On the first two days of November, we celebrate All Saints and All Souls Day, remembering not only loved ones, but also the many unknown, faithful souls whose lives have impacted on us in ways that we hardly recognise. On the 5 th day of November, we say: Remember remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot and we recall those who plot against governments, for good and ill - depending on your point of view. It gives us a learning opportunity to be merciful and forgiving, even towards those who plot against us. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we remember the good and the brave, who sacrificed so much for our freedom. We might remember John McCrae, an army doctor who served in the trenches of the first world war. Seeing the beautiful poppies that grew among the dead soldiers and the ruins of war, John McCrae wrote his famous poem: In Flanders Fields, the poppies grow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our places; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amongst the guns below. We are the Dead. Short time ago We lived, felt dawn, saw the sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders Fields. At the last supper Jesus said to his disciples: Do this in remembrance of me. These are words repeated daily down the centuries in churches across the world. As we share this simple meal, in communion with all the saints, we are given hope in a life beyond war and the hard times. By remembering in this way, we deepen our faith and strengthen the certainty that our Redeemer lives. Remembering this and the blessings of the past year we might also remember to say: Thanks be to God. Barbara Wilkinson 9 2
