We delivered 18,728lbs of food to 161 of those households and gave $ in rent and utilities help to 16 of those families. We are always in need of cooking oil, small containers of oatmeal/hot cereal, toilet paper, potatoes, peanut butter, commercial jellies & Jam, jiffy muffin mixes and hearty soups and Tom Ramen. Could you adopt-a-case of chili, soups, top ramen, TP, tooth brushes, tooth paste? Winco, Costco, and the Dollar Store are great places to get good deals. We really need lots of help!!! Our donation barrel is located in the back of church (NO CLOTHING PLEASE) and our boxes will be out on Saturday & Sunday, Aug.2 & 3, Thank you for your generous help to these families in need! May God bless you. K I D S C L O T H I N G D R I V E This is a perfect time to shop for back-to-school kids clothes and to help grade school-age children in North Clackamas County succeed. The Children s Clothing Center needs new underwear, socks, shirts, (specialty tops for girls) for both boys and girls whose families would otherwise not be able to provide for them. The Clothing Center is a ministry of St. John s Episcopal Church in Milwaukie. Since 2006, they have provided back-to-school clothes for over 1000 children, who are referred through their school counselors or social workers. Families bring their children to shop on an appointment basis, and volunteer personal shoppers provide a welcoming, supportive atmosphere while assisting children in selecting clothing and accessories. and our St. John s Catholic Church community has been asked to help collect donations. Please bring new clothing to church on the weekend of August 23 rd and 24 th, and put them in the designated basket at the back of church, or bring your donations to the parish office any time this month. 6 Setting up for morning Mass Thank you to the generous people who have stepped forward to assist at daily Mass. We still need a couple people who would be willing to be trained to substitute for these volunteers. As we all know there are times we all need backup. So please think about this and call Pat at the parish office. Low Gluten Host (0.01%) St. John s has purchased a new low gluten host. If you need to receive the Blessed Eucharist with this low gluten host please follow these procedures at Mass. At communion time arrange yourself to be the last person in the priest line. When it is your turn to receive tell the priest you need a low gluten host and he will go to the tabernacle to get you one and then give you communion. If you have questions please call Pat at the parish office. The 2014 Archbishop s Catholic Appeal has raised over $3.4 million in pledges but still needs our help to reach the overall goal. Archdiocesan volunteers will be making phone calls starting July 22 nd to parishioners who have not yet given to this important appeal. The calls will run through the end of August. There are envelopes in the back of church; this is an easy way to help support our Archbishop. Children s Liturgy of the Word is being cancelled until further notice. We have two volunteers who have to quit due to other commitments leaving us only one volunteer. So until more volunteers step forward and are trained we will discontinue this ministry to the children. If your child goes out for liturgy of the word you might consider this an opportunity for you to serve your church and child. What does this entail? At the 10am Mass you will lead the children out of the church to a room in the parish center where the Sunday readings are read from the Children s lectionary and then we spend time on the meaning of the readings in the lives of the children. There is material available to guide you through this time. Please call Pat at the parish office or pat.raschio@gmail.com to get more information or to volunteer. 7 Liturgy Corner: compiled by Pat Raschio What is your new life in Christ worth to you? Are you willing to sell all that you have in order to possess the kingdom He promises to us? Today's Gospel concludes three weeks of readings from the 13 th Chapter of Matthew's Gospel. Throughout these three weeks we have heard Jesus teaching crowds about the kingdom of heaven, and we have heard Jesus interpret some of his teachings for the disciples. We too must discover the kingdom anew, to find it as a treasure - a pearl of great price. By comparison with the kingdom, we must count all else as rubbish. And we must be willing to give up all that we have all our priorities and plans in order to gain it. Like the person who found the buried treasure and the merchant who acquired the pearl of great price, we seek to find the signs of the kingdom of heaven in our lives. All the reflection on these past three weeks has challenged to take a good look at our lives, to go deep inside ourselves, and see if we are truly living for the Kingdom Jesus has promised. Below are some suggestions of soul searching we might try. Consider what you would ask for if you received the offer given Solomon. Make a list of the things that you consider most important, such as family, friends, faith, trust, and love. In today s parables, Jesus teaches us that it is worth giving up even valuable things in order to possess the kingdom of heaven. Look at the list you made and reflect on how these things are important to the kingdom of heaven. Sort through the treasures and trash of our homes, look at each item and determine if it is necessary or something we can give away. The act of cleaning becomes meaningful in the light of the Gospel. Attend St. Clare presentation and give God the gift of time. (sources; various articles) Adult Enrichment Happenings St. Clare Prayer Presentation is only two weeks away! Make plans now to attend on August 8 th at 7-8pm in the Saalfled room of the parish center. Sr. Guadalupe from the Franciscan Spirituality Center will help you grow in the Spirituality of St. Clare. Sister will led us in the style of St. Clare s simple, austere life of prayer. This will give you a time during our summer slow downs to take some time away from our worldly cares to encounter our Lord. How can we grow in our prayer life? A Psalm of Clare s Prayerfulness: My soul is aflame with the light of your love, my God. Within your presence my spirit is absorbed into the bliss of eternal sunlight. The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation is +a 24 week Bible study will begin September 11 th and run through March 19 th 7pm until 8:30ish with breaks for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The session will be held on Thursday s in the Saalfled room of the parish center. The Bible Timeline is a fascinating study that takes you on a journey through the entire Bible. You will go deep into each period of salvation history and discover the amazing story woven throughout all of Scripture. Using a unique color-coded system, you will learn the major people, places, and events of the Bible and see how together they form the foundation of our faith. Do not let the 24 weeks deter you from attending, as the sessions are easily to make up. Thank you to the several who have already registered for this class. I welcome others to commit themselves to diving deeper into the Scripture. Please contact Pat at or pat.raschio@gmail.com if you have questions or to register. Are you interested in a Wednesday class time? If enough interest is expressed I will offer the same series. Please call

8 Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Do you know someone who has expressed an interest in the Catholic faith or have questions you cannot answer? Invite them to visit an RCIA class. Call Pat at the parish office for dates. People come to a Catholic RCIA for many reasons: Some want to better understand a family member's religion. Some have children in the school and want to understand the faith their child is being taught. Some are attracted to the Catholic Church for its style of worship, or its moral beliefs, or its sense of tradition. Some Catholics want to update their own knowledge of the Catholic faith. For whatever you are interested in, we hope you feel welcome! The Catholic Inquiry is a time to explore and learn about Catholicism. It is also a first step for adults who wish to be baptized or for people who have already been baptized in another denomination and now wish to be Catholic. RCIA: WHAT TO EXPECT Anyone taking part in the RCIA can expect to attend meetings where they will learn the fundamentals of the Catholic faith, and have the opportunity to have their own questions answered. RCIA is offered on Tuesday evenings 7-8:30pm in the parish center. We will begin our session August 26 th. Please call or Pat to register or if you have questions or pat.raschio@gmail.com Making A Difference You are powerful. You have the ability to truly make a difference in your own life, and in the lives of others. You can do it by giving of yourself in prayer, service, and sharing. Faithful giving is a fruit of spiritual maturity. Here are some things to consider: Prayer Prayers of Praise and Thanksgiving connect all the things you are thankful for to our God who places those blessings in your life. Try thanking God for all the challenges too those challenges just may bring you closer to God. Prayers of Petition are what most of us think of when we think of praying to God. Our God is a mighty God and He knows when we are troubled and hurting. Think of how many of us all throughout the world pray constantly for God to help us in our time of need. He can handle it all. Prayers of petition are easy. Try asking God for the outcome rather than the action; see if that makes a difference in how you feel.

10 Providing Communion to the Homebound Providing Holy Communion to the homebound is a very important ministry of our parish and is in need of volunteers. This ministry demonstrates our faith in the resurrection, and our belief in the real presence of Christ, and love for your parish community. The layperson who distributes communion is an Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister (EEM). In this ministry the minister provides the Word of God and the consecrated host as an extension of the liturgy of the Mass and the service of the bishop or priest, the Ordinary Minister. For the sick, the reception of communion is not only a privilege but also a sign of support and concern by the Christian community for its members who are ill. (Pastoral Care of the Sick, 2007). It is important to have these special items for taking communion to the homebound that are provided by the Care Ministry Coordinator, Barbara Dunlap. They are: Communion of the Sick Book Pyx Burse Purificator Ideally the consecrated host should be taken directly from Mass to the homebound. If you attend Mass, do not get the consecrated Host from the Tabernacle before attending Mass. It is important to get the host after you have received communion. Have your pyx open and mention to the minister how many hosts you need. Place the pyx in your burse to be carried around your neck. If you do not attend Mass you may to to the Tabernacle and get the consecrated host then go directly to the homebound. If you are providing communion to a family member andhave not been in touch with the office, or it you know of someone who may need to have home communion visits, lease call the church office and talk with Barbara Dunlap. This is imortant for all who would like to take communion to anyone who is not able to attend Mass whether it is in your home or a facility and even if it is only for a week or two. The carryng of the Precious Body of Christ must be done with the utmost reverence.
