1 October 30, 2014 Vol. I, Issue 38 Page 1 Broadway Blast-Off Explore the Way with Broadway I am the WAY the truth and the life. (Jn. 14:6) For ALL the Saints... November begins with All Saints Day. Traditionally commemorated on November 1 and a significant contributor to American and Western Halloween traditions, All Saints Day remembers and hallows (venerates) those who have died this year. Feelings of loss and sadness coincide with the intensifying darkness and cold weather of longer fall nights. The evening prior to hallowing the saints, All Hallows Eve (a.k.a. Halloween), has become a day to mock and ridicule death as a result of the Resurrection conquering the power of eternal death for all believers. This ridicule can take the form of costume parties and sharing of sweets. Christian remembrance of saints and martyrs formally began in the A.D. 300s and remains a part of All Saints Day traditions. Catholics differentiate All Souls Day (Nov. 2) as a day to remember those believers who have passed, while All Saint s Day hallows those departed Saints. Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians bestow only certain people with the formal title of Saint, however the New Testament refers to saints simply as holy ones (Mt. 27:52), or Sunday Worship more generally, all believers in Christ, as Paul uses the term. Rob Hughes Psalm 34:1-9 Colossians 1:25-26 (click link above to read this passage) As we move from the darkness and mourning of All Saints Day toward the brightness and joy of the birth of Light at Christmas, may we celebrate those who have left us, as well as anticipate Him who comes again. In worship on Sunday, we will specifically acknowledge Broadway members who died this year, and you will also be invited to light a candle for those family members or friends who have died in years passed. If you would like to bring a PERSONAL CANDLE, one with special significance, you may bring it and set it on the table of candles in the sanctuary or bring it up with you during the time for lighting candles. 3 Page 3 Missouri Union Presbytery Meeting BPC will host the churches of Missouri Union Presbytery on Thursday, November 6, for our regular Presbytery meeting and worship. ALL ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND as pastors and members of multiple Presbyterian churches will be in attendance. Registration and fellowship begins at 8:30 a.m. Rev. Dr. Gary Hansen, Dubuque Seminary, will lead The Practice of Prayer /Spirituality, worship and Communion. The meeting adjourns at 3:30 p.m. Come for all or part of the gathering. Wednesday Night Dinners Come join us for conversation and good food we circle for prayer promptly at 5:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. The meal, including a salad bar that rivals any found in the area, is an affordable price (donation). Your reservation by Tuesday noon lets us know how many to prepare for. Invite a friend or two to join you. Women s Association The regular monthly meeting of Presbyterian Women is Thursday, November 6, 10 a.m. and will be held at the McGuire residence. World Community Day Church Women United is an ecumenical organization of Christian women who are working to strengthen families. The local CWU will gather on Friday, November 7, 1:30 p.m. at Christ and Trinity Lutheran, 3201 Southwest Blvd. in observance of World Community Day.

The Women of Faith study, His Healing Hands: Finding God in Broken Places continues on Thursdays, 6:30-8:00 p.m., at the Wileys. This enthusiastic group of seekers welcomes all women no experience necessary! For additional information, call Betsy Wiley. Monday at noon our lunchtime Bible group is reading 1 Kings. No prereading required so join in anytime. Missouri Union Presbytery youth leaders will lead this weekend event with assistance from Pastor Rob, the Brownfields, and our youth leadership team. Our 9 a.m. praise band will help lead worship! Current youth participants and friends are invited to this great event! On Halloween, carved pumpkins shed light through giant smiles. Here s to more pumpkin-sized smiles on human beings!
