3 CATHOLIC CHURCH S TEACHING ON CHASTITY & HOMOSEXUALITY From the Catechism of the Catholic Church: 2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity (Cf. Gen 19:1-29; Rom 1:24-27; 1 Cor 6:9-10; 1 Tim 1:10), tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered." (CDF, Persona humana 8) They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection. In the vestibule are brochures in both English and Spanish explaining Courage and EnCourage, two groups in line with the teaching of the Church regarding homosexuality, as well as an insert in today s bulletin. Please take them and familiarize yourselves with them, especially those with samesex attraction and their families and friends who wish to help them live lives in conformity with the teachings of Christ. The writings and teachings of Fr. James Martin, S. J. on this subject as well as the groups Dignity, Equally Blessed and New Ways Ministry are not in line with the teachings of the Catholic Church and should not be adhered to nor supported in any way if one wishes to be a faithful Catholic in good standing! The confusion spread by these groups and individuals is from the devil, the father of lies. If one goes on the New Ways Ministry website ( you can see that their agenda is contrary to the teaching of the Church. You can also read a list of so-called gay-friendly churches in the Archdiocese of New York, particularly in Manhattan, which do not help LGBT individuals live chastely but who in a false sense of compassion and acceptance facilitate their carrying on a sinful lifestyle. Holy Innocents is a true gay-friendly church in that it upholds the magisterial teachings of the Holy Roman Catholic Church outside of which there is no salvation, and desires that all carrying the heavy cross of same-sex attraction will bear it toward their sanctification in a heroic way by not flaunting or living out a sinful lifestyle. The inspired teaching of St. Paul in the above mentioned scripture passage of 1 Cor 6:9-10 that men who practice homosexuality will not inherit the kingdom of God and Canon 1752 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law which states that the salvation of souls must always be the supreme law of the Church prompts me to address this so there be no confusion in what the true Church of Christ teaches. The salvation of souls is at stake. Letting this be known is true compassion and love. Fr. Miara SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND There will be a second collection next weekend for the Peter s Pence Collection which was started centuries ago to provide financial support for the Pope and has evolved to fund the Holy See s charitable actions for those in need. PRAYER TO ACHIEVE INNER PEACE Gracious Father, today I am not at peace. I need you, O Lord, to help me experience true internal peace in my life. In your hands, I place my heart, my life and my soul. Accept them as an offering that is pleasing to your eyes. Through Christ our Lord, Amen Lord, grant that we may die for love of your love, as you died for love of our love. - St. Francis of Assisi COLLECTION REPORT Regular Collection 01/28/18 $4, Shrines and Candles $2, Regular Collection - 01/29/17 $3, Shrines and Candles $3, Your continued and generous support to your Parish is greatly appreciated!

4 Made for Love by Fr. Michael Schmitz HOLY INNOCENTS BOOKSHELF In Made for Love, Fr. Michael Schmitz presents the Catholic teaching on same-sex attractions and samesex sexual relations. He begins by giving background information regarding the different worldviews of the human person, the philosophical idea of nature and purpose, the difference between objective and subjective truth, the principal of non -contradiction, and the fallen human nature that resulted from original Sin. He then discusses in great detail the nature and ends of human sexuality and the nature of true love, while, in a compassionate and non-judgmental way, explaining the flawed nature of same-sex sexual relations. While this book is intended primarily for those who have same-sex attraction and their family and friends, its presentation of the compassionate truth of Catholic teaching on same-sex attraction will be of great benefit to everyone in today s society. The Truth About Homosexuality: The Cry of the Faithful by Fr. John Harvey, O. S. F. S. This book addresses the complex moral and pastoral questions involved in both homosexual orientation and activity, including an analysis of lifestyles in accord with the Christian Gospel, and those running counter to the Christian perception. Fr. Harvey, a pioneer in the pastoral care of homosexual persons through his organization Courage, gives a comprehensive view of the issues involved in homosexuality. This book explodes two popular myths, namely, that the homosexual condition is due primarily to genetic factors; and that, once one realizes he has a homosexual orientation, he should resign himself to this condition forever. Harvey shows that many reputable therapists have provided empirical evidence that people with a homosexual condition can have a change of orientation to the heterosexual condition. He explores various pastoral programs for homosexual persons and, with the contributions from other experts, this book provides an extensive study of the possibility of change of orientation. Why I Don t Call Myself Gay By Daniel C. Mattson Daniel Mattson once believed he was gay. Raised in a Christian family, and aware of attractions to other boys at age six, Mattson s life was marked by constant turmoil between his faith in God and his sexual attractions. Finding the conflict between his sexual desires and the teachings of his church too great, he assumed he was gay, turned his back on God, and began a relationship with another man. Yet freedom and happiness remained elusive until he discovered Christ and his true identity. In this frank memoir, Mattson chronicles his journey to and from a gay identity, finding peace in his true identity, as a man, made in the image and likeness of God. Part autobiography, part philosophy of life, and part a practical guide in living chastely, the book draws lessons from Mattson s search for inner freedom integrity, sharing wisdom from his failures and successes. His lifelong search for happiness and peace comes full circle in his realization that, above all else, what is true about him is that is a beloved son of God, loved into existence by God, created for happiness in this life and the next. Mattson s book is for anyone who has ever wondered who he is, why he is here, and, in the face of suffering, where to find joy, happiness, and the peace that surpasses all understanding. The foreword by Cardinal Robert Sarah is, as the saying goes, worth the price of the book. Making Gay Okay by Robert R. Reilly Why are Americans being forced to consider homosexual acts as morally acceptable? Why has the US Supreme Court discovered a constitutional right to same-sex marriage, which until a decade ago, was unheard of in the history of Western or any other civilization? Where has the gay rights movement come from, and how has it so easily conquered America? The answers are in the dynamics of the rationalization of sexual misbehavior. The power of rationalization-the means by which one mentally transforms wrong into right-drives they gay rights movement, gives it its revolutionary character, and makes its advocates indefatigable. The homosexual cause moved naturally from a plea for tolerance to cultural conquest because the security of its rationalization requires universal acceptance. In other words, we all must say that the bad is good. At stake in the rationalization of homosexual behavior is reality itself, which is why it will have consequences that reach far beyond the issue at hand. Already America s major institutions have been transformed-its courts, its schools, its military, its civic institutions, and even its diplomacy. The further institutionalization of homosexuality will mean the triumph of force over reason, thus undermining the very foundations of the American Republic. 5 REFLECTION FROM CATHERINE DOHERTY Temptations against Chastity Temptations against chastity are a normal part of Satan s equipment. Chastity is one virtue that he likes to destroy because it leads to purity of heart. Those who practice it to a high degree see God long before they are dead; they possess him long before their house of clay returns to the earth. Satan also attacks chastity because it is a social virtue. It brings the very breath of God of purity, beauty, innocence, childlikeness to a world surfeited with sin and sexual aberration. So naturally, Satan is going to attack your chastity. God will allow it, so that you might grow in grace and purity while fighting this temptation. Chastity is a virtue that is so social that it astounds and amazes people in every civilization and in every age. Pagans remained chaste; chastity has been a virtue respected from time immemorial. It is the reflection of God s face. So naturally Satan wants to blot it out. Take it for granted that you will have temptations against chastity. They will come on quiet feet. They will feed on loneliness and aloneness. But you will have the graces to fight them. --Catherine Doherty, Dearly Beloved Vol. 1 Taken from Grace in Every Season: Through the Year with Catherine Doherty Catherine Kolyschkine de Hueck Doherty was born on the Feast of the Assumption, 1896 into a wealthy Russian Orthodox family. She eventually converted to Catholicism and after a long spiritual journey with many personal difficulties moved to Combermere, Ontario, Canada, in There, she and her husband, Eddie Doherty, founded Madonna House. Madonna House developed as a Training Centre for lay apostles, which gradually came to include priests as well. Over the years many thousands of working guests have been inspired, set on fire, born anew and renewed in spirit through the hospitality and formation received at Madonna House, and have taken their experience home to the marketplaces in their own milieus. Among the hundreds of working guests each year, a few receive a vocational call from God and his Mother to make promises to live in poverty, chastity and obedience according to the spirit and mandate of Madonna House. For more information: or Prayer Asking for Favours Through the Intercession of Servant of God Catherine Doherty All loving Father, through your beloved Son, Jesus, we have been taught to ask for what we need. And through his spouse, our Mother the Church, we have been instructed to pray for one another, and to ask the intercession of your servants, who have fallen asleep in Christ. Therefore, through the intercession of your servant, Catherine Doherty, we ask [here mention your petition.] We ask this for your honour and glory, and in the name of Jesus Christ, your Son Our Lord. Amen. Marie Rose Ferron American Mystic, Stigmatic and Visionary ( ) (Continued from previous issue) What is even more remarkable is that thereafter she partook of no more solid food. Rose herself attested to this fact, as did also her mother. For eleven years, until her death, Rose took only liquid food and even this she was at times unable to keep. Realizing that she could receive Holy Communion, a priest once gave her some tiny unconsecrated particles. They promptly made her ill. Moreover, four years before her death, she did not even drink water during a period of three months. But Rose felt hunger and thirst, as all who dwelt in contact with her very well knew. It was at the price of long and protracted craving for food that she was able to subsist on a diet that would have been insufficient for an ordinary person. "Little Rose," had begun her role of victim without foreseeing what type of suffering was in store for her, nor what unusual signs God was to work in her martyred body. Her abstinence from food and drink was only the beginning of many extraordinary mystical phenomena and of deep suffering. Throughout it all, she remained docile to authority, both medical and spiritual, and with delicate discretion tried ever to avoid publicity. A detailed biography is not the object of this brief sketch of the life of Marie Rose Ferron. Her trials, her love for suffering, her stigmata and the content of her ecstasies and visions will be treated somewhat in detail, because they alone bring into relief her intimacy with Christ crucified. Other phenomena of her mystic life can be found in the excellent biography "She Wears a Crown of Thorns" by the Reverend O. A. Boyer. Suffice it to state here in passing that while in ecstasy she could not be lifted, even by 4 grown men, although she weighed not more than seventy-five pounds. Moreover, her body remained rigid, except when she spoke or wanted to use her hands while in conversation with Christ. 6 The Shrine to the Unborn Blessed by Cardinal O Connor on December 28, 1993 Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE".
