3 WELCOME - A note for friends and visitors amongst us. We are glad you are here with us! A quick note about the Lutheran Divine service and what we believe about worship. To us worship isn t so much about what we do, but about what God does. Lutherans believe God is present with us through the Word and Sacraments we receive. In fact, we teach that in the Lutheran Divine Service, God comes to forgive us, to feed us, bless us and send us out into the world. Our Liturgy identifies God s performative work amongst us and as we receive this ministry of the Word and Sacrament we in turn respond to God through, responses, songs, prayers giving our thanks and praise. I am new to a Lutheran Worship Service, so should I go to the front for the Holy Communion or not? We teach that, Holy Communion is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ given with bread and wine, instituted by Christ himself for Christians to eat and drink. As you come to this sacrament, you come as: a sinner who wants God s forgiveness; a baptised believer who trusts that Jesus died for the forgiveness of sin; a guest who humbly accepts what Jesus gives: His true body and blood with the bread and wine; a witness who gladly joins us in our public confession of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord. All who do not commune are still invited to receive an individual blessing. You can communicate your intention of doing so by simply folding your arms across your chest as come forward. If you have any questions about Lutherans Divine service or Holy Communion feel free to check with the Pastor at the end of the service. Pastor John Henderson, Bishop, Lutheran Church of Australia, Monday 15th October God of true love and healing, we pray that the Prime Minister will speak the right words for this occasion, and that his words will be well received. We give thanks for the work of the Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse, which uncovered so many crimes against children and gave us cause for shame and repentance. Help us now to joyfully take the opportunities before us to support people harmed in Lutheran institutions and to improve our child protection, and to follow Jesus teachings and example more closely. We pray especially: that all people who have been betrayed and sexually abused can find help to flourish in life to love, trust and find joy in spite of their bad experiences, and for all who offer such help; for the families and friends of people who have been abused, seen and experienced the harmful impact on them firsthand, and pursued justice with them or on their behalf; that the loving actions of Christian believers might help draw people alienated from church and faith because of sexual abuse back into Christian communities and a living hope in Christ our Saviour; for willingness on the part of Christians throughout Australia to give gladly and generously to support redress for people sexually abused as children; for the workers in the LCA s Professional Standards Department and for the Bishops as they shape the church s response to the problem of child sexual abuse and as they take the lead in responding to complaints of abuse in Lutheran institutions; and that Lutheran schools, youth camps, child care and aged care facilities can promote a culture of respect, decency and caring concern for all, especially those most vulnerable. 5 PARISH COMMUNITY NEWS REFORMATION LONGEST LUTHERAN LUNCH After the Parish Reformation Service this Sunday 28 th October, we invite you all to stay for lunch in the Church Hall. This will be a COLD BUFFET sit down meal. Please bring food to share. This can include items like: cold meat platter, salads, cold quiche, cold pasta dishes, plate of sandwiches, cold chicken, cold deserts/cakes etc. We were happy to announce the engagement of Pastor Jaswanth to Mary Stella and now give thanks to God for their holy matrimony ceremony at 10:30am this Saturday, 27 th of October 2018 in Guntur, India. Pastor Jaswanth will be on leave from 22 nd of October to 12 th of November While Pastor is away Pastor Ernie Kiss will be available for any emergency pastoral care assistance. Also, Lay Assistants (Andrew Dewhirst, Sue Housego, Sheryl Parsons and Alex Sweatman) are available for any pastoral support. Please pray for Pastor Jaswanth and Mary Stella as they start their life together, and God willing, they travel safely back to Australia. BIBLE STUDY ON THE LORD S PRAYER The next Bible Study will be on Wednesday 31 st October at Margaret Burkert s place [149/2 Flinders Way, Wodonga West], at 2:00pm to 3:00pm. This will begin with a short video presentation, followed by questions and discussion time. If you want to come along, please contact Sue Housego on COME AND JOIN US FOR OUR EARLY CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON The Ladies Fellowship Luncheon at Victory College will be held on Wednesday 7 th November at 12noon in Drover Dining Room. FRONTIER s formal learning units are spread across two semesters, and delivered locally from St Luke s Lutheran Church, Albury, an offsite campus of Melbourne School of Theology.
