5 Voices II Congregation Announcement Approved by Session, September 2017 Your Session of Spring Valley Presbyterian Church recently held its annual retreat. Inspired by our church s long-time mission statement We desire to be a community empowered by the Holy Spirit, Unified by the grace of God, through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ we came up with a list of priority objectives for this year. As your Session: We will seek to be transparent to each other and to the congregation. We will seek to be a beacon to the community. We will strive to make the church debt-free. We will celebrate our shared identity as Presbyterian Christians. We will seek to grow our membership. We will seek to be listeners to each other and the congregation. We will promote spiritual growth through education, worship, prayer & fellowship. We will live our faith in such a way that others will want to unite with us in our worship and work. We will listen and respond to the word of God. We will seek unity with each other and the congregation. Ephesians 4:2-4 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit 5
6 MISSION CONTACTING OF THE SVPC MONTH NOVEMBER MISSION OF THE MONTH: FOOD INSECURITY IN SOUTH CAROLINA As we scurry to make preparations for Thanksgiving, preparing a bountiful feast for our families which will no doubt involve large amounts of a huge variety of our favorite dishes turkey, dressing, vegetables and desserts which will become leftovers to last for days we should remain mindful that Hunger and Food Insecurity are significant problems in South Carolina. Food Insecurity refers to the condition of not knowing whether food will be available or whether you can get access to needed food. There are numerous organizations with Thanksgiving food drives, both locally and nationally; and we encourage everyone to give so that those in need can have a bountiful Thanksgiving. Here are some facts regarding hunger in South Carolina: Total food insecurity rate: 18% Total number of food insecure people: 807,960 Total child food insecurity rate: 28% Total number of children who are food insecure: 292,840 South Carolina County with largest number of food insecure people: Allendale County. 36% total food insecure 40% child food insecure SC s largest cities and food insecurity rates by its respective County (overall, child) 1. Columbia, Richland County: (17%, 20%) 2. Charleston, Charleston County (16%, 24%) 3. N. Charleston, Charleston County (16%, 24%) 4. Mt. Pleasant, Charleston County (16%, 24%) 5. Rock Hill, York County (18%, 30%) We think of hunger and food insecurity as some far-away problem in third-world countries. But it is right here, in our community, in large numbers, affecting children and adults every day. Please give generously to our Backpack Program (see page 3 for details) and any other local and national hunger relief programs you can. Obviously, the need is ever-present and in our very midst. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Senior Resources, Inc., a private non-profit organization, serves Richland County. Our church has partnered with them to have our members deliver meals weekly. We currently have committed to every Thursday, starting in November. We are asking members to serve in teams of 2 for a period of approximately 2 hours. Please review the information on the left-hand side of the page at Once you have completed the forms, sign up at the link listed on the same page.
