19 th February 2017 Seventh Sunday After Epiphany

Welcome! We bid you a very warm welcome to our worship. As we gather in this sacred space, silent prayer and reflection helps us to prepare for the service. We acknowledge our presence is on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Listening devices are available for the hearing impaired during the service; please contact one of our greeters. Prelude Words of welcome Partita 'O Gott, du frommer Gott' (Oh God, you righteous God) JS Bach Please rise as you are able to sing our opening Hymn No. 506 in Common Praise 1 Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, whose trust, ever childlike, no cares can destroy, be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day. 2 Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe, be there at our labors, and give us, we pray, your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day. 3 Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace, be there at our homing, and give us, we pray, your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day. 4 Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm, be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day. 2

+The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. We stand to sing together the Gloria in Excelsis 3

Let us pray. O God most holy, in Jesus Christ you have laid a foundation upon which to build our lives. Help us to follow your perfect law of love, so that we may fulfill and observe it to the end. Amen. Children s focus Please sit for a reading from the Book of Leviticus (Chapter , 9-18) The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the Lord your God. You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; and you shall not lie to one another. And you shall not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God: I am the Lord. You shall not defraud your neighbour; you shall not steal; and you shall not keep for yourself the wages of a labourer until morning. You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling-block before the blind; you shall fear your God: I am the Lord. 4

Reader You shall not render an unjust judgement; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbour. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbour: I am the Lord. You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbour, or you will incur guilt yourself. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself: I am the Lord. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. Please rise as you are able to chant Psalm Teach me, O Lord, the way ¹of your¹ statutes, * and I shall ¹keep it ¹to the¹ end. 34 Give me understanding, and I shall ¹keep your¹ law; * I shall keep ¹it with ¹all my¹ heart. 35 Make me go in the path of ¹your com-¹mandments, * for ¹that is ¹my de-¹sire. 36 Incline my heart to ¹your de-¹crees * and ¹not to ¹unjust¹ gain. 37 Turn my eyes from watching ¹what is¹ worthless; * give ¹me life ¹in your¹ ways. 38 Fulfil your promise ¹to your¹ servant, * which you make to ¹those¹ who fear¹ you. 39 Turn away the reproach ¹which I¹ dread, * because your ¹judge-¹ments are¹ good. 40 Behold, I long for ¹your com-¹mandments; * in your righteousness ¹pre-¹serve my¹ life. 5

Glory be to the Father, and ¹to the ¹Son,* and ¹to the ¹Holy ¹Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ¹ever ¹shall be,* world without ¹end. ¹A-¹men. Please sit for a reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians (Chapter ,16-23) According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ. Do you not know that you are God s temple and that God s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God s temple, God will destroy that person. For God s temple is holy, and you are that temple. Do not deceive yourselves. If you think that you are wise in this age, you should become fools so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He catches the wise in their craftiness, and again, The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile. So let no one boast about human leaders. For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future all belong to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. 6

Please rise as you are able to sing our Gradual hymn Chorus We turn to face the Reader 1 Make me a channel of your peace. Where there is hatred let me bring your love. Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord And where there's doubt, true faith in you. Oh, Master grant that I may never seek So much to be consoled as to console To be understood as to understand To be loved as to love with all my soul. 2 Make me a channel of your peace Where there's despair in life, let me bring hope Where there is darkness, only light And where there's sadness, ever joy. Chorus Deacon Deacon Deacon eluia, alleluia, alleluia. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. eluia, alleluia, alleluia. The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Matthew (Chapter ) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you 7

At the conclusion of the Gospel Deacon Chorus Sermon to go one mile, go also the second mile. Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy. But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Make me a channel of your peace It is in pardoning that we are pardoned In giving to all men that we receive And in dying that we're born to eternal life. Oh, Master grant that I may never seek So much to be consoled as to console To be understood as to understand To be loved as to love with all my soul. The Venerable John Stephens Please rise as you are able as we affirm our faith I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit 8

and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Please remain standing or kneel for our prayers At the conclusion of the Prayers of the People: Intercessor Confession and Absolution Silence is kept Rejoicing in the fellowship of Mary the mother of Jesus, and St John the Beloved, our patron and all the saints we commend ourselves and all people to your unfailing love. Merciful Father: Accept these our prayers for the sake of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; God welcomes sinners and invites them to this table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. 9

We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please rise as you are able for the Peace may exchange a sign of peace Christ is our hope; we give him glory for that great grace by which upon the cross he stretched out his hands in love to us all. By that same grace may he come, our risen Saviour, into every gesture of unity and fellowship which we make toward one another, and make the peace we share his peace. The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. During the singing of Hymn No 416 a collection will be taken. Refrain: things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, all things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all. 1 Each radiant flower that opens, each vibrant bird that sings, God made their glowing colours, God made their lively wings. Refrain 10

2 The cold wind in the winter, the pleasant summer sun, the ripe fruit in the garden, God made them every one. Refrain 3 The rocky mountain splendour, the loon's wild, haunting call, the great lakes and the prairies, the forest in the fall. Refrain 4 God gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell how great is the Creator, who has made all things well. Refrain Living God, you have revealed your Son as the Messiah. May we hear his word and follow it, and live as children of light. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. We give you thanks and praise, almighty God, through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Redeemer. He is your living Word, through whom you have created all things. By the power of the Holy Spirit 11

he took flesh of the Virgin Mary and shared our human nature. He lived and died as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. In fulfilment of your will he stretched out his hands in suffering, to bring release to those who place their hope in you; and so he won for you a holy people. He chose to bear our griefs and sorrows, and to give up his life on the cross, that he might shatter the chains of evil and death, and banish the darkness of sin and despair. By his resurrection he brings us into the light of your presence. Now with all creation we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. Holy and gracious God, accept our praise, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; who on the night he was handed over 12

to suffering and death, took bread and gave you thanks, saying, Take, and eat: this is my body which is broken for you. In the same way he took the cup, saying, This is my blood which is shed for you. When you do this, you do it in memory of me. Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we offer you this bread and this cup, giving thanks that you have made us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. We ask you to send your Holy Spirit upon the offering of your holy Church. Gather into one all who share in these sacred mysteries, filling them with the Holy Spirit and confirming their faith in the truth, that together we may praise you and give you glory through your Servant, Jesus Christ. glory and honour are yours, Father and Son, with the Holy Spirit in the holy Church, now and for ever. Amen. As our Saviour taught us, let us pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those 13

who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. We invite all baptized Christians to receive Communion at our altar. If you wish to receive a blessing please come at the same time. Intinction is not permitted as it contaminates the wine. It is acceptable to receive either bread or wine only. If you are unable to make your way to the altar please ask a sidesperson to have Communion brought to you. Gluten free wafers are available. Communion Anthem Teach me, O Lord T Attwood 14

Please rise as you are able Please sit for the notices Gracious God, lover of all, by this sacrament you make us one family in Christ your Son, one in the sharing of his body and blood, one in the communion of his Spirit. Help us to grow in love for one another and come to the full maturity of the Body of Christ. We ask this in his name. Amen Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. Please rise as you are able for the Blessing May God the holy and undivided Trinity, three persons in one God, inspire you to live as one, that you may witness to the perfect unity of God s love; And the blessing of God Almighty, (+) the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. We sing our final Hymn No 486 in Common Praise 1 Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart. 15

Deacon 2 Come, almighty to deliver, let us all thy grace receive; suddenly return, and never, never more thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray, and praise thee, without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love. 3 Finish then thy new creation pure and spotless let us be; let us see thy great salvation, perfectly restored in thee, changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. Postlude Toccata T Dubois The final organ prelude is to uplift us as we go out into the world and as such is part of our worship. Please refrain from applauding. Please join us for refreshments in the Trendell Lounge. The St John s Covenant Prayer, which we invite you to pray Infinite Lord and eternal God rouse your church in this place, restore your people s sense of Mission and revive your work in holiness and strength. By your Spirit teach us to give our energy, our time, our money, our service and our prayer that your Kingdom may be advanced here and in the entire world; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 16
