Above all the grace and the gifts that Christ gives to His beloved is that of overcoming self - St. Francis of Assisi ANNOUNCING THE 2018 PUBLIC SQUARE ROSARY CRUSADE The world is at a historic crossroad. God is more offended than ever as people ignore Our Lady s maternal request to stop offending God. Yes, we must listen to Our Lady s request and stop sinning if we hope to enjoy God s blessings and to avert His wrath. He will hear us, if we pray through the intercession of His Blessed Mother. That s why we here at Holy Innocents will join with countless others throughout the Country in the 2018 Public Square Rosary Crusade. In The Secret of the Rosary, Saint Louis de Montfort said: Public prayer is far more powerful than private prayer to appease the anger of God and call down His mercy, and Holy Mother Church, guided by the Holy Ghost, has always advocated public prayer in times of public tragedy and suffering. This will take place on Saturday, October 13 at 12 noon at Herald Square in front of Macy s. BUS PILGRIMAGE TO DOYLESTOWN On Saturday, October 20, Holy Innocents will host a bus trip to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, Pennsylvania leaving from in front of the church at 8:00 a.m. sharp. We will have a tour of the Shrine, Holy Mass and Devotions to Our Lady of Czestochowa, time for personal prayer and shopping in the Gift Shop and Bookstore, and an outdoor Rosary Procession before heading to Peddlers Village for two hours of shopping in their quaint shops. Approximate time of arrival back to Holy Innocents is 8:00 p.m. The cost is $55 per person and includes a hot lunch. For more information and to make a reservation please contact the Parish Office. 4 NATIONAL PRAYER CAMPAIGN TO END ABORTION Each Friday, August 3 September 28, answer the U.S. bishops call to education, fasting, and prayer for the legal protection of human life. Join at Pro-life laws can and do reduce the abortion rate Most people on both sides of the abortion debate agree that reducing the number of abortions is a desirable outcome. While some argue that contraception is the key to reducing the abortion rate, real-world evidence does not back that up. Instead, research shows that even when women were provided with free emergency contraception ahead of time, the pregnancy and abortion rate remained statistically equivalent with those who were not provided with it. i In fact, the availability of contraception and abortion can increase the rate of unintended pregnancies (as well as sexually transmitted infections) as studies show that people engage in more frequent and riskier behavior if they believe their risk has been lowered. ii On the other hand, evidence suggests that laws restricting the funding of abortion (like the Hyde amendment preventing Medicaid funds from going to abortion) or limiting its availability, involving parents, and providing women with more information lower the rate of abortion. iii Unfortunately, Roe, its companion case Doe, and some subsequent rulings have been used to invalidate many laws meant to lower the rate of abortion. Abortion fails women Abortion is often portrayed as essential for women to achieve freedom and equality with men, yet many report feeling some degree of pressure or aborting to please someone else often their partner. iv Further, after the abortion, many women report feelings of depression, suicidal or self-harm inclinations, sadness, shame, and regret. v For example, Cynthia Carney in an amicus brief submitted to the Supreme Court described the aftermath of her abortion saying, For 23 years, I went into crying spells, depression, suicidal thoughts. Emotionally it devastated me. Camelia Murphy explained, I have suffered with low selfesteem, self-hatred, suicidal impulses, constant anxiety (especially about sex and about making decisions). Donna Razin said that her abortion caused her [d]eep regret initially I was suicidal as the years have progressed I have developed a heightened level of bitterness and anger and self-hate. vi Women would be better served if society tried to creatively answer the needs of single mothers, mothers trying to get through school, mothers needing higher or more stable finances, etc. rather than telling them that the death of their children is the best answer. We can and should do better for all women. Abortion stops a beating heart Abortion advocates usually refer to the human being growing in her/his mother s womb in dehumanizing terms like product of conception and suggest that most abortions are done before fetal organs are functioning. Actually, the vast majority are done after the fetal heart has begun beating. A baby s heart begins to beat at about 21 or 22 days after fertilization. vii That s at about 3 weeks of development. SECOND COLLECTION The Second collection for St. Joseph Seminary will be taken next weekend at all Masses. St. Joseph s is the major seminary of the Archdiocese of New York. 6 The Shrine to the Unborn Blessed by Cardinal O Connor on December 28, 1993 Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here. We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City. SUBWAY ROSARY The Shrine is dedicated in Memory of the Children Who Have Died Unborn We invite you to name your child(ren) and provide the opportunity to have your babyʹs name inscribed in our Book of Lifeʺ. RCIA is a process, rooted in Church history, which is designed to educate in the Catholic faith and prepare adults to receive the Sacraments of the Church. It seeks, however, to do more than simply give interested persons information. Becoming Catholic involves entering into relationship with Jesus Christ and His community of God s people. If you are already Catholic and would like to gain knowledge about your faith and grow in a deeper relationship with God, you are also welcome to join the RCIA Program.
