2 Welcome! We bid you a very warm welcome to our worship. As we gather in this sacred space, silent prayer and reflection helps us to prepare for the service. Prelude Words of welcome Variations sur "Christus Vincit" (Christ Reigneth) D Bédard Please rise as you are able to sing our opening Hymn No. 378 in Common Praise. 1 Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne: hark, how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own! Awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee, and hail him as thy matchless King through all eternity. 2 Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed o'er the grave, and rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save. His glories now we sing who died and rose on high, who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. 3 Crown him the Lord of peace, whose power a sceptre sways from pole to pole, that wars may cease, absorbed in prayer and praise. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Please rise as you are able to sing Hymn No 366 in Common Praise 1 Glory, in the highest glory, peace to all in all their days. Worship, thanks and praise unceasing to the Source of all we raise: reigning in the sapphire height, hidden from our mortal sight, now receive our adoration, as we make our supplication. 3

4 Children s focus 2 Jesus Christ, the world s Redeemer, Lamb of God, for sinners given, Word eternal, born of Mary, Word made flesh, the face of heaven: holy one, to you we pray, hear us in the realms of day, with the Spirit there united, and the God-head high exalted. Let us pray. Almighty God, train our eyes to discern your righteous rule, so that, standing firmly in hope before the powers of this world, we may heed your voice and be constant in your truth; through Jesus Christ, the wounded king of all. Amen. Please remain seated for a reading from the second Book of Samuel (Ch ) Now these are the last words of David: The oracle of David, son of Jesse, the oracle of the man whom God exalted, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the favourite of the Strong One of Israel: The spirit of the Lord speaks through me, his word is upon my tongue. The God of Israel has spoken, the Rock of Israel has said to me: One who rules over people justly, ruling in the fear of God, is like the light of morning, like the sun rising on a cloudless morning, gleaming from the rain on the grassy land. 4

5 Reader Is not my house like this with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. Will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire? But the godless are all like thorns that are thrown away; for they cannot be picked up with the hand; to touch them one uses an iron bar or the shaft of a spear. And they are entirely consumed in fire on the spot. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. 6

Please rise as you are able to sing our Gradual Hymn No 380 in Common Praise 1 O worship the King, all glorious above; O gratefully sing his power and his love; our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendour and girded with praise. 2 O tell of his might, O sing of his grace, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space; his chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, and dark is his path on the wings of the storm. 3 The earth with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, thy power hath founded of old, hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree, and round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea. 8 Deacon Sermon Silence for reflection Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus answered, Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me? Pilate replied, I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here. Pilate asked him, So you are a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 6 O measureless Might, ineffable Love, while angels delight to hymn thee above, the humbler creation, though feeble their lays, with true adoration shall sing to thy praise. Please rise as you are able The Venerable John Stephens Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say, I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, 8

9 and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Please remain standing or kneel for our prayers At the conclusion of the Prayers of the People Intercessor Confession and Absolution Silence is kept Rejoicing in the fellowship of Mary the mother of Jesus, and St John the Beloved, our patron and all the saints we commend ourselves and all people to your unfailing love. Merciful God: Accept these our prayers for the sake of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; God welcomes sinners and invites us to this table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. 9

10 For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please rise as you are able for the Peace Please exchange a sign of peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. During the singing of Hymn No 379 in Common Praise, a collection will be taken. 1 Rejoice, the Lord is King! Your Lord and King adore! Rejoice, give thanks and sing and triumph evermore. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice: rejoice, again I say, rejoice! 2 Jesus the Saviour reigns, the God of truth and love; when he had purged our stains, he took his seat above. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice: rejoice, again I say, rejoice! 3 His kingdom cannot fail; he rules o'er earth and heaven; the keys of death and hell are to our Jesus given. 10

11 Prayer over the gifts Lift up your heart, lift up your voice: rejoice, again I say, rejoice! 4 He sits at God's right hand till all his foes submit, and bow to his command, and fall beneath his feet. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice: rejoice, again I say, rejoice! 5 Rejoice in glorious hope; Jesus, the Judge, shall come and take his servants up to their eternal home. We soon shall hear the archangel's voice; the trump of God shall sound, rejoice! Eternal God, by your grace you have raised us up and enthroned us with Christ in the heavenly realms. Receive all we offer you this day, and lead us in those good works for which you have created us. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. 11

12 Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; we give you thanks and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord. You exalted him as Lord of all creation that he might present to you an eternal and universal kingdom: a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love, and peace. Therefore at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow as heaven and earth proclaim the glory of your name. We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, 12

13 to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory; and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, 13

14 to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. As our Saviour taught us, let us pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. 14

15 I am the bread of life, says the Lord. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry; whoever believes in me will never thirst. Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are they who trust in him! The gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. We invite all baptized Christians to receive Communion at our altar. If you wish to receive a blessing please come at the same time. Intinction is not permitted as it contaminates the wine. It is acceptable to receive either bread or wine only. If you are unable to make your way to the altar please ask a sidesperson to have Communion brought to you. Gluten free wafers are available. The sacrament of healing is available in the side chapel during Communion. Anthem Above all praise Mendelssohn Please rise as you are able Almighty God, you have made us a royal priesthood in the kingdom of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Make known his victory through us, we pray, that all the world may see his light. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. 15

Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. Please rise as you are able for the Blessing The peace of God which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. We sing our final Hymn No 381in Common Praise 1 Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to his feet your tribute bring; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, evermore his praises sing: eluia, alleluia, praise the everlasting King. 2 Praise him for his grace and favour to our forebears in distress; praise him still the same forever, slow to chide and swift to bless; alleluia, alleluia, glorious in his faithfulness. 3 Father-like he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows; in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes: alleluia, alleluia, widely as his mercy flows. 16
