2 EVANGELISM OR HOSPITALITY OR BOTH? By Olu Brown, as excerpted from Circuit Rider the UMC Clergy magazine Some may contend that there is a stark difference between evangelism and hospitality, but I believe that in twenty-first-century culture they are the same strategy reflected differently. Historically, many local churches have designed their outreach, evangelism and hospitality efforts to include the election of a sixto nine-member team, cookies in the lobby for visitors, and follow-up via poorly printed form letters delivered by the US Postal Service. Before today, this form of evangelism and hospitality worked because, for the most part in the US, we were seeking and reaching the loyalty generation. People from this generation stayed with a company, denomination, or community organization even if they disagreed with its creed or practices or if they had unhappy experiences. Truly we owe a great deal to these forerunners who ve been so loyal our wonderful institutions, endowments, and many of our scientific, religious, and technological achievements. Many of these individuals who built and nurtured most of our local churches and larger denominations were a congregation s prime customers for the early form of evangelism and hospitality. Fifty years ago, we could simply hang a cross in a new sanctuary, place an open for business sign on the front door, and rightly expect as a direct result that people would enter the building and experience the power of God. Today it s an entirely different story and landscape, requiring a different design, approach, and execution. In 2015, the early form of evangelism and hospitality is no longer optimal; it doesn t help local churches connect with the communities around them. Today, we are no longer trying to reach only the loyalty generation. We are also seeking the relational generation. The relational generation is a uniquely creative group, craving relationships that are not formed or nurtured primarily through traditional or outdated institutions. As the relational generation came into being, many denominations and local churches failed to maintain a pulse on the current developing beneath the flow of the loyalty generation. This deep undercurrent that our predecessors missed are best explained from the passage in Exodus 1:8 (NLT): Eventually, a new king came to power in Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph or what he had done. We were so certain that the loyalty generation would have children and grandchildren who would be similarly loyal. Yet clearly that has not and is not working for any church today. Our ministry is fresh and different when we realize that evangelism and hospitality today is more than knocking on doors and providing visitors with lobby cookies on Sunday mornings. Contemporary evangelism and hospitality is actually making real and lasting relationships, developing a strategy called zip code presence. This strategy means to map out our churches zip codes in fiveto ten-mile radius circles accompanied by questions like Who are the schools principals? Who is the police chief? Who is the fire chief? Who are the business owners? Where are the apartments, the young people, the seniors, and the nonprofit organizations? We can then be a twenty-first-century relational faith community so that our congregations can truly be witnesses for Jesus Christ. We must commit to and practice extreme hospitality. This type of hospitality is best defined by the following three statements: All people are welcome. All people are worthy. All people have a place. E m m a n u e l F u n - R a i s i n g C r u i s e Fun for you and Funds for the Church!! Tell your friends and family to join you! 3 GENESIS PANTRY The pantry continues to serve a large number of clients in our community. In addition, our volunteers brought in a pallet and a half of food (56 boxes) from the Postal Food Drive. Recently, Nancy was busy gathering food for the pantry when a gentleman approached her and inquired if she was from Emmanuel UMC. Once she told him she was, he proceeded to assist her by unloading boxes from her car. He told her that when he had been homeless some time ago, he was a Genesis Pantry client and had been treated kindly. He is now back on his feet with a home, family and job. Thank you to all who have served to help support the pantry. Plans are underway for a hands-on event that would take us out into the mission field to partner with area nonprofits. T-Shirts will be available to order with our church name on them. and to display our mission to the community and our location. Look for the opportunity to order a T-Shirt and then add your willing hands to the outreach project. AC STEWARDSHIP With rising temperatures comes rising air conditioning costs. Please please please be vigilant about turning the AC thermostat back UP when you adjourn your meeting or music practice. Let s not waste precious financial resources cooling the furniture save the chill for the people!! FLORIDA UNITED METHODIST CHILDREN S HOME MISSION STATEMENT: To empower children and families to experience God s love and care as revealed in the ministry of Jesus Christ. Our Fifth Sunday Offerings continue to be supported by the faithful at EUMC, which is always so appreciated. The 5 th Sunday Offerings are used to help in meeting the day-to-day needs of the children, youth and families in their care which is vital of the success of their chosen ministry. Thank you to all who continue to support this ministry. DONATIONS MADE EASY FOR TRAVELERS - Just as you rely upon receiving income on a regular basis, Emmanuel UMC relies on your regular contributions. Emmanuel appreciates the efforts of members to make consistent donations throughout the year - especially during popular winter and summer travel periods. To assist you, the church provides a convenient electronic giving option for setting up regular contributions. It s easy: Just go to emmanuelumc.net at any time to set up a plan; change a plan; make a one-time donation or view your current online donation history. For more information, please contact the church office, ( ), or Bud Yeager, ( ). A. P.P. Answered Prayer Pebbles. Be sure to drop a pebble into the jar located near the doors to the narthex if God has answered a prayer for you this week. This jar is a visual affirmation of God s ever -present Spirit in our lives and that he listens to our prayers and responds. Let your prayers never cease to be lifted up for the needs of others and for your self, for God knows your heart and will bring you comfort. The container holds 50 pebbles, and we have reached that mark in just 3 weeks!

4 What a successful host week we had this month. Our Volunteer Team is growing and thriving. Thank you for all your support. God has answered prayers for sure! We started out with two families and 5 kids and ended with one family and 2 kids. The families were very impressed with our facility and so grateful for all the toiletries, toothbrushes, deodorant etc. we supplied them. They said we were the only church who provided these things. They also appreciated the access to the fridge outside the kitchen for late night snacks after the kids went to bed along with juice and tea. That is not a consistent provision for all host sites. We have three new Captains to help with the organization of the tasks and volunteer staff which helped me tremendously and made our week so successful. We had youth who helped set up and made Mother s Day cards with the kids, giving Corton a glittering glow and new volunteers for overnight. Our next host week is August 9 through the 16 th. Please mark your calendars and consider volunteering. We need to replenish our toiletry supplies. The last Family Promise Shower we had just before we began the ministry was so successful the items carried us for over a year. If anyone is interested in volunteering to organize this event, please contact Nannette Bell. God is working in all of you Emmanuel and you are spreading his love. Congratulations to 2015 High School graduates! Joseph Curry Ian Dillon Alana Hall Noah Jealouse Tori Long Rachael Martin Cheyanne Rice God Bless and continued success! A Worship Arts Retreat is planned for July 17 and 18 in Vero Beach that is open to any and all who wish to attend. You do not have to be part of the Worship Arts Ministry to participate. The cost for the weekend is $ per person. Activities include music, games, exercises and of course, food! Please see Arlene Alvarado for more information.

6 Maya Angelou quotes about living a life of purpose Courtesy Relevant Magazine May 29, 2015 Jesse Carey and Lindsey Staton A year ago on May 28, the world lost an artist of the highest order. Maya Angelou was an author, poet, dancer, actress, and singer. Over her 50 year career, she wrote numerous plays, movies, and television shows, published seven autobiographies, three books of essays and several accalimed books of poetry. She received dozens of awards including a Pulitzer Prize nomination, a Tony Award nomination, three Grammys for her spoken word albums, the National Medal of Arts, the Lincoln Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was a civil rights activist, served on two presidential committees and also received more than 50 honorary degrees. But despite this long list of accomplishments, she is most remembered for her wisdom, her faith in God and her ability to communicate big truths with simplicity, beauty and grace. On the anniversary of her passing, we look back at some of her most impactful thoughts about living a life purpose. On Bitterness "Bitterness is like cancer. It eats upon the host. But anger is like fire. It burns it all clean." On Career Passion "You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don t make money your goal. Instead pursue the things you love doing and then do them so well that people can t take their eyes off of you." Courage from God "I found that I knew not only that there was God, but that I was a child of God. When I understood that, when I comprehended that, more than that, when I internalized that, ingested that, I became courageous. I dared to do anything that was a good thing. I dared to do things as distant from what seemed to be in my future. If God loves me, if God made everything from leaves to seals and oak trees, then what is it I can't do?" On Generosity "When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed." On Gratitude "Let gratitude be the pillow upon which you kneel to say your nightly prayer. And let faith be the bridge you build to overcome evil and welcome good." On Growth "We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty." On Hate "Hate, it has caused a lot of problems in the world, but has not solved one yet." On Healing "As soon as healing takes place, go out and heal somebody else." On Influence "Each of us, famous or infamous, is a role model for somebody, and if we aren't, we should behave as though we are cheerful, kind, loving, courteous. Because you can be sure someone is watching and taking deliberate and diligent notes." On Love "Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope." On Seeing People as God s Children "While I know myself as a creation of God, I am also obligated to realize and remember that everyone else and everything else are also God's creation." On God's Love "God loves me. It still humbles me that this force that makes leaves and fleas and stars and rivers and you, loves me. Me, Maya Angelou. It's amazing. I can do anything. And do it well. Any good thing, I can do it. That's why I am who I am, yes, because God loves me and I'm amazed at it." On Work "Nothing will work unless you do." On Your Story "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you." Courtesy Relevant Magazine.
