3 FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER The image of the Good Shepherd shows us how the risen Christ bring us to life. It is the relationship between the shepherd and the sheep, one of mutual knowledge and love, that gives the shepherd authority. The shepherd s willingness to lay down his life for the sheep shows his love. The reading from first John illustrates what it means to lay down our lives for one another by the example of sharing our wealth with any sister or brother in need. 4 *PRAYER OF THE DAY L: Let us pray. O Christ, good shepherd of the sheep, you seek the lost and guide us into your fold. C: Feed us, and we shall be satisfied; heal us, and we shall be whole. Make us one with you, for you live and reign with the Source of Life and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. - Quiet reflection FIRST READING Acts 4:5-12 The next day their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. When they had made the prisoners stand in their midst, they inquired, By what power or by what name did you do this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders, if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed, let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders; it has become the cornerstone. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved. 2

PSALM 23 Refrain All; Verses Cantors SECOND READING 1 John 3:16-24 We know love by this, that Christ laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. How does God s love abide in anyone who has the world s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help? Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before God whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and God knows everything. Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God; and we receive from God whatever we ask, because we obey the commandments and do what pleases God. And this is God s commandment, that we should believe in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and love one another, just as Jesus has commanded us. All who obey God s commandments abide in God, and God abides in them. And by this we know that God abides in us, by the Spirit that God has given us. 3

C: Glory to you, O Lord. *GOSPEL John 10:11-18 Spark Story Bible Jesus said: I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as Abba God knows me and I know Abba God. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 4

7 For this reason Abba God loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Abba. L: This is the Good News. C: Praise to you, O Christ. 10 *LORD S PRAYER (adapted) We join with other Christian communities in language both faithful and fresh to speak this ancient prayer. L: Together, let us pray. C: Heavenly Father, Heavenly Mother, holy and blessed is your true name. We pray for your reign of peace to come. We pray that your good will be done. Let heaven and earth become one. Give us this day the bread we need. Give it to those who have none. Let forgiveness flow like a river between us from each one to each one to each one. Lead us to holy innocence beyond the evil of our days: come swiftly Mother, Father, come. For yours is the power, and the mercy, and the glory. Forever your name is all one. Amen. DISTRIBUTION All are welcome at the table. After you have received the bread, you may dip it into one of the cups: the dark liquid is wine, the light liquid is grape juice. Or, you may eat the bread and then drink from the last cup which is a common cup of wine. Children who do not yet commune may come forward for a blessing. Thank you to everyone who has so generously volunteered his or her help to see that our church members who need transportation can get here it s not only hospitable, but a significant cost-saving measure for the church budget. We still need rides for a few people who live close to the church. If you are able to offer a ride on a regular basis, willing to partner with someone else to share the responsibility, or willing to serve as a back up on occasion, please let Pastor Laurie know. Sentinel Deadline is Tomorrow, April 27. Give Our Little Ones a Boost. If you have an extra booster seat or high chair at home, please let Joel Abrahamson know. Loans or donations: either would be fine. Wilderness Canoe Base Work Weekend: Our annual trek to help open the camp is Friday May 15th Sunday May 17th. All ages are invited; help with a variety of projects to prepare for their canoe trips and base camp programs. Leave Friday morning or afternoon.
