4 This Rosary Novena will be prayed daily at Holy Innocents beginning on the Feast of Our Lady s Assumption. The schedule is as follows: Novena for Our Nation Begins August 15! Jesus looked at them and said, With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26) For decades, we have been elevating the power of man while denying the power of God and, because of this, the devil has had a free reign of depravity and destruction. The time is now for all of us to bow to the supernatural power of God, and to the role He has given to Mary to crush the head of the serpent. Everyone is encouraged to join ranks as, united, we pray the very powerful 54 Day Rosary Novena from the Feast of the Assumption on August 15 to the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7. We are living in extraordinary times. Cardinal Burke is calling us to take extraordinary measures: "There is no question that we are living in the most troubled times. Fundamental truths about human life about marriage and the family and about the conscience are being called into question by threatening the lives of individuals and of our society. But we are full of courage because we know that our Lord is with us. He's called us to be His soldiers on the ground, working with Him for the salvation of the world. And so I invite you to be good and courageous and faithful soldiers by joining across the nation in the praying of the Holy Rosary, our most powerful prayer, on October 7. The calamities in our times merit all of these prayers and please be as generous as you possibly can in praying for the needs of our nation and of our world and of the Church as she is called by our Lord to be his Mystical Body; to be his bulwark for the truth and love of God in our world. MASS TIMES A vacation from God is never taken. When traveling and preparing trips and vacations, do not forget to find the local church where you will be staying and attend Holy Mass there. Much effort is put into finding the perfect hotel, restaurants and recreational activities. How much effort is put into finding a church? Remember, it is a mortal sin to miss Holy Mass on a Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation and traveling does not dispense one from the Sunday Mass obligation! REFLECTION FROM CATHERINE DOHERTY Blue Door Stories Someone once asked why the doors of Friendship House, and later Madonna House, are always painted blue. I answered, smilingly, Because of a very old, old saying of my people in Russia: Every front door painted blue in honor of Our Lady brings her blessings on all who pass through it. In the next few days, I want to share with you some of the many wondrous stories of God s grace and mercy and of Our Lady s tender love which have occurred in my life, and that continue to occur. Telling these little stories adventures in grace, as Raissa Maritain called them are my way of thanking the Lord for his many gifts. Many people have passed through our blue doors, each receiving, I know, Mary s blessing and her divine Son s grace and mercy. The blessings were not always visible, but when they were, they were beautiful to behold and joyful to witness. They also encouraged us and helped us to persevere in our vocation: to love God and to prove it to him by loving our neighbor and spending our life in serving him. This is the witnessing to Christ that changes the world, the extraordinary ordinariness of our daily life that passes through Our Lady s Blue Door. --Not Without Parables

5 NATIONAL PRAYER CAMPAIGN TO END ABORTION Our own Cardinal Timothy Dolan, in his role as Chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Committee on Pro-Life Activities, has launched a national prayer campaign for the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade and to pray that the next U.S. Supreme Court appointment will move our nation closer to the day when every human being is protected in law and welcomed in life. The Novena will run from Friday, August 3, to Friday, September 28. All people of good will are encouraged to fast on those Fridays and to pray one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be for the novena s intention. Participants will receive weekly or text reminders to pray and fast, along with little-known facts about Roe v. Wade to share with others. Sign up at Do You Know Roe? Roe and Doe legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy Many people don t realize that Roe v. Wade legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. Roe says abortions may not be restricted at all during the first three months and in the second three months may be regulated only for the mother s health. i After viability ii Roe allows abortion to be prohibited but iii must make an exception for the woman s life or health. But in Roe s companion case, Doe v. Bolton, the Court defined health to include all factors physical, emotional, psychological, familiar and the woman s age relevant to the well-being iv of the mother. In most states, that is broad enough to permit virtually any abortion in the seventh, eighth, or ninth months of pregnancy v vi if any of these reasons is invoked. i In the first trimester, [T]he abortion decision... must be left to the medical judgment of the pregnant woman s attending physician. In the second trimester, the State may regulate the abortion procedure in ways that are reasonably related to maternal health. Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973) at 164. ii [T]hat is, potentially able to live outside the mother s womb, albeit with artificial aid. Roe, at 160. iii After viability, the State may proscribe abortion except where it is necessary, in appropriate medical judgment, for the preservation of the life or health of the mother. Roe, at iv Doe v. Bolton, 410 U.S. 179 (1973) at 192. The Doe v. Bolton... opinion and this one, of course, are to be read together. Roe, at 165. v In Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the Court abandoned the trimester framework but reaffirmed the legality of abortion subsequent to viability for the preservation of the... health of the mother. 505 U.S. 833 (1992) at 879. vi The Supreme Court, however, has yet to be confronted with a challenge to a post-viability ban that will test Doe s breadth. Indeed, 20 states currently ban late-term abortions subject to a narrow exception for the mother s life or physical health (not for emotional, psychological, familial, or age-related reasons). Most of these laws have gone unchallenged, but they are hard to enforce even if they are constitutionally permissible. 6 The Shrine to the Unborn Blessed by Cardinal O Connor on December 28, 1993 Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here. We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.
