Yet none of this power is unilateral; it all must be received by faith. Jesus asks his disciples to go out without money or supplies, so that they will be dependent on how others receive them. When we are sent from the assembly to witness and to heal, we are asked to be vulnerable, to be dependent on the reception of others. The Spirit always operates in the between: between Jesus and his Abba, between Jesus and us, between you and me, between us and those to whom we are sent. A Story that Invites Us All invitations to stand or kneel are for those who are able. P: Forgive us when we don t follow where you are leading us. All: Forgive us when we neglect to serve the ones who need us. P: Be our strength. All: Be our guide. P: Lead us back to you, that we might embrace your power and strength, and bring your justice and righteousness to our world. 4 The Story that Shapes and Forms Us READING... 2 Corinthians 12:2-10 Christians do not boast of their own accomplishments. Rather, Christian boasting focuses attention on how the power of Christ is present in our lives, especially in times of weakness and vulnerability. No matter what our circumstances in life, Christ s grace is sufficient for us. THE PRAYER OF THE DAY L: God of unearthly wisdom, we take offence at your humanity; All: we lose our faith that you can change us: L: come to us who are your own; All: convert our inward-looking eyes and take us on the road where all is lost and all is gained, through Jesus Christ, the prophet. Amen. 7 I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. And I know that such a person whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat. On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me, even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong. L: Word of God, word of life. 5 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION P: The Holy Gospel according to Mark, the sixth chapter. All: Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL... Mark 6:1-13 At home and abroad, Jesus and his disciples encounter resistance as they seek to proclaim God s word and relieve affliction. [Jesus] came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us? And they took offense at him. Then Jesus said to them, 9 Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house. And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them. So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. A Story that Feeds Us INVITATION TO OFFERING L: Jesus says, Take nothing for the journey no bread, no bags, no money. Rather, bring yourselves, totally and completely. Bring your love, your gifts, your service, your leadership. All: May this be so as we share our offerings of monetary gifts in this time together. HOMILY... Pastor Tim APOSTLE S CREED L: Let us confess our faith in the words of the Apostle s Creed: All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. 7 OFFERTORY PRAYER L: Bless these gifts, All: that they may serve your world with power. L: Bless our lives, All: that we may serve your world with love. THE PRAYERS L: Growing in faith and discipleship, we give thanks for God s merciful compassion as we pray for the church, the world, and all in need. Lord God, you breathe life into the dust of the earth. Bless the land and all who work it. Bring relief to areas of drought and famine. Send healing rains and cooling breezes to places scorched by sun and heat. Lord, in your mercy, All: hear our prayer. L: Lord God, when the nations are rebellious, raise up prophets and leaders to proclaim your way of justice. Provide for the needs of refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers, and exiles. Protect all who live in areas of war and conflict. Lord, in your mercy, All: hear our prayer. L: Lord God, your grace is sufficient to bring wholeness to human weakness. Restore hope to those suffering hardships, persecutions, and calamities. Strengthen all who are fragile in body, mind, or spirit. Lord, in your mercy, All: hear our prayer. L: Lord God, renew our commitment to the work of hospitality. Help us to offer a caring welcome to visitors and to those returning to the church. Help us to be living examples of your grace and your generosity. Lord, in your mercy, 13 All: hear our prayer. L: God of all, hear now the prayers of our heart said either silently or aloud. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER L: God is with you. All: And also with you. L: Lift up your hearts All: We lift them up to God. L: Let us give thanks to God. All: It is right to give thanks and praise. P: Eternal God, in the abundance of your love you have caused all things to be; All: from dust and spirit you have woven our humanity; P: in all our wanderings you never cease to call us to fullness of life. All: You gave us Jesus, son of Mary, the bread of life broken for the world; P: he fed us and feasted with us, he healed us and suffered for us; All: his dying and rising have set us free from the poverty of sin and the famine of death. P: Therefore, with all whom you have made, cherished, and called, with all who hunger for your kingdom and will not rest until all your children are fed, with the broken saints and redeemed sinners of all the ages, we take up the song of your praise: 14

8 P: Therefore, in our eating and drinking we are filled with the life-giving presence of Christ; All: we proclaim him as creation s host, transforming poverty into plenty in the reckless generosity of love. P: Inspire us with the hope that one day death and greed will be no more and people without number will come from east and west, north and south to share the kingdom meal. All: We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom and in whom in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory be yours, Mother of blessings, for ever and ever. Amen. P: We ask that your Holy Spirit will fall upon us and upon these gifts, that these fragile, earthly things may be to us the body and blood of our lord and brother, Jesus Christ; who, on the night that he was betrayed, gathered with his faltering friends for a meal that tasted of freedom. Calling them to his table, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me. In the same way after supper, he took the cup, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, to remember me. As on that night, so here and now he offers himself in touch and taste beyond all words can hold. Great is the mystery of faith. All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. 15 THE LORD S PRAYER P: As you are one with us, O Christ, make us one with you as we pray as you taught... All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. FRACTION RITE P: Here is food that satisfies, the taste of communion. Here is wine pouring free, the washing away of fear. Here is life abundant, a table of peace for all. All: May this peace be in us and among us, a sign of hope for a world renewed. The ushers will invite you to the Lord s Table after the Lamb of God is sung. 16

10 A Story that Sends Us Out to Love and Serve Singing Bowl POST COMMUNION BLESSING P: Creator God, bless this gift of bread with the yeast of your love. All: Flow through this gift of wine with your life-giving grace. P: As we receive these gifts, make us one with you through the power of your Holy Spirit. All: Nurture our lives, that we may be loaves of your generous abundance. P: Pour your grace into our hearts, that we may be vines of loving nourishment for one another and for a world in need of growth and strength. All: In Christ s name, we pray. Amen. POST COMMUNION PRAYER L: Loving God, in this meal you sustain the weary and heal the broken.
