After the 6:00 p.m. High Mass a Eucharistic Holy Hour of Reparation to the Sacred Heart will be held followed by Benediction. Also, Fr. Miara will renew the consecration of the parish and all of our parishioners to the Sacred Heart, which was solemnly done last year. Please plan on attending with your families begging almighty God for a great outpouring of graces upon us as we take refuge in this Heart which has loved men so much! FATHER S DAY NOVENA OF MASSES A nine day novena of Holy Masses for all fathers, grandfathers, godfathers and spiritual fathers will take place at Holy Innocents beginning on Father s Day, Sunday, June 17, and ending on June 25. Envelopes for this purpose are located throughout the church. Please return the envelope with the names of all those you wish to remember in this special series of Masses to the rectory, collection basket, or any of the offering boxes in the church before Father s Day so they can be placed on the altar. 3 FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI Today is the External Solemnity of Corpus Christi. As per the indult given in the USA on November 25, 1885 under Pope Leo XIII, the Mass of Corpus Christi with the Eucharistic Procession will be celebrated today following the 10:30 a.m. High Mass. PILGRIM IMAGE OF ST. PEREGRINE In conjunction with the National Shrine of St. Peregrine at the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows in Chicago, Holy Innocents has a small pilgrim image of the Cancer Saint to travel to the homes of our parishioners who suffer from cancer or other serious life-threatening illnesses such as AIDS, their loved ones, caregivers and health care providers. If you would like to welcome this special image to your home for a week or more of prayer, please contact the parish office. Included with the image are prayer cards and leaflets as well as petition slips which you can mail to the Shrine in Chicago. MODESTY IN DRESS Now that the warm weather is upon us, out of respect for Our Lord and for the edification of our neighbors, we ask that men and women, boys and girls appear in church modestly and respectfully dressed. Shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, halter tops, bare midriffs, strapless, off-the-shoulder, backless or low-cut dresses/tops or tight fitting clothes, beachwear do not fit the norm of Christian modesty or respect. Do not be an occasion of sin for someone else! Your cooperation is evidence of your love for Our Lord and for His Most Holy Mother and is greatly appreciated. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Volunteers are needed to lead the Divine Mercy Chaplet Monday through Friday at 3:00 p.m. If anyone is interested, please call the Parish Office. VOTIVE MASS OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT On the seven days following the Feast of Corpus Christi, a 2 nd class votive Mass of the Blessed Sacrament may be celebrated followed by a Eucharistic procession. This option will be done here at Holy Innocents on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (June 4-6) at the 6:00 p.m. Mass, which will be offered Coram Sanctissimo (in the presence of the exposed Blessed Sacrament). PLEASE NOTE WELL: for this week only, due to the Eucharistic procession, the Wednesday Novena in honor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help will be prayed in its abbreviated version at 5:50 p.m. and not after the Mass as is usually done. 4 REFLECTION FROM CATHERINE DOHERTY JUNE - Month of the Sacred Heart Quotes from St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Nothing unites us so closely to the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ as the cross which is the most precious pledge of His love. I need nothing but God, and to lose myself in the Heart of Jesus. This divine heart is an abyss filled with all blessings, and into the poor should submerge all their needs. It is an abyss of joy in which all of us can immerse our sorrows. It is an abyss of lowliness to counteract our foolishness, an abyss of mercy for the wretched, an abyss of love to meet our every need. One cannot love without suffering. PRAISES OF MARY Oh, if Mary were but known, how much more wonderful would be our faith, and how different would our Communion be! - Fr. F.W. Faber The hidden protagonist in the meeting between the young Mary and the by-then elderly Elizabeth is Jesus. For you have, in absolute truth, brought forth God! - St. Sophronius The Little Word But But is a strange little word. It is small but powerful, and can be used to break the family spirit of charity. This is especially true when it is used, not always deliberately but at least semideliberately, to undermine morale. It also undermines authority. Let s take an example. Someone begins the conversation, That was a good meeting and so-and-so was really terrific, but And with a few sentences, the person sows in the minds of others doubts, hostilities, tensions, anxiety, and a host of questions that needn t have arisen. That is how a little word of three letters can smash the family spirit of charity in two minutes. It can do more than that. Someone is giving a task to do. Listen to the response: But look, I have to do this or But I haven t finished this or, But one moment, don t you think it would be better to do it this way? But but but There are so many buts in our conversation that it almost makes me cry! The little word but is the very soul of argumentativeness and rationalization. Used in this way, it is better left out of your conversation. You can bring it in when someone praises you; then you can say, But you don t know me I m not as good as all that. 5 FEAST OF OUR LADY, MOTHER OF GRACE June 9th Among the many miraculous images of the Mother of God through which she deigns to grant her favors, there is one in the monastery church of the Carmelites in Vienna, entitled the Mother of Grace, or Our Lady of Grace, also known also as Our Lady of the Bowed Head. In 1610 a Carmelite, Dominic of Jesus-Mary, found among the votaries of an old altar in the monastery church of Maria della Scala in Rome and oil painting of the Mother of God, dust-covered and somewhat torn, which grieved him. Taking it into his hands, he shook the dust off it, and kneeling down venerated it with great devotion. He had the picture renovated and placed it on the shelf in his cell, where he made it the object of his love and supplications in favor of those who came to him in their necessities and afflictions. One night while he was praying fervently before the picture, he noticed that some dust had settled on it. Having nothing but his course woolen handkerchief he dusted it with that and apologized, O pure and holiest Virgin, nothing in the whole world is worthy of touching your holy face but since I have nothing but this coarse handkerchief, deign to accept my good will. To his great surprise, the face of the Mother of God appeared to take on life and smiling sweetly at him, she bowed her head, which thereafter remained inclined. Fearing he was under an illusion, Dominic became troubled but Mary assured him that his requests would be heard: he could ask of her with full confidence any favor he might desire. He fell upon his knees and offered himself entirely to the service of Jesus and Mary and asked for the deliverance of one of is benefactor s souls in purgatory. Mary told him to offer several Masses and other good works; a short time after when he was again praying before the image, Mary appeared to him bearing the soul of his benefactor to Heaven. Dominic begged that all who venerated Mary in this image of Our Lady of Grace might obtain all they requested. In reply the Virgin gave him this assurance: All those who devoutly venerate me in this picture and take refuge to me will have their request granted and I will obtain for them many graces; but especially will I hear their prayers for the relief and deliverance of the souls in purgatory. Dominic soon after placed the image into the church of Maria Della Scala so that more devotees of Mary could venerate it. Many wonderful favors were obtained by those who honoured and invoked Mary here. Reproductions were made of Our Lady of Grace and sent to different parts of the world. After the death of Dominic the original painting was lent to Prince Maximilian of Bavaria. He gave it to the discalced Carmelites in Munich in 1631; they gave it to Emperor Ferdinand II of Austria and his wife Eleanore. After Ferdinand s death, Eleanore entered the Carmelite convent in Vienna and took the picture with her. During the succeeding years the image was transferred to various places. Today it is in the monastery church of Vienna Doabling. On 27 September 1931, it was solemnly crowned by Pope Pius XI its 300th anniversary of arrival in Vienna. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here. We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.
