4 SHRINE OF ST. ANNE-DE-BEAUPRE The Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, located only 20 minutes outside of Québec City, is the second oldest pilgrimage site in North America. Dedicated to Saint Anne, the grandmother of Jesus Christ, the shrine welcomes nearly one million visitors annually from all around the world. Through the splendour of a sacred site that is rich with 350 years of history, the Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré is the epitome of the Christian people s faith and the welcome of all races, beliefs and conditions. Discover the shrine s extraordinary history through its paintings, mosaics, stained-glass windows, and stone and wooden sculptures, and learn about the role it continues to play in our people s faith. The Basilica is a shrine dedicated to Saint Anne. Even if we know very little about the life of Saint Anne, the simple fact of being the mother of Mary and the grandmother of Jesus is sufficient for the Church to recognize and venerate her for centuries. The entire ceiling mosaic of the Basilica describes the life of Saint Anne. It tells the story of her life, the life of a Jewish woman in that era. It speaks of her virtues and glorification. The shrine has in its possession three notable relics. The first relic (a portion of the bone of Saint Anne's finger) was obtained by the Carcassonne Chapter and brought to the shrine on March 12, 1670 by Bishop François de Laval. The first major relic arrived at the shrine on July 26, 1892, as a gift from Pope Leo XIII. It is a 4-inch portion of the bone of Saint Anne's forearm. It was obtained from the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, in Rome, and was brought to Saint-Anne-de-Beaupré by Bishop Joseph-Calixte Canac-Marquis ( ). Finally, on July 3, 1960, another major relic of Saint Anne (also from her forearm) was brought to the shrine from the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls; this time, it was a gift from Blessed Pope John XXIII. The Basilica was built in Romanesque Revival style and in the shape of a cross. It stands 100 meters high, from the floor up to the top of the bell towers. It is approximately 60 meters wide at the transept crossing and 50 meters at the façade. The building spans about 100 meters in length. The tympanic, the bas-relief of the façade, shows Saint Anne in all her glory. At her feet and on either side is a long frieze that shows important moments in the history of our devotion, which represents the entire history of Québec s society. Just above the tympanic, the Angel of the Pilgrim watches over the thousands of faithful followers who come to visit Saint Anne each year. Above, the 12 Apostles surround the large rose window. Finally, several statues decorate the façade, including Mary, Joachim, John the Baptist, Bishop François de Laval and Mary of the Incarnation all masterpieces of the Québec sculptor, Émile Brunet. The main doors of the Basilica, created by the artist Albert Gilles, are hand-made of copper and present the many scenes of the life of Jesus. At the pinnacle, between the two bell towers, you can find the statue of Saint Anne, which was saved from the destructive fire of the first Basilica in HISTORY 1658: First chapel During the construction of the chapel, a healing occurred. Louis Guimont was miraculously healed from his excruciating back pain. This is the first of many testimonials of healings and favors obtained : Second church Built out of stone and wood, the second church was erected more to the east, where the old cemetery is now located : Third church This stone church was used for worship for over two centuries. It was demolished in The commemorative chapel was constructed on the foundations of its transept : First Basilica In 1876, Saint Anne is proclaimed the patron saint of Québec. A fourth church was opened for worship. On March 29, 1922, a fire tragically destroyed the Basilica to today: After the fire, construction began for the present-day Basilica. The architecture was inspired by splendid Roman -style cathedrals. Cardinal Maurice Roy consecrated the Basilica on July 4, St. Anne statues, chaplets, medals, holy cards & Oil from Beaupre are available in the Gift Shop in the Parish Office

5 REFLECTION FROM CATHERINE DOHERTY We Are the Dispossessed I am, as most of my friends know, a fool for Christ s sake, and also one of the humiliate which means the dispossessed, the forgotten, the unrecognized, the rejected. Would you like to meet the humiliate? Go to an old people s home, where thousands of mothers and fathers are forgotten, unvisited, uncared for. It is not difficult to do that. And it is not difficult to be a fool for Christ s sake and to try to penetrate the seemingly impenetrable greed and selfishness of such places. Do you have the courage to go into racially mixed neighborhoods or the neighborhoods of the poor? Yes, it takes courage to go there. Not because you are going to see the poverty that perhaps you have read about in the papers or in a book. It takes courage to enter. It takes courage to knock at the door. Who am I, who are you, that we dare to enter the Holy of Holies that Christ loved so much? He was always with the poor. Yes, it takes courage to go there. But a fool for Christ s sake can go anywhere, because people will laugh at him and will let him in. That is the joy of being a fool for Christ s sake, and one of the humiliate, one of the despised, forgotten, neglected. When traveling and preparing trips and vacations, do not forget to find the local church where you will be staying and attend Holy Mass there. Much effort is put into finding the perfect hotel, restaurants and recreational activities. How much effort is put into finding a church? Remember, it is a mortal sin to miss Holy Mass on a Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation and traveling does not dispense one from the Sunday Mass obligation! MODESTY IN DRESS Now that the warm weather is upon us, out of respect for Our Lord and for the edification of our neighbors, we ask that men and women, boys and girls appear in church modestly and respectfully dressed. Shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, halter tops, bare midriffs, strapless, off-the-shoulder, backless or low-cut dresses/tops or tight fitting clothes, beachwear do not fit the norm of Christian modesty or respect. 6 The Shrine to the Unborn Blessed by Cardinal O Connor on December 28, 1993 Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here. We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City. SUBWAY ROSARY The Shrine is dedicated in Memory of the Children Who Have Died Unborn We invite you to name your child(ren) and provide the opportunity to have your babyʹs name inscribed in our Book of Lifeʺ. Our Regina Mundi Praesidium of the Legion of Mary conducts a Subway Rosary on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. All are invited to join in this evangelization effort to spread devotion to Our Lady. Anyone interested in joining is asked to gather at Holy Innocents by 10:00 a.m. The group will then proceed to either Herald Square, Duffy Square, or a subway station for the recitation of the 20 decades of the Holy Rosary and return back to Holy Innocents around 12:30 p.m. Come for all or part of the Subway Rosary!
