Grade 5 Mass was a success but many hands make the work fun and easy! Thanks to the 5 th grade teachers, Judy Munson, Katherine McHugh, Helen Douglas, Jake Conley, Claire Jalbert, Elizabeth Arnold, Diane Paolino, Donna Villari- Monast, and William Monast for prepping the children. Thanks to Heather Skidds and the youth choir. Thanks also to Herb Mansfield who prepped the readers, the hospitality minsters and collectors who showed the children the ropes of their ministries. And finally to Jen and Carolina Roy, whose help was invaluable! Reconciliation Retreat for Grade 2 students and a parent is NEXT Saturday, December 9 from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall. There will be NO CLASS on Sunday, December 10 for grade 2. * Grade 5 Reconciliation is in March.

3 Attention Scouts: The Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts of America stress duty to God as well as country. All levels of scouting offer the opportunity to earn a religious emblem. The 7 th Grade needs FLEECE: As the weather gets colder we are all seeking warmth! There is still a need for fleece please consider dropping off 1 ¼ yard pieces to be used to make blankets for those less fortunate. For approximately $15.00, the 7 th graders can make a blanket! Many fabric shops including Walmart and Joann are running specials on fleece right now add some time into your Christmas shopping to help others. Currently we have enough fleece to make 12 blankets we would like to make at least 50. There is a drop off box in the parish hall or you can send it into class with your student. ADVENT REFLECTIONS Rev. Joseph D. Creedon, Parish Priest Emeritus of Christ the King Parish, has written a booklet, Advent 2017 Will it be a Carousel that Goes Round and Round, or a Faith Experience that Goes Deeper and Deeper? These daily reflections are available by going to adventreflection.wordpress.com/ In the last few months, we have seen several additions and modifications to the church, and now that all of the projects are complete, I want to take this opportunity to draw attention to them and to thank all those who made them possible. The new tile floor that stretches across the front of the church, the opening of the wall underneath the image of St. Joseph, and the two new candlesticks that adorn the tabernacle are all gifts made in memory of Thelma Kenyon, one of the founding members of Christ the King Church. The candlesticks are identical to those at the altar and to the Easter candle stand (those candlesticks were gifts that were made to the parish last year in memory of Dee Heard). The banner that is draped beneath the tabernacle is a gift to the parish made in memory of Bob & Thelma Haas. The image of the lamb is closely associated to the Eucharist, which is reserved inside the tabernacle. When we sing just before receiving Communion, we echo the words of John the Baptist, who proclaimed: Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. John chose a lamb when he identified Jesus because lambs had been associated with sacrifice throughout the Old Testament. Since the earliest centuries of Christianity, Jesus has been portrayed in art as a lamb carrying a banner, which signifies the victory of resurrection. Similar images of the lamb with the banner are featured on the coat of arms of Puerto Rico and of Perth, Scotland. The new sanctuary lamp next to the tabernacle is a gift made to the parish in memory of Sally Szumita. The sanctuary lamp signifies the abiding presence of Christ in the Eucharist. It is kept burning day and night wherever the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in Catholic churches or chapels. In this sense, the sanctuary lamp is a symbol of every Christian disciple, called to bring the light of Christ into the world and to remind all people of God s promise that he will be with us always, even until the end of time. I should also mention the return of the ambry, which had been mounted to the wall that was removed in order to make the tabernacle visible. The ambry is now located underneath the image of St. Mary. The ambry was dedicated in thanksgiving for the many years of ministry of our formal pastoral associate, Nancy Drennan. The ambry is the cabinet where we store the sacred sacramental oils that are blessed by the bishop during Holy Week and received into parish churches each year on Holy Thursday. The Oil of Catechumens is used in Baptism; the Sacred Chrism is used in Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders; and the Oil of the Infirm is used in the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Outside the church, lights have been installed around the new church sign at Old North Road. The signs (in front and back) were given to the parish in memory of Michael Fay. Thanks to Sean Benzoni for reinstalling the lights and to the members of the garden crew who are working on a new garden around the sign. There are always opportunities for parishioners to memorialize various liturgical items, so please keep that in mind throughout the year. If you look around the church, you will see just how many other families have been inspired to make generous memorial contributions to the parish throughout our history. It s an ancient custom that still finds meaning today as we work to prepare the church for tomorrow. Finally, speaking of parish support, I want to thank our music ministers once again for this year s concert, and for all parishioners support of this annual celebration of praise and worship. Your donations to this year s concert leave us in the position to give just over $5,000 to the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Providence. Also, as a result of our Thanksgiving collection, we are sending $1,552 to the By His Grace food pantry of the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

ALL GIFTS SHOULD BE RETURNED on December 2/3 or 9/10. ******************************************** ADVENT FOOD COLLECTION During Advent the Social Action Committee is once again coordinating a Food Drive for the families who use our Emergency Food Pantry and other local families in need. The drive is Saturday/Sunday December 16 & 17. Collection boxes will be in the parish hall to place nonperishable items. Suggested items are: canned meats, vegetables, cereals, pasta & sauce, peanut butter, jelly, canned fruits, coffee, etc. We invite all parishioners to help sort and/or deliver the food baskets on Monday, December 18 at 9am in the Parish Hall. AN INTRODUCTION TO ISLAM Tuesday, December 12, 7:00 8:30 p.m. The Parish Peace and Justice and Spiritual Life Committees are sponsoring a presentation on Islam, with a focus on dispelling myths and reviewing important similarities between Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. Guest speakers will be Abdelnasser Hussein, Principal of the West Warwick Islamic School and Jim Buxton, a retired South Kingstown High School Social Studies teacher. Jim has also taught Political Science at URI. Jim and Nasser co-teach courses on Islam at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at URI.
