4 Liturgy Corner Two New Saints! A massive audience showed up to see a historic dual papal canonization the first in history. Pope Francis presided over the event, which was a public proclamation of Popes John Paul II and John XXIII s sainthood. It was an unprecedented canonization ceremony: Pope Francis, accompanied by his predecessor, Benedict XVI, canonize the initiator of the Second Vatican Council, Blessed John XXIII, as well as Blessed John Paul II, known as the "Pilgrim Pope." Father Lombardi commented on the choice of April 27 Divine Mercy Sunday, which is held the second Sunday of Easter for the canonizations. He explained that the Holy Father chose this date because of John Paul II s devotion to Divine Mercy and because his beatification also took place on Divine Mercy Sunday in 2011, which fell on May 1. Pope John Paul II died on the eve of Divine Mercy Sunday in The lives of both saints have enriched our own understanding of sanctity as a radical and deeply personal testament of God s mercy in a broken world. Though less well known to many 21st-century Catholics, John XXIII also forged a path to holiness marked by an ordered life of prayer and a humble dependence on God in all things. His published diary, Journal of a Soul, presents the simple principles that shaped his life as a priest, diplomat and pope. "Entrust myself at all times to Divine Providence," and "Always acknowledge my own nothingness" are among the precepts that guided his spiritual progress from his teenage years in a junior seminary. Karol Wojtyla and Angelo Roncalli were cradle Catholics, raised in the faith during the same century and on the same continent, yet their beliefs and their desire for virtue would be tested in starkly different ways. Roncalli grew up in Italy, one of 14 children raised in a peasant family. He served in the Italian military during the First World War and later advanced through the Holy See s diplomatic corps before he was made a cardinal in Karol Wojtyla was the youngest of three children fathered by a retired Army officer and a devout Catholic in Wadowice, Poland. By the time Karol was 20, he had lost every member of his family. He would narrowly evade arrest by the Nazis while studying at an underground seminary, and he later dueled with the Soviet-backed Polish government and secret police during his years as the cardinal-archbishop of Krakow. Did you miss the Quick Journey Through the Bible: an 8 week bible study class? Those who attend the fall and winter class expressed how helpful it was to their understanding of the bible especially making the readings at Mass more meaningful. Would you like to attend? I would like to offer another session either in June and July. Parents, think about enriching your scriptural knowledge after the kids get out of school. I would love to hear from you. This class can be offered either day or evening. I have calendared the 24 week session The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. It will begin September 11 th and run through March 19 th with breaks for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This session will be held on Thursday evenings. I will also offer the session during the day on Wednesday. Do not let the 24 weeks deter you from attending, as the sessions are easily to make up. Low Gluten Host (0.01%) St. John s has purchased a new low gluten host. If you need to receive the Blessed Eucharist with this low gluten host please follow these procedures at Mass. At communion time arrange yourself to be the last person in the priest line. When it is your turn to receive tell the priest you need a low gluten host and he will go to the tabernacle to get you one and then give you communion. 5 Introducing SJB s 1st Inaugural Cinco de Mayo Festival Our 1st annual Cinco de Mayo Festival is coming to SJB on Sunday, May 17, (Diecisiete de Mayo), 11am 4pm. This Fiesta will bring SJB school families, parish members, and the community together to celebrate the Mexican-American holiday, while showcasing the spirit of SJB and generating funds to support our school. Come out for a fun afternoon of family-friendly carnival games, live Mariachi music, and free entertainment. Kids will enjoy a cake-walk, bouncy-house and taking a swing at their favorite piñata. Win cool prizes with games like Pin the Tail on the Donkey and Rings around the Sombrero! Authentic Mexican fare, made by parishioners, will be available for lunch, including tacos, quesadillas, along with beans, rice, chips and salsa. Enjoy buñuelos a traditional Mexican treat, and refreshing aguas frescas! Fiesta food and games will be available for purchase with pre-paid tickets. Mention this article, or bring the Fiesta Flyer to receive four tickets for the price of two. Mexican beer and margaritas will be available for purchase by adults. Join the partido! 6 SJB SCHOOL NEWS The Saint John the Baptist Annual Jog-A-Thon was hosted on Thursday, May 1st at the Milwaukie High School. All parent, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and younger siblings who attended had a great time. We have been doing money jumps every Monday for the children that have donated money for this affair. We have been doing this fundraiser for years and all the children were happy to participate. Laps are being totaled to calculate which students ran the most laps in the class, they will have their name put on a plaque. Also, students who ran more laps than our principal, Mr. Havens, will receive a free dress pass. This was an important fundraiser for the school and everyone was happy to participate. Thank you for supporting your Catholic school. Mark your calendar Thursday May 29 th at 7 pm training will be offered. Please call Pat at the Parish office. A personal invitation from Jesus! Eucharist Ministers & Lectors: St. John s is in great need of more ministers to help at Mass. The 5:30pm Saturday Vigil Mass has the greatest need but there is also the need at other Masses. You are invited to do some soul searching and hopefully be moved to call Pat at the parish office to sign up for this training class. The Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to a full, conscious and active participation in the liturgy. Such participation by the people as a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a redeemed people (1 Peter 2-9) is their right and duty by reason of their baptism. Being fully engaged in the liturgy involves more than being present at the liturgy. It requires offering one s entire self to the service of worship. The critical question we must ask ourselves is What do I give to the liturgy? How is my self-offering a sign of worship?
