Wishing you all a very Happy Feast day of Dukarana (St. Thomas Day)! Let us go to die with Him (Jn 11:16) are the words of our father in faith St. Thomas the Apostle. I always thought why did Thomas say that he would love to die with Jesus? Was that a quick remark of a thoughtless disciple who blindly loved Jesus? I don t think so. What does it mean to die then? In the following Chapter Saint John explains to us the meaning of dying and how necessary it is to bear fruit. In all truth I tell you, unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies it yields a rich harvest (Jn 12:24). In fact, there is no meaning if a grain doesn t die according to Saint John. We need to die if we need to have a life in Christ. Saint Paul explains it again in his letter to Romans: if we died with Christ, then we shall live with him too (Romans 6:8). Eternal life lies in dying to self in order to live in Christ. If we meditate well we can understand that the words of our father in faith has got very deep meaning. It was not a mere acclamation of a thoughtless person blinded by love. Rather, it was more of an acclamation of a disciple who understood his Master very well. They were the words of a wise man. One day in AD 72, Saint Thomas literally kept his promise and desire to die with/for Christ. He became a Martyr in Mylapore (Tamil Nadu), India. He was buried in Mylapore and his mortal remains are kept in Azhikode also (diocese of Irinjalakuda) where Saint Thomas landed in Kerala for the first time. I d recommend you to visit his shrine in Azhikode, when you go to Kerala. Never miss him. As we remember (Dukrana) our Father in Faith, Saint Thomas, let us be thankful to him for bringing Christ to us. And also, let us keep to our heart one of the basic teachings of Saint Thomas if we don t die with Him, we don t live with Him. Sincerely yours in Christ Jesus Tijoachan Our Vision is to create a vibrant Syro-Malabar community that nurtures spiritual growth, celebrates the sacraments, and fosters community ties and leadership

Out of the 19 children, 10 of them celebrated the Sacrament of First Holy Communion while the remaining 9 children celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation. The ceremony began at 1:30 in the afternoon at St.Verionica Church, Chantilly. A warm and colorful welcome was accorded to the bishop who was greeted with a flower bouquet and then was accosted to church while being welcomed by scores of men and women holding colorful umbrellas. The liturgy began with a solemn procession by the children while singing Msgr.Jacob Kallarackal s most popular hymn Va Va Yesunadha. With the bishop presiding the liturgy, Fr.Tijo Mullakkara, Fr.James Nirappel and Fr.Lijoy Thannikal O.Carm were the co-celebrants. The whole community joined the 19 candidates, along with their families, relatives and friends in praying and praising the Almighty as the candidates were initiated into the sacraments in a moving but solemn ceremony. Congratulations to all the children who received their first Holy Communion and Confirmation. We also congratulate Alan Saju and Theresa (Tara) Alex Kadapurathu who received first holy communion at St. Timothy Church and St. Veronica Church respectively.

Soup Kitchen We have active volunteers from our community who regularly visit Missionaries of Charity (MOC) every month for Soup Kitchen. This time, we visited MOC on 28 th June where nearly 70 people turned up for lunch. It was amazing to see the amount of work our younger volunteers Joel (9), Joeanna (7), Jolena (3) put in, to feed the hungry. They not only helped in cutting fruits and vegetables but also in serving. Observing his dad and mom serve, Joel would politely ask, Would you like to have Doughnuts? and people would smile and push their plates forward and say Yes Sir. If you would also like to experience this virtue of serving with your family, please join us on Sat. 27 th July for Soup Kitchen at MOC. Please contact Sherly Vadakkoot for further details at sherly1810@gmail.com.

Mid Atlantic Conference (MAC) Thanks to the prayers and support of many, the Mid Atlantic Conference (MAC) that took place on Memorial Day weekend was a great success. Over 120 youth participated in the MAC from the local Syro Malabar Churches in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. Under the direction of Fr. Vinod Madathiparambil, the youth engaged in various faith formation and faith sharing activities and had many opportunities to build deeper relationships with other youth in the Mid-Atlantic region. Each night ended with a beautiful time of Adoration which provided the youth an opportunity to offer all they had learned and experienced during the day to the Lord in prayer. Let us continue to pray for the youth in our region and our Syro Malabar family. We pray that our youth continue to deepen their relationship with Jesus and with the Syro Malabar Church that Jesus established through St. Thomas. We also pray that our youth continue to grow in friendship with their brothers and sisters in the region. In the Raza, the word Raza itself is used 26 times both in singular and plural forms. Saint's corner for Kids - St. Maximilian Kolbe Auschwitz was a notorious prison camp located in Poland. Hundreds of thousands of innocent people were killed here during World War II, most of them just because they were born as Jews. At the end of July 1941, three prisoners somehow escaped from the camp. Authorities were furious. They picked 10 men to be starved to death in order to teach a lesson to other prisoners and to deter them from trying to escape. One of the men, who were selected, started to cry loudly, "My poor wife! My poor Children! I will never see them again". When he sobbed uncontrollably, one of the other prisoners boldly came forward and told the guards "I am a Catholic priest. Let me take his place. He has a wife and children. Let him go, I will die instead". That priest was Fr. Maximilian Kolbe. Prison guards were surprised; but they granted his wish and put Fr. Kolbe in a condemned cell along with the selected prisoners. After weeks of starvation, one by one died. Finally Fr. Kolbe was killed in the cell by injecting a lethal poison. He accepted death with no complaints. Jesus said "Greater love has no one than this; to lay down one's life for one's friends" (John 15:13). Fr. Kolbe followed our Lord's teaching by giving up his life for a total stranger. And today He is revered in the church as a Saint and people across the world remember him fondly for his unconditional self-sacrifice. Fr.
