Pope Francis ask us to reconsider the heart of fasting this Lenten season. According to Pope Francis, fasting must never become superficial. He often quotes the early Christian mystic St. John Chrysostom who said: No act of virtue can be great if it is not followed by advantage for others. So, no matter how much time you spend fasting, no matter how much you sleep on a hard floor and eat ashes and sigh continually, if you do no good to others, you do nothing great. But this isn t to downplay the role of sacrifice during the Lenten season. Lent is a good time for penance and selfdenial. But once again, Francis reminds us that these activities must truly enrich others: I distrust a charity that costs nothing and does not hurt. So, if we re going to fast from anything this Lent, Pope Francis suggests that we fast from indifference towards others. In his annual Lenten message, the pope writes, Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians. Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience. Describing this phenomenon he calls the globalization of indifference, Pope Francis writes that whenever our interior life becomes caught up in its own interests and concerns, there is no longer room for others, no place for the poor. God s voice is no longer heard, the quiet joy of his love is no longer felt, and the desire to do good fades. He continues that, We end up being incapable of feeling compassion at the outcry of the poor, weeping for other people s pain, and feeling a need to help them, as though all this were someone else s responsibility and not our own. But when we fast from this indifference, we can began to feast on love. In fact, Lent is the perfect time to learn how to love again. Jesus the great protagonist of this holy season certainly showed us the way. In him, God descends all the way down to bring everyone up. In his life and his ministry, no one is excluded. What are you giving up for Lent? It s a question a lot of people will get these next few days. If you want to change your body, perhaps alcohol and candy is the way to go. But if you want to change your heart, a harder fast is needed. This narrow road is gritty, but it isn t sterile. It will make room in ourselves to experience a love that can make us whole and set us free. Now that s something worth fasting for. To meditate: - If one member suffers, all suffer together [The Church] (1 Cor 12:26) Where is your brother? [Parishes and Communities] (Gen 4:9) Make your hearts firm! 4 Volume 7 Issue 2 St. Jude Syro-Malabar Church Of Northern Virginia Page 4 MARCH FOR LIFE Many believers from all over United States, gathered in DC on January 22, 2016 for March for life event braving the bad weather. Under the leadership of Jesus Youth, various young and adult from Syro-Malabar attended the march. The 4Life conference, VIVO 16 event had to be cancelled due to inclement weather. Brief History: The March for Life is an annual pro-life rally protesting abortion, held in Washington, D.C., on or around the anniversary of the United States Supreme Court's decision legalizing abortion in the case Roe v. Wade. The march is organized by the March for Life Education and Defense Fund. The overall goal of the march is to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision and reduce access to the procedure. The first March for Life, which was founded by Nellie Gray, was held on January 22, 1974, on the West Steps of the Capitol, with an estimated 20,000 supporters in attendance. The March for Life proceedings begin around noon. They typically consist of a rally at the National Mall near Fourth Street. It is followed by a march which travels down Constitution Avenue NW, turns right at First Street and then ends on the steps of the Supreme Court of the United States, where another rally is held. Many protesters start the day by delivering roses and lobbying members of Congress.

Nothing specifically about the mysteries of his hidden life or the public life. Normally people like us are very curious to know about the early life of Jesus. Where was Jesus, before he started his public ministry? People makes up so many stories related to the topic. Why Gospel fails to mention details of His early life? The Gospels were written by men who were among the first to have faith and wanted to share it with others. Having known Jesus in faith, they could see and make others see the traces of his mystery in all his earthly life. His humanity appeared as sacrament, that is, the sign and instrument, of his divinity and of the salvation he brings: what was visible in his earthly life leads to the invisible mystery of his divine sonship and redemptive mission. Christ s whole life is a mystery of redemption. Redemption comes to us above all through the blood of his cross, but this mystery is at work throughout Christ s entire life. Christ s whole life is a mystery of recapitulation. All Jesus did, said, and suffered had for its aim restoring fallen man to his original vocation. Christ enables us to live in him all that he himself lived, and he lives it in us. By his Incarnation, he, the Son of God, has in a certain way united himself with each man. We are called only to become one with him, for he enables us as the members of his Body to share in what he lived for us in his flesh as our model. We must continue to accomplish in ourselves the stages of Jesus life and his mysteries and often beg him to perfect and realize them in us and in his whole Church. The coming of God s Son to earth is an event of such immensity that God willed to prepare for it over centuries. He makes everything converge on Christ: all the rituals and sacrifices, figures and symbols of the First Covenant. Jesus was born in a humble stable, into a poor family. Simple shepherds were the first witnesses to this event. In this poverty heaven s glory was made manifest. To become a child in relation to God is the condition for entering the kingdom. For this, we must humble ourselves and become little. Only when Christ is formed in us will the mystery of Christmas be fulfilled in us. Jesus circumcision, on the eighth day after his birth, is the sign of his incorporation into Abraham s descendants, into the people of the covenant. It is the sign of his submission to the Law and his deputation to Israel s worship, in which he will participate throughout his life. The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Savior of the world. The presentation of Jesus in the temple shows him to be the firstborn Son who belongs to the Lord. The flight into Egypt and the massacre of the innocents make manifest the opposition of darkness to the light. During the greater part of his life Jesus spent the day without evident greatness, but with manual labor. With obedience to his mother and legal father he fulfills the fourth commandment perfectly and was the temporal image of his filial obedience to his Father in heaven. The hidden life at Nazareth allows everyone to enter into fellowship with Jesus by the most ordinary events of daily life.

St. Juan lived a simple life as a weaver, farmer, and laborer. One morning, while on his way for Holy Mass, Mother Mary appeared before Juan and asked Juan to tell the bishop to build a church on that site. The bishop was kind but skeptical. He asked Juan to bring proof of the Lady's identity. Before Juan could go back to the Lady, he found out his uncle was dying. Hurrying to get a priest, Juan missed his meeting with the Lady. The Lady, however, met him on his path and told him that his uncle had been cured. She then told Juan to climb to the top of the hill where they first met. Juan was shocked to find flowers growing in the frozen soil. He gathered them in his cloak and took them at once to the bishop. Juan told the bishop what had happened and opened his cloak. The flowers that fell to the ground were Castilian roses (which were not grown in Mexico). But the bishop's eyes were on the glowing image of the Lady imprinted inside Juan's cloak. Soon after, a church was built on the site where our Lady appeared, and thousands converted to Christianity. Our Lady of Guadalupe was declared the patroness of the Americas. Juan Diego deeply loved the Holy Eucharist, and by special permission of the Bishop he received Holy Communion three times a week, a highly unusual occurrence in those times. St. Juan died on May 30, 1548, at the age of 74.
