3 From the Vicar Bapsm July 31st Weddings None Funerals July 25th Registers Arthur Barnacle Edna Vince Since the last /me I wrote, there has been a referendum. Some people were pleased with the outcome, others weren t. I was pleased to see that there had been a good turn-out but what to me marred the whole episode were the untruths that were told and my fears that people may have voted differently had they known the truth. We will never know exactly what the country thinks because of this, but we have to move forward in a posi/ve manner. There have been a few things that have saddened me, there has been an increase in racial a(acks, {a 500% increase in those reported to the police} plus I saw a swas/ka on a campaign Leave board. Neither side working to promote peace, instead there is ill feeling and hatred towards our neighbours, this is not the way forward. AUGUST 7th Song of Solomon Ch.2 Vv.10-13, 8:6-7 TRINITY 11 1 Corinthians Ch.13 Theme: MARRIAGE John Ch.2 Vv (Vicar asks that for above 3 readings please use your own Bible) 6.30pm Isaiah Ch.11 Vv.10-12:6 2 Corinthians Ch.1 Vv th Isaiah Ch.5 Vv. 1-7 TRINITY 12 Hebrews Ch.11 Vv :2 Theme: MOTHERS UNION Luke Ch.14 Vv.1,7-14 (own bible) Evening Service at Methodist Church 21st Jeremiah Ch.1 Vv 4-10 TRINITY 13 Hebrews Ch.12 Vv Theme: HEALING Luke Ch.13 Vv pm Isaiah Ch.30 Vv Corinthians Ch.9 28th (this service to be confirmed) Hebrews Ch.13 Vv. 1-8,15,16 TRINITY 14 Luke Ch.9 Vv (own bible) Theme: HOME & AWAY No Evening Service The Bible does give us ideas on how we should move forward. The Good Samaritan is probably the best example - a complete stranger finds a man who has been a(acked and cares for him like he would his own brother - but there are other examples too. There are examples of Jesus touching and healing people who are seen as unclean and trea/ng them as normal human beings. Another example is the story of the haemorrhaging woman in Mark A haemorrhaging woman is seen as very lowly in society, unclean and a person to be shunned, so to be in this situa/on for 12 years makes her an outcast. Jesus knew that someone had touched his clothes and sapped his energy. He turns to face her and asks who has touched his coat, naturally she was fearful of what Jesus comments would be. Jesus not only helped her out of her situa/on but called her daughter, a posi- /ve rela/onship giving her status in society. Jesus was there for a person in society who was seen as an outcast. We can follow his example and be there for each other to help one another no ma(er what our backgrounds are. Some of the racial a(acks that have been reported have shown that people have played the Good Samaritan, helping the vic- /ms, standing up for them and giving them support. Learning to deal with life as a Chris/an is something that we have been thinking about in our confirma/on classes over the past few weeks. We have had some lively discussions which have been very enjoyable. At the /me of wri/ng Jo Shipley, Amanda and Ant Hopewell will have been confirmed on 24 th July at by Bishop John. Amanda and Ant moved to Easingwold towards the end of 2015 and they were recently married. Jo has children who a(end our Church Mice. I hope that you were able to join them at the service and please keep them in your prayers as they con/nue their Chris/an journey. Living life as a Chris/an is not always easy, no one ever said that it would be. Our challenge is to make decisions in a Christ like way, and olen these decisions help others far more than they help ourselves. 9 Every blessing for the month of August, Margaret 2
4 Church Mice will resume in September Families are very welcome at any of our church services Easingwold Parish Church St John & All Saints, Church Hill ORDINATION 3rd July 2016 Charlo(e Cranfield was ordained Deacon by Archbishop Sentamu. She is seen here (3rd from lel) and aler the service with the Archdeacon of York, the Venerable Sarah Bullock, and our Vicar, Reverend Margaret Young. Charlo(e will work as Assistant Curate in our parish and has our thoughts and prayers as she starts her new ministry. A row of li(le kni(ed figures decorate one side of the railings of Saltburn Pier. These figures will have some relevance to Yorkshire (Black Sheep brewery, Yorkshire cricketers etc.) and are made by mysterious kni(ers dubbed the Yarn Bombers. Archbishop Sentamu appeared on the railings on December 9th aler his Pilgrimage of Prayer took him to Saltburn. His visit to Sneaton Priory was also marked by the appearance of a set of li(le nuns and monk. 3 ST MARY S CHURCH, RASKELF WEDNESDAY AUGUST 3rd 12 noon LITE BITE LUNCH, Old Black Bull, Raskelf SUNDAYS AUGUST 7th & 21st COMMUNION 9.10am SUNDAY AUGUST 14th FAMILY SERVICE CELTIC SERVICE 6.30pm FRIDAY OCTOBER 7th HARVEST FESTIVAL 7.00pm followed by Supper Old Black Bull PRAYER CORNER Prayer is at the heart of what the church is about and the prayer corner in St John s con/nues to be used regularly. 5 MOTHERS UNION AFTERNOON TEA Saturday August 13th in the Parish Rooms To raise funds for the caravan in Filey & MU Summer Appeal ALL ARE WELCOME HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MOTHERS UNION! 2016 will see the world s largest lay-chris/an membership charity, Mothers Union, mark 140 years of faithful outreach to families of all faiths and none. Since 1876, when Mary Sumner first brought together parents in her own Hampshire parish to build their confidence in bringing up their children, it has grown to an organisa/on of over four million women and men in over 80 countries of the world. Why celebrate 140th, rather than wait for 150th? In the first book of Samuel he marks an unlooked for victory against the mighty Philis/nes by erec/ng a stone, naming it Ebenezer meaning stone of help as a permanent reminder of the leading and guidance of God Thus far has the Lord helped us. Over the past 140 years, Mothers Union has faced, and will con/nue to face, many challenges. Family life is under increasing pressure and the call on charitable resources is higher today than ever before. But we can look at how we are mee/ng these challenges and say, like Samuel, Thus far has the Lord helped us. Special anniversary services and celebra/on events are planned during the year, including a Celebra/on Service in Winchester Cathedral on the 22nd September; returning full -circle to where Mothers Union was founded. New service resources for Mothering Sunday, Lady Day (4th April) and Mary Sumner Day (9th August), are available on Mothers Union s website to enable churches to join us and hold their own celebratory events. Alongside worship and thanksgiving the charity aims to help over 500,000 people through its prac/cal ac/on work during the year. To meet this challenge it has set a fundraising target of 1,400,000 to support its work and outreach in the UK and overseas. To find out how you can help Mothers Union celebrate 140 years of faith in ac/on contact our office on or communica/ons@mothersunion.org 7 Welcome Packs...Michael Wansborough ( ) has updated these, which include leaflets introducing the Parish of Easingwold with Raskelf, Methodist and Community Churches as well as a street plan of Easingwold and detailed informa/on about the area. So if you know anyone who has recently moved here and would like one, please contact Michael or they are available at the back of the church. Fund Raising for churches...the recent fete at Raskelf raised 986 and another 62 will be added when GiL Aid is paid making a total was given to Easingwold Church from the York Concert Band. Church near you...if you are going on holiday and want to find a church close to where you are staying, go to put in a place name and a small map & details should appear. Or alterna/vely, if you have someone coming to stay who would like more informa/on about our churches, please contact Michael Wansborough (822166) for a welcome pack. Collectors please...used postage stamps, except Christmas ones, which evidently don t have any value, i.e. just normal everyday stamps. Bring them to church and Sue Thorn will pass them on. And...any balls of wool. These would be appreciated for knisng up into hats, gloves and scarves for inclusion in the Christmas shoe boxes. Again, please bring them to church and Sue will pass them on. Ryedale Fesval.Easingwold Church was packed on Friday July 22nd for a magnificent concert given by the renowned tenor Joshua Ellico who sang three song cycles including Beethoven s An die ferne Geliebte. He was accompanied by a quartet consis/ng of three violins, one cello and a pianist on a Steinway grand piano. Ebor Lectures next series starts in September. They have not been finalised and there will be more details next month. The lectures which have become very popular are a response to the growing need for theology to interact with public issues in contemporary society. Public theology is about engaging in dialogue with a range of communi/es on issues wider than narrowly defined religious ma(ers. Chrisan Meditaon Sessions...3-4pm in the Commi(ee Room at the Galtres Centre are in progress and con/nue on August 5th, 12th & 19th. The sessions are run by Marko Jakic. A Generous Church...mee/ng for PCC & all parishioners on September 3rd at 10.00am. Hambleton Foodshare...the number to ring is The telephone is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week calls will not be answered but you can leave a message and someone will always call you back to discuss your needs. 4
