5 Grief Rite Colossians Open to anyone in the community, Grief Rite is a six week Bible study for persons who are grieving OR those desiring to support those who are grieving (relatives, friends, and neighbors). It is hard to lose someone who holds an important place in our lives. However, we all will experience such loss in our lifetime some of us several such losses. Each loss is different because our relationship with each person is different. The scriptures offer us help with grieving through examples taken from the lives of Bible characters. Grief Rite is not a counseling experience and there is no homework. Simply a place to learn how God offers us help through his word. This letter to the Colossian Christians is one of the letters Paul wrote from prison. Paul wanted to guide these new Christians so they would not be led astray by false teachings from the outside world. Some of the issues these Colossians faced are similar to what we experience as Christians today. As a basis for our class, I will be using material from William Barclay's book "The Letters to the Philippians, Colossians, and Thessalonians." This book is not required and there will be handouts given for each class. This will be a four-session study where we look at a chapter each week. 6 John: The Gospel of Light and Life Visio Divina 101 The Gospel of John is the most deeply spiritual of the four gospels. This writing is filled with rich images and profound truths, but John notes that his aim in writing the gospel is that readers will not only believe in Jesus Christ, but that they may have life in his name. You ll follow the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus through the Gospel of John and understand the context of some of the best-known verses in the New Testament. Books will be available for $13 at the Welcome Desk. Visio Divina, or divine seeing, is a prayer of looking with our eyes and seeing with our heart the divine in all that is. This way to pray is experienced in four sequential steps: behold, unfold, receive, and rejoice. Through the practice of this prayer style we grow closer to God. In this workshop we will learn what Visio Divina is, its history, and how it is practiced. We will close with a guided meditation of this beautiful way to prayer. Class: Wednesdays, April 4 through 25 Time: 4:00-5:00 PM Location: Library Facilitator: Beth Biron Registration: Required. Register by March 28 Class Limit: 15 Class: Wednesday, May 9 Time: 6:00-7:30 PM Location: Chapel Facilitator: Karen Appleby Registration: Not Required
7 The Shortest Book in the Bible: Philemon The Life and Theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer This single session will explore Paul s letter to Philemon. Paul composed this letter while in prison to a Christian living in Colossae. Come explore this short, but meaningful letter. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German Protestant theologian, an anti-nazi dissident and a man of exceptional personal courage. Rejecting the idea of comfortable Christianity, he believed Christians should not retreat from the world, but should act in it. Mere weeks prior to Germany s surrender, Bonhoeffer was executed for his ties to a plot to assassinate Adolph Hitler. Join us as we learn more about this man and his extraordinary faith journey. Class: Wednesday, May 9 Time: 6:30-7:30 PM Location: Alma Lee Cheves (Room 202) Facilitator: Rev. Dr. Mark Ralls Registration: Not Required Class: Wednesday, April 4 through April 25 Time: 6:30-7:30 PM Location: Alma Lee Cheves (Room 202) Facilitator: Rev. Dr. Mark Ralls Registration: Not Required, Drop In Anytime
8 Connecting and Serving Spiritual Living This class provides an overview of our best strategies for cultivating deep and authentic connections among our church family. We will walk through our social media presence, including the App Churchlife which places an interactive, constantly updated church directory at our fingertips; myfumc, which allows access to a plethora of church information; and The Link, FUMC s guide to service opportunities. Perhaps most importantly, we will discuss why service and befriending all brothers and sisters are central to the DNA of FUMC. Faith, by itself, if not accompanied by service, is dead. James 2:17 This class provides connections for bridging our faith to continuing growth. As we travel with others in our church family on the spiritual journey, there are strategies and resources to help us on our way. We will share ways to access these opportunities and information, including discovering your spiritual type, disciplines and experiences to learn, what classes, workshops, and retreats are offered throughout the year, how to participate in worship, outreach and seasonal offerings to grow spiritually and draw closer to God. We will also provide a tool for discovering your spiritual gifts. This resource uses our individual experiences, abilities, personality and heart. Class: Sunday, April 22 Time: 12:15-1:30 PM Location: Gettman Room Facilitators: Dee West, Karen Appleby, Jennifer Gompf Registration: Not Required Class: Sunday, May 6 Time: 12:15-1:30 PM Location: Gettman Room Facilitators: Dee West, Karen Appleby, and Jennifer Gompf Registration: Not Required
