4 The Lenten Journey Sunday, March 3 Extended Care Plan (Luke 13:6-9) Sunday, March 10 In Is In OR Is It? (Luke 15:29-32) Sunday, March 17 Intentional Direction (Philippians 3:13-15) Holy Week Palm Sunday, March 24 YES, REALLY! A Protest March! (Luke 19:38-40) Good Friday, March 29 7:00 PM What s Good About Good Friday? (Hebrews 10:12-22) Easter Sunday, March 31 Kingdom Love Just Like Me Dear Lord, forgive our yielding to temptation; Forgive our pride, our love of worldly things. Have mercy on our love of sensual pleasure, Compassion on the sins that self love brings. It must be hard to understand us sometimes; So very different is your heart and mind. But wait, I just remembered that you do know What it s like to be a part of humankind. You suffered just like we do, and you were tempted. You lived with us so you could comprehend The things that we go through each trying day, So you could give us mercy, and be our friend. Thank you for compassion and forgiveness; Thank you for your love and empathy. Thank you, Lord, for coming down from heaven To experience life s trials, just like me. -By Joanna Fuchs Do you have the Theme? During the 50 th year celebration we are seeking to share the theme of this church that has made the Christ connection throughout these years of service with Christ to our community. The theme is based on God with us in our response to Christ s love grace, and forgiveness completes the first 50 years and launches God s next fifty years of Christ s enduring presence through this church. Our challenge: In 2012 the Cross wall of the Chancel changed the lighting within the Sanctuary. What will bring fresh light and spirit into the sanctuary through the look and feel of God s welcoming space? What will continue to bring energy of spirit and life into the next decade of servanthood? How shall we share that with those who come to worship? Things to keep in mind as you think about a theme: Emmanuel means God with us. This name of God is found in the Isaiah Chapters 7 & 8 prophesy assuring King Ahaz of Judah of God s protection against enemy kings. It is quoted in Matthew as a confirmation of Jesus divinity. Eau Gallie (pronounced "Oh Galley") means rocky water in French. Our Church is on Eau Gallie Blvd. The city was named Eau Gallie because of the coquina rocks along the shore of the Indian River Lagoon. Melbourne: Eau Gallie merged with Melbourne in The city, formerly called "Crane Creek", was named Melbourne in honor of its first postmaster, Cornthwaite John Hector, an Englishman who had spent much of his life in Melbourne, Australia. Breeze. Breeze is the entry street to the church and the location of the first place of gathering. Breeze means to make a noise, buzz, hum, "to blow fresh and strong," [a gentle to moderate wind] or an activity that is easy, not testing or difficult. It also means to move casually, in a carefree manner, but not slowly. Its other meaning is gadfly ) which means a person who disturbs the status quo. We are called to be the change agents in a society that lives outside the love of Christ. All suggestions should reflect the life of this church in appearance of welcoming and openness to God s people in the 21 st Century. The theme will drive the decisions that refresh the experiences on campus. Pray for wisdom and understanding in seeking a fresh wind of the Holy Spirit. Please provide the information through the church office for Anniversary and Trustee planning.

5 Emmanuel Remembered... Continued. Doug and Page Shrewsbury came to Emmanuel, when Patrick Air Force Base and the Cape were going strong and the church was expanding. They were looking for a small church with friendly people and found it here. They made a friend with Pastor H.W. Parker and agreed that Emmanuel was to be their home church. Their two children were baptized and grew up in this church. Doug and Page have both been very active over the years in their leadership roles. Page served as officer at the district level and President of the United Methodist Women. Doug serves as Lay Leader and Lay Speaker, while both have taught Sunday school and sing in the choir. Even at their young age, they are both very active in the affairs and programs at Emmanuel. It s still their home church These servants of the church have seen many changes with Emmanuel Methodist Church including the addition of United being added. Some of the other additions were the building of the sanctuary with sliding glass doors on each side (to be closed in later by solid walls), stained glass windows, wooden pew benches replacing metal chairs, the addition of the Narthex, the building of the education wings and Corton Fellowship hall. Though many things have changed over the years, the friendliness and love of the Lord has not changed at Emmanuel United Methodist Church. Tara Sullivan 50th Anniversary Committee LUNCH BUNCH NEWS Marianne Layton Our group will meet on March 12 th at 11:30, Suntree Café II, located on the west side of Wickham Road across from the BCC campus. Our February group of 25 ladies met on the 12 th at East Garden Chinese Restaurant. We all enjoyed the varied assortment of dishes available for our enjoyment. One of our group had not been at this restaurant before and had a great time sampling the delicacies. An invitation is extended to any and all who would like to spend this time sharing fellowship, fun and, of course, a grand meal. We look forward to seeing you in March. Everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible but not everything is constructive. Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others. 1 Corinthians 10:23-24 Spaghetti Dinner Is Served!! 6 The Lord s Prayer Reworded to capture the fullness of its meanings: Dear Father always near us, May your name be treasured and loved, May your rule be completed in us. May your will be done here on earth in just the way it is done in heaven. Give us today the things we need today, and forgive us our sins and impositions on you, as we are forgiving all who in any way offend us. Please don t put us through trials, but deliver us from everything bad, Because you are the one in charge, And you have all the power, And all the glory too is all yours forever which is just the way we want it. Amen (or, Whoopee)! By Dallas Willard, The Divine Conspiracy [page 269] R U Making UR List! Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:18) During Lent remember to make a list of all the things and people that you are thankful for in your life. Our focus on thanksgiving makes us see the world as Jesus sees it...with loving eyes and joyful hearts. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY ANNUAL STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL On March 16 th and 17 th, the Annual Festival will be taking place. To continue with our endeavor to participate, EUMC ladies will be hawking the Chocolate Dipped Strawberries on Saturday, March 16 th. The booth will be up and ready at 8:00AM until closing at 5:00PM. We have participated for many years and, in fact, we dipped AND sold the berries. But there came a time when we could no longer handle the daunting task of the dipping. If you have not had an opportunity to come to the Festival, you might like to attend. There is so much to see and the local entertainment is outstanding; plus all the food vendors that offer a variety of choices. Then, of course, you have the main attraction - strawberries. They are sold in pints, quarts and flats and also used in some very tasty delicacies, i.e. shortcake, pancake breakfast, smoothies and the eye appealing dipped berries. Marianne Layton What was Emmanuel Methodist church like in the beginning? What drew you to this church? Why did you stay? These are some of the questioned I asked some of our mature members. Gayle Sanders remembered having church services at what is now the parsonage and listening to the plans for the sanctuary to be built. She came to the church with her husband and young daughters having just moved to the area. Eau Gallie Boulevard was not a through street and you had to go looking for the church to know it was even there. The church was composed of many young couples and children. Once she found Emmanuel, she has never left and seen her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren go to church here. Bud and Golda Yeager looked around to several other area churches before finding Emmanuel. They felt the connection to the other families right off. Though they had to move away for a couple of years when they came back, they were happily welcomed back to the fold. All three of their children grew up in Emmanuel, enjoying an active youth program. There was a thriving youth group, the Sounds of Purpose Singers, Sunday school and Bible school every summer. Bud found his calling in serving on the Finance committee and Golda in Congregational Care. The friendliness and total acceptance is what brought them here and what has kept them here. Marilyn Harris was at St. Paul s Methodist church when she was call to sub temporarily as choir director until a replacement could be found. After a while when it looked like the temporary position was going to last a while, Frank and Marilyn transferred membership to Emmanuel. She held the position of choir director for 27 ½ years. She offered plenty of encouragement and assistance to new choir members. Frank Harris organized family nights playing basketball, volleyball or other games for both adults and children at Johnson Jr. High. Both Marilyn and Frank sang in the choir and showed their children and grandchildren the joys of praising the Lord with music. Continued.

Easter Has Come! Are you Ready? Can you imagine a perfect world? Can you see the streets of glory? Will you get there today? Or will you just keep waiting for tomorrow. I think we have lots of evidence that tomorrow may not be here for you or me at any time. We only have the present - a gift of this day. What will it be this Easter? Will you let go of the stuff that limits God s active presence in you or will you keep on practicing religion? Religion is why Christ came in the flesh. He came because humans had developed a method of God, instead of the living in the presence of God. Today, Christ wants us to learn what he taught then that the kingdom of God is in the here and now, not just in the hereafter. As a pastor, I struggle with living in both worlds too. I hear the lame excuses for saying not and the less frequent joyful reasons for yes. Why is it we are better equipped to say, No, not me, than Yes I can, or I will be in prayer, work with youth, invite people to church, speak to my neighbor? I believe we are accountable to Father God at some point beyond this moment. I believe that in our relationship with Christ and the Holy Spirit, we have access to the fullness of God. I believe our God has enacted our responsible choice option [free will] for a reason. He wants us to freely come to him. Freely walk with him, just as Adam and Eve did before knowing better. Then we could return to the open relationship with God during the Garden years while here in this imperfect world. I pray this Easter season that each of us will make the right choices to be in relationship with God through his Son, Jesus Christ. I implore you to be in relationship with Christ. Seek to be who he is calling you to be in Christ and the Church. We do not want to find ourselves in the same place as those who shouted Hosanna! on Palm Sunday, then Crucify Him! on Friday. Where will you stand Easter morning when He is Risen! becomes the truth that sets you free? May Christ s presence be with you through it all. Pastor Warren
