church. Or, families may decide to keep children in worship. We love all ages in worship and leave it to the families to decide. Sermon *Hymn of the Day Canticle of the Turning #723 *Prayers of the People (Each petition will conclude with, Gracious God, in your mercy and the congergation responds, you hear our prayer. ) Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. SERMON What is the good news for us? The preacher leans on the Holy Spirit to break open the readings, bringing a fresh and faithful word. HYMN OF THE DAY The assembly becomes the preacher; God s Word is proclaimed in song. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE We entrust our prayers for all creation to the One who hears our cries. *Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. Meal (The people greet each other: Peace be with you. ) Gathering our Gifts All present, even those who contribute through automatic payments, are invited to lay hands upon the collection plate symbolizing their contributions. PEACE Having been reconciled to God through Christ, God gives us the ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor. 5:18-19) for the sake of the world. We share a sign of Christ s peace and reconciliation with one another. OFFERING We offer our money as a sign of the giving of our whole selves in grateful response for all God s gifts. 7

8 *Offertory Hymn Come, Bring Them to the Table *Offering Prayer Let us pray. God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Sovereign. Amen. GREAT THANKSGIVING Our hearts are lifted in gratitude. At the table we are not remembering something that happened, we are celebrating something that is happening in and among us now. *The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy we praise your name and join their unending hymn: SANCTUS Hosanna literally means, Help, now! We plead for God to come in fullness. *Sanctus 8

9 *Eucharistic Proclamation and Prayer with every breath. We praise you, O God. into the future. We bless you, O God. with us now. We thank you, O God. we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. in your church, without end. Amen. *Lord s Prayer Our Mother, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER At the table we tell our family stories. At the heart of this story is Jesus, the Word made flesh, who promises to be present in the bread and wine we share. THE LORD S PRAYER Christ s prayer becomes our prayer. We address God as an intimate parent; we are children in need of food, forgiveness, and deliverance. Invitation to Communion 9

10 COMMUNION You are what you eat! Receive the bread in your hand and express your affirmation by saying Amen - Let it be so. Distribution All are welcome at the table. After you have received the bread, you may dip it into one of the cups: the dark liquid is wine, the light liquid is grape juice. Or, you may eat the bread and then drink from the last cup which is a common cup of wine. A gluten free wafer is also available. Those who do not yet commune may come forward for a blessing.
