1 NEWSLETTER Week Commencing Oct 29, 2017 Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost
2 From the Rector Amidst So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves (From 1 Thessalonians 2: 1-8) St. Paul wrote many beautiful things when he penned his words to the first churches of the Christian Church. The quotation above is a small portion of what he wrote but it is beautifully stirring in its compassion and caring. It suggests a deep relationship with the community there, which is centred on the gospel of God but also a deep concern for the people as they are made in the image of God. The roles and positions in the community did not seem as important as the relationship and a revealed compassion. This seems a very good description of what a parish is all about. We are not simply a group of strangers with little connection to each other but rather a community, a place of compassion, a place of support, a place of encounter with the love of God. St. John s Shaughnessy is being guided by these words from St. Paul. We are a community that aims to preach the gospel with words, actions, prayers, music and compassion. We are anchored in the good news of God as revealed in Jesus Christ but that good news has transformed us to recognize that we are called into action in how we support and offer care to one another. Our parish Pastoral Care Team focuses upon this but this sense of loving our neighbour as our self is not limited to certain roles but is our goal for the entire parish. Our Neighbourhood Ministry leaders and participants also aim to spread the Gospel of God beyond our four walls and into the streets and neighbourhoods around us. And they are incredibly good at it! But again, loving our neighbour is not limited to certain roles or people but is our goal for the entire parish. And we continue to strive to do this in response to our love of God. As our parish as a whole becomes more and more aware as to how we develop and strengthen the sense of community and neighbourly love, please continue to participate and support this work. We are a parish community filled with incredible people with a whole variety of talents and skills that are being offered to build up this place much as Paul described in his letter to the Thessalonians. In this time of the Stewardship Campaign, may you be stirred in faith as well, to offer of the gifts that God has given
3 you: money, time and skills to continue to help St. John s respond to God s love in our hearts, minds, souls and strengths. Author of life Divine, you call us to love. To love you with the whole of ourselves and our neighbours with the same depth of commitment. Shine your light in our souls so that we may reveal that light in our plans and actions this date. Stir us to a faith that not only affirms your presence in our lives but challenges how we pray, choose and comfort. For we are followers of Jesus the Christ not in words only but actions and possibilities. In His name we pray. Amen. November 19 Special Vestry Meeting We are holding a Special Vestry Meeting (for all parishioners) to discuss potential new bylaws for our parish. If we support them, they will also need the approval of Diocesan Council and the Bishop. Copies of the suggested new bylaws are available in the Narthex. At this same meeting of the Vestry, we will also discuss potential work to be done on the organ and potential changes to the church interior (this part of the meeting will be for discussion only, not for approval at this stage). Christian Formation for Tuesdays in November Please join us on Tuesdays in November at 7:15pm to learn more about Anglican Worship. Anglican Worship: Why we Do What we Do. The first session will be on November 7 in the Trendell Lounge. Please join us. Fall Stewardship Campaign: St John s Shaughnessy we are worth it! So many exciting things continue to take place at St. John s and we really hope that every parishioner will support them financially and as volunteers. Our parish relies on every one of us participating fully in the life of our community. We have had two Stewardship Wine and Cheese Gatherings and they have been wonderful for fellowship, conversation, and learning about our parish. If you have not had an invitation, please call the Church Office.
4 Everyone also should have received a Stewardship Package by now, if not please let the Church Office know. Extras are available in the Narthex beside the name tags. We are anticipating an increase in the number of pledges made to the ministry of St. John s and also the amount pledged. We do need everyone participating! Please bring in your pledge card by November 12 to help us in our planning for Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous; teach me to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost.
