3 Mom s Prayer Group, June 8th at 9:15am This will be the last meeting for the group as the school year is ending! UMW Circle Lunch, June 13, 12pm Ladies, Lunch, Lord!! What an amazing time you will have! Annual Conference, June 13-16th This year s session is entitled Do This and You Will Live! Do What? and will take place in Boise. Youth-led Worship Service / Father s Day, June 17th, 11am Don t forget to submit your pictures of you and your dad by June 12. You will have a chance to share a story or lesson 2min or less! Serving Saturday, June 16th at 11am It s that time of the month, once again! Come and let s spiffy up our sanctuary, inside and out!! See you there! SITE Committee Meeting, June 6:30pm This is the final meeting of the year, members! See you there! God s Grace Church BBQ Fundraiser June 23, 12 Noon We are inviting community and our fellow brothers and sisters to help support our mission trip. It will be in the parking lot, come and join the fun and fellowship! Guest Speaker Evens Paul and Potluck, June 24th at 11am Let us welcome the Paul family, Evens Paul will be our guest preacher. Potluck to follow service. UMW Mission Assembly, June 30th at 10am Our UMW group will be accepting donations of school supplies up until thel ast day of this month. They will assemble the kits on the 30th. Donation box is in the Fellowship Hall. Haiti Mission Donations, Month of June The Haiti Mission Team are accepting donations for their rummage sale that will take place in July. All items will be stored until the event. 5 Susanne Lohkamp I don t mind telling you that I am sixty-four years old, because most days I feel much younger. Yet, I was born on June and so it must be true. Our tiny house in Yakima, Washington was stuffed with books and music and lots of family love. My Great Grandparents lived on one side of us, my Uncle, Aunt and cousin lived on the other side. In 1961 my family moved to Portland so my Dad could find work. Our family now included my brother Stephen, and two younger sisters, Ruthie and Sarah. I attended both public and Christian schools which encouraged my passion for learning about life. In 1973, I got my dream job working at the Central Library downtown. I have been working at the library ever since, including the fourteen years I spent as a school librarian at St. Ignatius school. In 1980, I married Tom Lohkamp. We have two sons- Matt and James. Our family has grown to six now with James and his wife Katie, and Matt and his partner, Austen. Our house is still stuffed with books and music and lots and lots of love. I am so grateful for all God s Blessing and eagerly look forward to the years ahead. 5

6 Tully...A Movie Review by Char Blakely This drama/comedy movie stars Charlize Theron as a mother of three, one who is a newborn. At this point of her life, she is totally overwhelmed running the home, making lunch, going to school appointments, going on zero sleep, worrying about her out-of-shape-body, and everything else. She needs help. The whole atmosphere of her family rests on her. The way this mom deals with her crazy life is indeed unique. It emerges as a surprise and into a nice ending to her story. 7 A Heart-felt Movement: Tips for adding steps into your day Go window shopping Mow the lawn with a walking mower Park in the back row of the parking lot Walk to yard sales to shop for bargains Tour a museum, zoo, or nature preserve Choose the stairs instead of the elevator Walk with a friend during your lunch break Volunteer to walk dogs for an animal shelter Meet a friend for lunch at a restaurant you can walk to Circle around the block once before bringing in the mail Put the remote in a drawer. Get up to change the channel Set an alarm to go off every hour or two to get you up, even if just to down the hall and back. Pace around the house while talking on the phone Get off the bus or subway a stop before you need to and walk the rest of the way Walk on short errands, such as a nearby store, post office, or dry cleaner. 8 UPDATES A good place to check out for updates on all sorts of things!! We are pleased to announce that a portion of the community garden field has been marked for soil turnover and soon after we will begin mixing in our composts. This will create a better quality soil for our JUNE plantings!! YAY!! We are definitely moving ahead with our church-supported community garden. Snow Cap Donation of the Month: Oatmeal and Cereals Volunteer Needed: We are looking for someone to fill Mia s spot in our Newsletter Team. She will be completing her internship in June. 9 From Your Lay Leader...Joanne Dobrinski Greetings all. Following is some information I would like to share with you this month. *In our last Messenger I wrote about our Bishops meeting held in May. Since then they have decided to present the One Church Model to the General Conference to be held in February I direct you to the following site in order to hear Rev. Donna Pritchard s explanation of this decision. Once on the site just scroll down to the May 18 posting. *Our United Methodist Women will once again be assembling school kits for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). We are asking you to donate items to help make up these kits. There is a bin located in the fellowship room marked School Kits where you can leave items before June 30. We could not do this without your help and truly appreciate your part in this project. Here is a list of needed items (all items need to be new): Blunt scissors with round tips and not plastic Box of 24 count crayons One subject notebooks One pack loose-leaf paper > pg packets, wide or college rule Hand held pencil sharpener > 1 inch or longer Sturdy Ruler > 12 inch/30 centimeters long Six unsharpened pencils Eraser > two inches or longer *I encourage your support of the team from Tabor Heights going on the Haiti Mission Trip. A brochure about the trip is available at the church. They are asking for your prayers, items for a rummage sale to be held July 13-14, and any financial support you can give. They are partnering with Sustainable Action International (SAI). Have an enjoyable summer. 9

10 From the Pastor May my prayer be counted as incense before You; The lifting up of my hands as the evening offering. <Psalm 141:2> Over the weekend of Memorial Day, it was the first time for my family to set up the barbeque grill out this year. It s just nice to be outside feeling the warmth of the sun and a gentle breeze. Surely, Spring slowly hands its freshness and moisture over to the season of a green, growing, and glowing (bright) summer. Daylight is now much longer than any time of the year and it is such a beautiful time of the year. However, this exciting season not only creates delightfulness but also brings with it some challenges. In the garden, there are now all kinds of greens greeting us each morning and being proud of their overnight growth, but in the meantime, I feel obligated to pick the weeds around the trees, the lawn and, everywhere. In playing, it is wonderful to kick a soccer ball with the kids until it gets dark (after 9pm), but it is also painful to convince them that it s time to go to bed for the next school day. In commuting, it is much easier to drive or find transportation to get around in daylight, but traffic in Portland still doesn t seem to loosen down, even after rush hours. Summer is not a season to excuse ourselves from those ongoing obligations and challenges. Rather, it is a season for us to build healthy boundaries in diligence: tie up plants to supporting sticks so they grow taller and stronger and water them every evening, set an alarm to get into bed on time and to wake up on time, plan wisely to avoid unnecessary trips to the markets or elsewhere, and walking or bicycling short distances instead of driving. After all, it matters how we practice and discipline ourselves during this busy, exciting, and challenging season before us. 10

11 From the Pastor (continued)... How about our spiritual practices and disciplines during the summer season? How many of us find it may be a good time to excuse ourselves for weekend camping or traveling instead of keeping our worship times and Sunday school each and every Sunday? How many of us find that it may be a time to add more and more activities and busy-ness in our routine instead of staying focus on the desire and passion of God who wants to sit down and talk with us? Tabor Heights is moving toward her summer season to be greener, growing, and glowing. Winter is over and spring cultivation works are done. Some seeds have been planted and I am very delighted and grateful. The following song lyrics remind me of what it means to become spiritually mature in my daily and weekly disciplines and practices in the Lord. Tabor Heights will find some hours of prayers communally. We will set an alarm for our daily and weekly routines for each member in diligence. We will travel afar together with the Gospel of Jesus Christ beyond our local traffic and meet our neighbors as we walk or bike closely in sharing our stories in God. Will you join me in grilling, weeding, playing, bicycling, and also keeping our time with Christ Jesus? Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! The joys I feel, the bliss I share, of those whose anxious spirits burn with strong desires for thy return! With such I hasten to the place where God my Savior shows His face, and gladly take my station there, and wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer! Many blessings, Pastor John 11
