5 2016 Financial Commitment Update It s not too late to make your pledge; ~ Pick up a pledge card in the back of church or call the parish office PARTICIPATION: 31% % OF GOAL: 52% We are holding steady as a percentage of our goal, though we did get a few more pledges this week. If you haven t gotten your pledge in, please make an extra effort to do so this week it s important that everyone participate, even if it is only in prayer.
6 Liturgy Corner -compiled by Pat Raschio (sources At Home With The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook) The meaning of today's Liturgy is subtle and many-layered. We need background to understand what's happening in today's First Reading. Babylon having been defeated, King Cyrus of Persia decreed that the exiled Jews could return home to Jerusalem. They rebuilt their ruined temple and finished rebuilding the city walls. The stage was set for the renewal of the covenant and the re-establishment of God s laws as the people's rule of life. Ezra and the Jewish people are renewing the Covenant in today s first reading. When the Law was read the people wept. Why? They wept over their sin and consequent punishment. But, Ezra told the people not to weep but to rejoice, since the Covenant was being renewed. This was a time for celebrating God s Law and the blessings that come from the Covenant. The sadness of the Jews was caused by their history of sin and also the rigor of the Law that called them to give up things that they were attached to. The Law called Israel to sacrifice many of the things of this world for the sake of obtaining the spiritual blessings of God, we too experience sadness in cutting our attachments to the world. The messianic proclamation that Jesus begins in this episode from Luke will become broader and deeper as the Gospel advances and will not be fully explicated until Acts of the Apostles. As Catholics we believe that Jesus himself is the principle of unity between the Old and New Testaments, the key to salvation history. Jesus selected the passage from Isaiah to introduce the purpose of his public ministry, which was to bring God s freedom and salvation to humanity. Just as a Jubilee Year was a new beginning for the people of Israel, so Jesus coming is a new beginning for each of us. The Jubilee Year was a time when debts were to be forgiven, slaves were to be set free, and properties returned to their original owners. The concept of the Jubilee Year applies to us, in that our debt of sin has been forgiven, we have been released from the bondage of sin and we can reclaim our heavenly inheritance. Whenever we accept the good news of the Gospel, we enter into our own Jubilee Year and can have a fresh beginning. Jesus, in turn, declares that Isaiah's prophecy is fulfilled in Him. Jesus' ministry will include bringing glad tidings to the poor, liberty to captives, healing to the sick, freedom to the oppressed, and proclaiming a year acceptable to the Lord. Merciful Like the Father. Today s readings prepare us for the Jubilee Year Pope Francis has proclaimed. We have been given a new start through Jesus. Our sins have been forgiven. We are to bring glad tidings to the poor, visit those in prison, care of the sick, feed and clothe the poor. January 25 th is the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle. Paul is a good example of the gift of God s mercy for us to follow. This feast celebrates God s triumph even in the most unlikely circumstances. Imagine yourself among those early Christians and hearing that Saul (the most dreaded persecutor of Christians) has encountered the Lord and changed his life entirely to serve the Lord. The conversion of St. Paul is proof that no one is too far beyond the call of the Lord to follow and that in Christ, change for the better is always possible. The first approach we have to learn mercy is through the scripture and second is through prayer. Pray through St. Paul for our own deeper conversion. May we be tireless apostles for the Gospel and emulate St. Paul s profound love of Christ. How do today s readings help you appreciate the role of Scripture in the Mass and in the life of the community? What do you believe is your gift in and for the Church as a member of the body of Christ?
7 WHAT GIFTS HAVE YOU BEEN BLESSED WITH? Each of us has certain skills and talents; skills are learned over time but talents are innate. When you combine your skills and talents you get strengths. At St. John s we have renewed our strengths program, to help people discover and develop their strengths. Rather than trying to fix weaknesses, developing your strengths can give you a new and powerful sense of purpose in your life, strengthen relationships and transform your life. People who have completed the Living Your Strengths program report being more understanding of others, patient, collaborative, and forgiving. Living Your Strengths is both a book and a process. It is the result of research with over 3 million people in a forty-year span. In conversations, focus groups and surveys, Dr. Donald Clifton and the Gallup Organization identified 34 themes of talent, or strength, that people possess in one degree or another. Following that research, Clifton and his team developed the StrengthsFinder, an online questionnaire that takes only a half an hour to complete. At the end of the half hour, an individual has a list of his or her Top 5 Signature themes the five ways in which we naturally interact with people and information most strongly. Here is where this process becomes really amazing: you have a 1 in 278,000 chance of meeting someone with the same Top 5 strengths as you in your lifetime, and a 1 in 33 million chance of meeting someone with your Top 5 in the same order. We are, indeed, uniquely created to serve God in wonderful and powerful ways! Give it a try Find out more about the program by contacting Libbie Allen in the parish office. The Brennan and concannon family in Ireland will mark the third anniversary of the passing of their uncle, Father Cathal Brennan, who died Jan. 19, May he Rest in Peace with The Lord, wrote Gerard Concannon. He s sadly missed. The anniversary Mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 24, at St. Conleth s Church, Kilconly, Tuam, County Galway, Ireland. St. John the Baptist will have a Mass said for the repose of Fr. Brennan s soul on Sunday, March 6 at 7:30am.
