Wishing you all every blessings of Assumption of our dear Mother Mary and a very happy Indian Independence day! We begin our CCD on September 15th, I talked with a youth, not from our parish, about the struggles and crisis she had gone through in her faith life. She told me about the identity crisis of our children. The following wrong ideas have been strongly injected into the minds of our kids. 1. Our little ones think Malayalam Qurbana is just a translation of the Latin rite English Qurbana. They don t know what they have received as a Syro Malabar Catholic. 2. They consider Syro-Malabar Qurbana identical with Malayalam Qurbana. They identify Malayalam Palli as Syro Malabar Palli and they think being a Malayalee Catholic and Syro Malabar Catholic are synonymous. 3. Our Youth might think wearing a Saree on Easter or having some Indian food or playing some Indian games or something related to those would make them Syro Malabar Catholic. The end result of these wrong ideas is an identity crisis for our children. We need to let them know that being a Malayalee Catholic and Syro Malabar Catholic are not the same. It is not the language or the Malayalee culture which makes you a Syro Malabar catholic. One could be a hindi or English speaking person, who never came to Kerala or knew malayalee culture, and still be a Syro Malabar Catholic. So learning our Church, learning the faith helps our CCD children to know who really are they; their faith and identity as Syro Malabar Catholic. We are introducing this year Syro Malabar Catechism too, together with the faith series. Another important solution is the parents. Teenagers tend to listen to their friends but observe and follow their parents. They don t want to listen to their parents but follow what they do. If we get out of the church before the Mass end, they would not even consider going to church when they grow up. If we stay outside the church during Mass, they might consider the same when they grow up. If the parents are strong to keep their Syro Malabar identity and their faith passed on from St. Thomas, the children would never face the identity problems, I mentioned above. If the parents are facing identity crisis as a Syro Malabar Catholic, I d recommend knowing and learning their faith first. May Good Lord bless you. Sincerely yours in Christ Jesus Tijoachan Our Vision is to create a vibrant Syro-Malabar community that nurtures spiritual growth, celebrates the sacraments, and fosters community ties and leadership

Considering this as our annual retreat the parish members actively participated in the festival that took place during July 26, 27 and 28. Under the strong leadership of Fr. Tijo Mullakkara and J Joseph a dedicated and fully committed team of volunteers worked hard well in advance for the preparations of Shalom Festival. That resulted in tremendous success of this program which enabled more than 500 participants achieve spiritual enlightenment and replenishment. Shalom Festival offered an opportunity to reconnect with our Lord through the Word of God, talks by international preachers, gracious presence of spiritual leaders, and joyful praise and worship. Every day of the program began with Holy Mass and ended with Eucharistic Adoration. The Shalom Festival was a time to come together in solidarity to pray and sing aloud, and renew ourselves in the love of Jesus Christ!

Malayalam and English Music competitions were held on the first day. The kids enthusiastically participated in the music competition. Second day competitions include Bible Jeopardy, Bible Story Telling and Prayer. The Bible Jeopardy competition portrayed the deep Bible knowledge of our kids at this small age. The third day witnessed some fierce competitions in Public Speaking, Essay Writing and Fancy Dress. The fancy dress competition was reserved only for the kids under five years and the audience really enjoyed the innocent performance of the little ones. It was a great opportunity for the young talents to showcase the gift of god on stage. Special thanks to Tomy Paul, Nissy Varghese, Starina Jose and Meera Paul for coordinating the 2013 Annual Sunday school competitions.

The Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven was dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950 in the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus. It is celebrated on August 15 and is a Holy Day of Obligation. There are 9 liturgical seasons in the Syro Malabar church. They are Subara (Annunciation), Denha (Epiphany), Sawma Rabba (Great Feast), Qyamta (Resurrection), Slihe (Apostles), Qaita (Summer), Elijah-Silba Muse (Elijah-Cross Moses), Qudas-Edta (Dedication of the Church). Saint's corner for Kids - Fr. Damien There was a time, when the disease Leprosy was thought to be highly contagious and incurable. People looked at lepers with contempt and great fear. No one wanted to have any contact with the lepers with the fear that they may get the disease. These unfortunate people lived a life deprived of dignity and respect and were segregated to separate villages far away from the general population. Island Molokai village in Hawaii was an example of one of these villages which was set apart for people with leprosy. Nobody dared to go to these leprosy settlements, besides the government officials who supplied the towns with food for the patients. In 1873, Father Damien, a Catholic priest volunteered to stay with these poor people to be their priest. That was the very first time someone had volunteered to be with the lepers, because working with lepers was considered to be a death sentence. For 16 years he stayed in Molokoi taking care of their spiritual as well as physical needs. Fr. Damien helped these abandoned people by treating them, dressing their wounds and being with them as one of their own. He improved their living conditions by providing them dignity and unconditional love. On April 15, 1998, the disease finally caught up with him. Father Damien died of leprosy at the age of 49. "I make myself a leper with the lepers to gain all to Jesus Christ" said Fr. Damien. Today the Catholic church looks up to him as the patron saint for leprosy and outcasts. Belgium, where Fr.Damien was born in 1840, chose him as the "The Greatest Belgian" throughout the country's history in a poll conducted among its citizens.
