The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. Before Worship As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: Prayer of the Day Almighty and everlasting God, You are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve. Pour upon us the abundance of Your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. For the Children A Cry-Room is available if your little ones need a moment. It is the first room on the left as you walk into the church building. 3 The Divine Service with Holy Communion Rite 2, p. 60 Opening Hymn: #246:1-2, God s Own Child, I Gladly Say It HOLY BAPTISM 1 P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. Confession of Sins P: Our Savior Jesus Christ commanded Baptism when he said: Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. All of us are born into this world with a deep need for Baptism. From our parents we inherit a sinful nature; we are without true fear of God and true faith in God and are condemned to eternal death. But Jesus took away our sin by giving his life on the cross. At our baptisms, he clothes us with the robe of his righteousness and gives us a new life by creating faith in him. Our sinful nature need not control us any longer. We recall what Baptism means for our daily lives as we speak these words: C: Baptism means that the sinful nature in us should be drowned by daily sorrow and repentance, and that all its evil deeds and desires be put to death. It also means that a new person should daily arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever. P: As baptized children of God we confess our sins: C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Sacrament of Baptism P: Mariah, by the power of the Word, the Holy Spirit has led you to believe that this new life in Christ is yours. Now in Holy Baptism the Lord Jesus assures you of your salvation. That you may give public testimony of your faith, I therefore ask you: Do you believe that you were born in sin and therefore eternally lost? A: Yes, I believe. P: Do you believe in the Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? A: Yes, I believe. P: Do you believe that this Triune God planned and carried out your salvation? A: Yes, I believe. P: Do you believe that God grants you the forgiveness of sins in Holy Baptism? A: Yes, I believe. P: Do you desire to be baptized? A: Yes, I do. Exhortation to Congregation P: Brothers and sisters in Christ, our Lord commands that we teach his precious truths to all who are baptized. Christian love, therefore, urges all of us to assist in whatever manner possible so that Mariah may remain a child of God until death. If you are willing to carry out this responsibility, then answer: Yes, and we ask God to help us. C: Yes, and we ask God to help us. P: Let us pray. Merciful Father in heaven, we thank you for the blessing of Baptism by which you offer and grant the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. Help us to regard our baptisms as the robe of righteousness we are to wear all the days of our lives. Look with special favor on Mariah and grant her a rich measure of your Spirit that she may grow in faith and godly living. Make us willing to carry out our responsibilities to those who have been baptized, so that all of us may finally come to the blessed joys of heaven, through Jesus our Lord. C: Amen. 5 The Salutation The Collect P: Let us pray one God, now and forever. The Lesson 1 Kings 19: There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the LORD came to him: "What are you doing here, Elijah?" 10 He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too." 11 The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by." 7 The Gospel Matthew 14: Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 25 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." 28 "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." 29 "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?" 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." This fun evening will include a meal, devotion, and games outside (including a wheelbarrow race, a sack race, tug o war, and more). Come to play or come to watch, everyone's invited. Your efforts helped the evening go smoothly. We served over 200 people and most of our families were present to go through the final registration process. We also thank Thrivent Financial for helping us with this event with preschool t-shirts, supplies and help with playground equipment. In the weeks ahead, the playground will be prepared. 23 The Peace/Mt. Olive Moms On a Mission (M.O.M.s) bible study is getting ready to begin our Fall 2017 Session! We are excited to have both a morning M.O.M.s study AND an evening M.O.M.s study this fall! Morning M.O.M.s group will again be Wednesday mornings at Mt. Olive, and childcare will be provided. Evening M.O.M.s group will be the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Mt. Olive, and there will not be childcare. MVL Celebration - Today, I share with you a very special blessing. MVL is now debt-free! At their last meeting, our Board of Directors voted to pay off the last of our individual loans, thereby eliminating our debt! What an unbelievable blessing from our Lord. Consider that in January of 2009, our debt stood at $1.8 million. We join together in thanking our gracious God for the blessings that He has showered on us in so many ways. On Sunday, August 27, we will take a few minutes after our opening service to recognize this milestone. The opening service is scheduled to begin at 1:30 pm in the MVL gymnasium.
