Wishing you all a great month for the devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. There are a few things I would like to bring to your attention this month. 1. His Excellency Most. Rev. Paul Loverde, the Bishop Arlington is visiting us on June 29 th Sunday at 2pm. We would like to give His Excellency a solemn welcome since it is his first visit to Saint Jude and also his feast day. He would celebrate the Mass and we would briefly explain Syro Malabar traditions, the history of Saint Jude s and also a few traditional dance and songs. Please plan to attend and also volunteer for the things needed that day. 2. Family year We would like to consecrate this year as family year as I have already suggested you during the prayer meetings. It's a year to renew our families to deepen our fellowship within the families and with other families so that we are clearer about our vocation to love, serve and pray. If you have any suggestion that something needs to be done during the family year please let me know before June 21 st. 3. His Excellency Mar Jacob, our Bishop, is here during the last week of July and beginning of August for Pastoral visit and to administer the Most Holy Communion and Confirmation. Our Holy Communion is scheduled on August 2 nd Saturday at 10.30am at St. Veronica. Please mark your calendar. On August 3 rd Bishop will be celebrating the Mass at St. Andrews. This time, we have created a platform where we can talk with the Bishop a little closer, since he will be visiting family units combined, on July 31 st Thursday, August 1 st Friday, August 3 rd Sunday evenings. 4. Finally, remember St. Jude s in our family prayer every day. During this summer, there are many programs arranged for the children and youth, like summer bible study program, library reading program, Vacation Bible School on August 4-8 at St. Andrews from 9-4. Please mark your calendar and make sure that children don t miss it. There are other programs things too. The Charity programs like Blood donation, soup kitchen etc. are great opportunities for us give ourselves to serve the people. 5. I strongly encourage all Saint Jude family to take Saint Mission seriously, a part of your life, not as an option. Make sure to attend at least one weekday Mass with the Children. J u d e S y r o - M a l a b a r C h u r c h O f N o r t h e r n V i r g i n i a Page 4 JOY (Jude s Own Youth) RETREAT A RECAP On the weekend of May 16 18, Jude s Own Youth (JOY) participated in their first annual parish youth retreat! Read below for Matthew s personal reflection on the retreat: Last month I, along with 10 other members of JOY were blessed to participate in a youth retreat led by Brian Chettan, Anjali, and Lydia. The retreat was hosted by Shaji Uncle and Shiny Aunty. They reminded me why Malayalees are some of the most hospitable people. They graced us with several serene areas to pray, comfortable places to sleep, and timely (and delicious) meals each day. Much to my surprise, the delicious food was NOT the best part of this retreat, though it was high up there. One of the best parts of this retreat was getting to know the newer members of the youth group. Through thought provoking discussions, fun praise and worship songs, and several ice breaker activities, our youth group truly united. Another great part of this retreat were the Theology of the Body talks; we split up into groups based on gender and discussed St. John Paul II s Theology of the Body. Because there were only four males at the retreat, the atmosphere quickly changed into an open, comfortable conversation between friends about what our church teaches and how we can life holy lives as men. Lastly, I was very touched by the adoration service that we celebrated on Saturday. I remember talking with the rest of the youth group afterwards about how amazing adoration is specifically during retreats. It was obvious that there was something that opened our eyes to the beauty of the Holy Spirit s presence at adoration. We were also fortunate enough to have Tijo Achan encourage us to come to confession, where he would offer us counsel and advice. This youth retreat was truly an unforgettable start to hopefully regular JOY events, as most of our JOY members agreed. We are so fortunate to have such awesome role models in our youth leaders and our wonderful Tijo Achan. I cannot wait until the next one! Special thanks to our dear Tijo achan for his unending support of JOY, to Shiny aunty and Shaji uncle for opening their home to us and hosting this retreat, and to our dear retreat leaders, Brian (NY), Anjali (PA), and Lydia (NY) for taking the time to be with us this weekend and to help us grow in our faith! The Lord is risen! As Christ's disciples, we are called to go forth and spread the good news of His Resurrection. Our parish's many ministries are examples of how many of you answer that call. Our ministries require not only gifts of time and talent, but also of financial help. The church celebrated Mother s day on May 11th specially commemorating all our moms in St. Jude family. Tijoachan specifically offered qurbana and blessings to all moms and gave an inspiring homely about following the beautiful example of our dear Mother Mary, if we have to instill the values in our children. Thereafter, our WINGS president Nissy Thomas hosted a funfilled get-together at her residence in South Riding. Thank you Nissy for accommodating all of us at your place!!! We enjoyed the much wanted bonding with laughter, games and food. We want to thank our husbands for taking care of house and kids during that period of time. Kids can send their selected verse by using the Send Your Bible Verse section on the weekly chapter assignment page. They need to mention the chapter number and the verse they memorized. All the verses sent will be reviewed and published online with their names. This is a six week program and all the enrolled kids will follow the weekly chapter assignment from the links on the left. This year, the feast of the Sacred Heart will be on June 20, The Sacred Heart of Jesus depicts a flaming heart shining with divine light,a chain around the middle, a crown of thorns on the top, surmounted by a cross, and bleeding. Devotion to the Sacred Hearty began around The origin if the Sacred Heart is as follows: Our Lord Jesus had repeatedly visited a nun in France who goes by the name of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. He explained to her that the devotion of the Scared Heart because he wanted his brothers and sisters to practice it. He asks for acts of reparation, frequent communion, communion on the First Friday of each month, and the keeping of the Holy Hour (adoration). The Sacred Heart of Jesus should also help us gather together as a family, and as a community. Devotion to the Sacred Heart was also an essential component of Pope John Paul 2's hopes for a " new evangelization " called for by the the Church.The Sacred Heart represents Jesus' heart as His Heart of Flesh. Jesus said this on one of the nights he visited St. Margaret: "Behold this Heart which has loved men so much, and yet men do not want to love Me in return. Through you My divine Heart wishes to spread its love everywhere on earth."- Jesus to Saint Margaret Mary
