2 Page 2 Pastor s Page From the Pastor s Desk June 2018 I have been wondering how our tongues reveal a lot about the kind of person we are. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. With out our tongue we would have a difficult time communicating with each other. It is a very valuable part of our body. It can bring tremendous healing to people. Yet, it has the powerful ability to destroy people for a lifetime. The Bible says it is an uncontrollable evil and full of deadly poison. We can tame some very wild and large animals like lions and elephants, but no human being has ever been able to tame the tongue. James 3: 8 says; But the tongue can no man tame, it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. If no man can tame the tongue, what are we to do with it? The Bible goes on to say that we use our tongue to bless God, then turn right around and use that same tongue to curse people who are made in the image of God. James says, this is not the way it should be. This kind of behavior must stop. Speaking without thinking is like shooting a gun without aiming. Words are powerful! Choose them wisely. If we can t tame the tongue, what is the answer to using this powerful weapon for good? In Galatians 5:16 it tells us, So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Our tongue is like the steering wheel on our cars. We can make the three thousand pound car go where ever we want it to go, if we have ahold of the steering wheel. The answer for controlling our tongue is to turn the control over to the Holy Spirit. Then we will not curse people with our tongues. James said if our tongue is controlled, we could control every other part of our body. Galatians teaches us to walk by the Holy Spirit which enables us to use our tongue as a tool to heal people. In 1825 the rope broke while Kondraty Ryleyev was being hanged for taking part in an uprising against a Russian emperor. A pardon was usually given to a victim when a rope broke during a hanging. When a messenger rushed to tell the Emperor what took place, the Emperor asked what did Kondraty say? The messenger replied, Sir, he said that in Russia they do not even know how to make a rope properly. The Emperor responded; well let the contrary be proved. Kondraty s tongue cost him his life. Our tongues have also gotten us into a heap of trouble. The Bible teaches us that no man can tame the tongue, but God s Holy Spirit can. The best decision we can ever make as Christians is for us to voluntarily get out of the driver s seat and ask the Holy Spirit to take control of our steering wheel. There is the source of power to use our tongue to bless God and others. It can be one of our most powerful tools for good when steered by the hand of God. That, is the key to taming the tongue. What a joy it is to see the grass growing, new shrubs being planted and the golfers out hitting balls.

It was great to see the pavilion being used again for Earthly Treasures. Speaking of the walking path, it is being used and everybody is welcome to come and walk.

Faithful Friends May s Faithful Friends were Henry and Fern Yoder. I think I gave it away with the monkey around statement.

3 Tommy & A Faithful Friend Page 3 Tommy The Church Mouse June 2018 The new month and the start of Summer Vacation at least for all of those who have been in school. As a mouse you wouldn t think that I could get excited about that, but I do. I spend a lot more time out side and only come in to give a report to Pastor Ron on how the church is looking. What a joy it is to see the grass growing, new shrubs being planted and the golfers out hitting balls. Sometimes the golfers hit their balls pretty close to the walking path, but still far enough away not to bother the windows that are so pretty. It was great to see the pavilion being used again for Earthly Treasures. Speaking of the walking path, it is being used and everybody is welcome to come and walk. We have such a pretty church and a great location for all the people of the community to enjoy, and most important what a wonderful place to worship God and His Son Jesus Christ. Until later. Fern always has a booth at the bazaars selling her sock monkeys, and I stand corrected it was the Burrito Restaurant south of Shipshewana that they met at a singles meeting. You just never know what is going on around here do you? You can t help but smile when you talk with them and hear what they are up too. Hugs to both of you. June s Faithful Friends have been married 25 years. They have been members off and on here at the First United Methodist Church for all their married life. People think that they were both raised on family farms, but he was the only one. They met in college and it was one of our two rivalries. IU or Purdue..hmmmmm. They were both in the marching band. One played the clarinet and one played the baritone. I wonder if we asked them now if they could help start a band here? They left the church when their children needed a good youth group and at the time we didn t have one. But now have returned, what a blessing for us. They wish Jeff and Lisa were leaders when their children were youth. Their children are now young adults in college and one married. They feel First United Methodist Church is family and they enjoy the new building and all that it offers. They too are looking forward to seeing new people join our congregation. I am now humming the college fight song of the school they attended. Hear it? Oh boy, once an alum always an alumni. Are they sitting next to you during church or singing next to you? Praise Him with trumpet sound; Praise Him with harp and lyre; Praise Him with timberland dancing: Praise Him with stringed instruments and pipe. Praise the LORD! Praise God in His sanctuary; Praise Him in His mighty expanse. - Psalm 150: 1-6

This will fund the mission trip to John's Island, SC in October as well as some other things. The mission committee is extremely grateful for all the donations and helpers.

We tried some new things this year and it went well. we are thinking about some other ideas for next year. If you have any suggestions we would be glad to hear them. This will fund the mission trip to John's Island, SC in October as well as some other things. The mission committee is extremely grateful for all the donations and helpers. The set up and pack up teams were awesome and made quick work of the daunting tasks. Thank you to the Wednesday evening meal committee (who used some of the funds from the Wednesday evening meals), S.O.S and all the individuals who donated so generously to purchase the van. Also a big thank you to Lowell Miller for designing the graphic on the new van. Once again, our church family pulled together and came through for the needs of the church so we can further the kingdom of God. Mtg. - June 25th Recipe Corner - French Toast Casserole 1 loaf of French Bread (10 cups); 8 Eggs; 3 cups of Milk; 4tsp of Sugar; 1tsp of Vanilla; 3/4tsp of Salt Topping - 2tbsp of Butter; 4tbsp of Brown Sugar; 2tsp of Cinnamon Set oven temp at 350. Place broken bread pieces in a 9x13 baking dish. In a bowl, beat eggs and add milk, sugar, and vanilla. Pour over bread and cover over night. Remove from fridge 30 min. before putting it in the oven. Dot with butter and sprinkle sugar and cinnamon on top. Cover with foil and bake for 45-50min. The last 5 min take off the foil. Serve with syrup. Saturday June 23rd is the Youth Group Car Wash Fundraiser with all proceeds going to the church van. Starts at 10:00 ending at 2:00. Following we are opening to the public for any youth and their families to have some fun at the pavilion. Activities will be Water Kickball, Corn Hole, Volleyball and Bocce Ball. We will also be having an Ice Cream Social. Ending at 5:00. Saturday July 14th the youth group has been invited once again to Jim & Shari Woodruffs home!
