INDULGENCES FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY November is dedicated to the Holy Souls in Purgatory. From November 1-8 (inclusive), a plenary indulgence (under the usual conditions of Confession within 8 days, the reception of Holy Communion, no attachment to even venial sin, and prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father), applicable only to the Poor Souls, may be granted when the faithful visit a cemetery and pray (even mentally) for the faithful departed. A plenary indulgence (applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory) may be obtained by the faithful who visit any parish church or public oratory and there recite one Our Father and one Apostles Creed. Partial indulgences for the Poor Souls may be obtained by those who say the prayer Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domini, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Requiescant in pace ( Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace ). CHARITY FOR THE DECEASED There are a number of different pamphlets in the vestibule on praying for the dead, such as information on Gregorian Masses and teaching kids how to pray for the Poor Souls. ALL-NIGHT VIGIL Friday of this week, November 3, is the First Friday of the month. The All-night Vigil of Prayer and Reparation will take place following the 6:00 p.m. High Mass beginning with the devotion of the Way of the Cross and concluding on Saturday morning with a 5:00 a.m. Low Tridentine Latin Mass. FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTIONS Saturday of this week, November 4, is the First Saturday of the month. Devotions of reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary will take place following the 1:00 p.m. Mass consisting of the recitation of the Holy Rosary, a guided 15-minute meditation on the mysteries of the Rosary, and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. This is the final month of the Jubilee Year of the Fatima Apparitions. If you have not done so already, make a resolution to begin the Five First Saturdays this month! JUBILEE OF FATIMA OCTOBER - Month of the Holy Rosary Blanche of Castille, Queen of France, was deeply grieved because twelve years after her marriage she was still childless. When Saint Dominic went to see her he advised her to say her rosary every day to ask God for the grace of motherhood, and she faithfully carried out his advice. In 1213 she gave birth to her eldest child, Philip, but the child died in infancy. The Queen s fervor was nowise dulled by this disappointment; on the contrary, she sought Our Lady s help more than ever before. She had a large number of rosaries given out to all members of the court and also to people in several cities of the kingdom, asking them to join her in entreating God for a blessing that this time would be complete. VENERABLE SERVANT OF GOD CASIMIR WYSZYNSKI Father Casimir served the Lord with great zeal as a Marian and was respected and recognized among his contemporaries as well. He is credited with expanding and strengthening the Marian Order during the first half of the 18 th century. It was under his leadership that the Marians established new foundations in Lithuania and neighboring countries, as well as in Portugal. It was thanks to Fr. Casimir Wyszynski s efforts that the Marians became truly international in membership, attracting not only Poles and Lithuanians, but Ruthenians, Portuguese, Czechs, Hungarians, French, and Italians. It can be said that under Fr. Casimir s leadership, the charism of the Order, at first envisioned by St. Stanislaus Papczynski, began to be fully realized. The Marians began to be clearly recognized as an Order which honored the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and prayed for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Two priorities stood out during Fr. Casimir s generalship: the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in salvation history and the charisms of the Marian founder, St. Stanislaus. Fr. Casimir s close affinity with the spirit of the founder fired his own work and inspired the dynamic expansion of the Order during the 18 th century. Burning with missionary zeal, Fr. Casimir himself went to Portugal and personally established the first Marian monastery for the Iberian Peninsula on Mount Balsamo. It is there that he died in Two centuries later, in December of 1989, Pope John Paul II signed the document marking the first step in the process leading to an official declaration of sainthood, the Decree of Heroic Virtues for Fr. Casimir Wyszynski. Thus, he now bears the title Venerable Servant of God.
