Please call Pat at the Parish office. A personal invitation from Jesus! Eucharist Ministers & Lectors: St. John s is in great need of more ministers to help at Mass. The 5:30pm Saturday Vigil Mass has the greatest need but there is also the need at other Masses. You are invited to do some soul searching and hopefully be moved to call Pat at the parish office to sign up for this training class. The Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to a full, conscious and active participation in the liturgy. Such participation by the people as a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a redeemed people (1 Peter 2-9) is their right and duty by reason of their baptism. Being fully engaged in the liturgy involves more than being present at the liturgy. It requires offering one s entire self to the service of worship. The critical question we must ask our self is What do I give to the liturgy? How is my self-offering a sign of worship?

5 Planting a Mary Garden A down-to-earth devotion! Mary Gardens were a common sight for 1500 years (until the Reformation). This Fiesta will bring SJB school families, parish members, and the community together to celebrate the Mexican-American holiday, while showcasing the spirit of SJB and generating funds to support our school. Come out for a fun afternoon of family-friendly carnival games, live Mariachi music, and free entertainment. Kids will enjoy a cake-walk, bouncy-house and taking a swing at their favorite piñata. 6 Liturgy Corner Confirmation Thursday, May 15 th at 7pm with Archbishop Sample. We have 34 students receiving the sacrament of Confirmation Thursday. Please join them at this beautiful liturgy as they complete their sacraments of initiation. A question I am often asked is why children receive the sacraments of initiation in a different order than those coming into the Church at the Easter Vigil. Since the reinstatement of the catechumenate the church has recovered the original theology of confirmation as an initiation sacrament. It is a sacrament of beginning. Adult catechumens are initiated in the same way the original catechumens were in the beginning centuries of the church: baptism, confirmation and first communion are received in the same ceremony at the Easter Vigil. These three sacraments are celebrated in such a way that they seem as one. In the early church, even infants were initiated in this way. However, in the fifth century, two things happened to cause the initiation sacraments to break apart. First, the church began to develop a theology of original sin, which soon led to infants being baptized as soon as possible after birth. Secondly, the church was growing as such a pace that bishops could no longer be at the baptisms of all these infants. To maintain some connection with initiation, the bishops required that they themselves be the ministers of confirmation. Later the church legislated that baptized children be confirmed at least by the age of reason or about seven years of age. In the late Middle Ages, the law evolved so that children could not be confirmed before the age of reason. That is our current law today. Another factor in this development is that communion began to be seen as something too important and too special for a 7 year old to understand. Communion began to be delayed later until the child was considered mature enough to receive the sacrament. So from the 17 th century until early in the 20 th century a typical initiation process would be for a child to be baptized as an infant, confirmed in early grade school and receive first communion in early adolescence.. In 1910, Pope Pius X wanted to encourage Catholics to share in communion regularly. To make this happen he removed the maturity aura from communion and lowered the age of first communion to the age of reason. Thus the change in the order of receiving the sacraments for children; baptism as an infant, first communion at the age of reason and confirmation early adolescence. Will begin September 11 th and run through March 19 th with breaks for Thanksgiving and Christmas. One session will be held on Thursday evenings and a daytime session, if enough participation, will be offer during the day on Wednesday. Do not let the 24 weeks deter you from attending, as the sessions are easily to make up. Thank you to the several who have already registered for this class. I welcome others to commit themselves to diving deeper into the Scripture. You will learn how the key people, places, and events in the Bible fit together to reveal God s Plan for humanity. If you need to receive the Blessed Eucharist with this low gluten host please follow these procedures at Mass. At communion time arrange yourself to be the last person in the priest line. When it is your turn to receive tell the priest you need a low gluten host and he will go to the tabernacle to get you one and then give you communion. Parishioner News Ralph Rigdon: A Huge THANK YOU!! for 60 years of ministry to the music department of Saint John's, and congratulation on your retirement. Ralph plays the organ, in recent years at the 7:30am Mass and on Fridays of Lent playing for stations of the cross. Cards may be sent to him at the home address as listed in the parish directory. Fellow parishioner Marie Kalibak died April 28 th. There was no funeral service. She has been a parishioner since May 2000.

Sirach; 30: 22 Blood Pressure Screening will be available on Sunday, May 20th, 2014 after the 7:30am and 10:00 am, and Noon Mass. High blood pressure is called the silent killer. This is because many people who have it don t know it. Normal blood pressure is less than 120/80. Know your blood pressure and remember to check it regularly. Doing so can save your life. Here are some things you can do to help control your blood pressure. Choose heart healthy foods, Maintain a healthy weight, Get up and get active, Manage stress, Limit alcohol and quit smoking.
