More commonly, John is known as the "precursor" of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John's basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John's legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: "You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory" (Isaiah 49:3). PEREGRINE In conjunction with the National Shrine of St. Peregrine at the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows in Chicago, Holy Innocents has a small pilgrim image of the Cancer Saint to travel to the homes of our parishioners who suffer from cancer or other serious lifethreatening illnesses such as AIDS, their loved ones, caregivers and health care providers. If you would like to welcome this special image to your home for a week or more of prayer, please contact the parish office. 4 Mother Therese of Jesus, O. Carm. MOTHER THERESE, known in the world as Anna Marie Lindenberg, was born of Joseph and Marianna Lindenberg, in Muenster, Westphalia, on May 20, 1877, the youngest of four children. Four days later, on May 24, she was brought to the Cathedral of Muenster for baptism. At eight years of age, she accompanied her mother to the Convent of the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity. Here she witnessed her cousin s reception into the Congregation of the Good Shepherd Sisters. The Clothing Ceremony made a deep impression on the little girl and from that moment she conceived an ardent desire to give herself as a consecrated bride to the Saviour Anna Marie was an excellent pupil. Even at an early age, she possessed an extraordinary skill for memorizing. And we would like to mention here that after fifty years or more, she could recite with ease a very long poem which she had been called upon to deliver before the Emperor of Germany upon his visit to her childhood school. After her arrival in the United States, she lost no time in learning the English Language, and, remarkable to relate, in a very short time, she could write and speak it fluently. She entered Carmel on the Feast of Saint Teresa of Avila, October 15, 1913, taking the name of Sister Therese of Jesus. On May 6, 1914, the feast of Saint John before the Latin Gate, she had the ineffable joy of receiving the Holy Habit of Carmel from Bishop of the diocese. About a year later, on July 16, 1915, the Feast of the Incomparable Patroness of the Order, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Sister Therese of Jesus was permitted to pronounce her Holy Vows. In the Divine Plan, however, it was the zealous General of the Carmelites, the Most Reverend Father Elias P. Magennis, O. Carm., who was destined to undertake the leadership in the vast enterprise of expanding the vine of the Carmelite nuns of the Ancient Observance to the West. It was on October 15, 1930, the feast of the seraphic virgin of Carmel, Saint Teresa of Avila, that permission was granted by the Sacred Congregation of Religious, whereby the Reverend Mother Therese of Jesus and Sister Clement Mary of the Guardian Angel were canonically commissioned to found a Calced Carmelite Monastery of Papal Enclosure in America. On May 22, 1931, the two Carmelites motored to Allentown. Even at this crucial point, Mother Therese s humor was at hand, and she remarked to her dear companion, that it was quite fitting that an undertaker, from Allentown, should have the pleasure of bringing the Sisters to their new home. On Easter Tuesday morning, April 11, 1939, at about ten-fifteen o clock, barely three hours after Mother s reception of Holy Communion during the conventual Mass, a heart attack broke the frail ties that bound to earth this zealous spouse of the Most Blessed Trinity. Her death was hastened, perhaps, by her untiring zeal in the holy service of her Lord and Master, Whose greater honor and glory were the mainspring of her entire spiritual life. Loving hands placed the dear body in the casket prepared for her, and she lay in state, behind the cloister grille, in the Monastery choir, facing the Main Altar. Hundreds of friends and benefactors, men, women, children, priests, and religious, filed past the grille window to pay a last farewell to Mother Therese. Without any ado, those who knew her during life, were inspired to pass through the grating rosaries, crosses, medals, pictures, and other items, to be touched to her venerable body, that they might be kept by them as precious souvenirs. The body of Mother Therese was exhumed in 2001 and found to be intact, 63 years after her burial. Her body was them moved to a marble tomb at the Monastery. Mother Therese of Jesus, pray for us! Quite a few people say, oh yes, the Sacred Heart used to be associated with devotions of the nine First Fridays, and so on. They are a little hazy about it. Just let your mind drift; let it enter the mystery of Christ s heart. You will find a strange, incredible heart that God accepted when he became human, a heart that beats forever, in a manner of speaking. When Christ s heart was pierced, the Church was born. The Church, reviled by so many,. Yet where the Church is, He is. And with her, Christ stands; and His heart comforts and cures the Church. He stands there like a beggar, begging the pennies of our love. How many pennies have we put in today? Yesterday? He is a beggar for our love and solace. His beating heart spells love for us! That is why on certain days we bow low and thank God for His faithfulness toward us. And the humble little girl who became the Mother of God Mary-we know that she is the Mother of humility, simple, and still. As He lay in her womb and His heart began to beat, she was the first to hear it. And her heart answered His. So we have before us a mystery the heart of Mary and the Heart of Christ both immaculate, both of beauty unsurpassed. What more could you desire, except to give yourself totally to these two hearts, especially the one of God! Who is featured in this week s issue of the parish bulletin may do so by obtaining a copy of her Biography, which was written by a Sister of the Community and available in the Gift Shop in the Parish Office. The cost of the book is $10.00, plus tax. The book is now out of print and there are only limited quantities available. It is softcover, 217 pages, and includes many of the early foundation photos. 6 The Shrine to the Unborn Blessed by Cardinal O Connor on December 28, 1993 Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here. We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City. SUBWAY ROSARY The Shrine is dedicated in Memory of the Children Who Have Died Unborn We invite you to name your child(ren) and provide the opportunity to have your babyʹs name inscribed in our Book of Lifeʺ. Our Regina Mundi Praesidium of the Legion of Mary conducts a Subway Rosary on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. All are invited to join in this evangelization effort to spread devotion to Our Lady. Anyone interested in joining is asked to gather at Holy Innocents by 10:00 a.m. The group will then proceed to either Herald Square, Duffy Square, or a subway station for the recitation of the 20 decades of the Holy Rosary and return back to Holy Innocents around 12:30 p.m. Come for all or part of the Subway Rosary!
