What are the consequences for family gatherings? What might the gathering at Christmas dinner look like if we take this message seriously? Jesus says that the normal obligations to family have to take second place to acting on his message and bringing about the kingdom of God. Living the Gospel Speaking a hard message Today s gospel reminds us that the message of Christianity is not always a popular one. Sometimes we are called upon to speak a hard message; a challenging message; a confronting message. The message of the gospel frequently confronts our popular culture and accepted social practice. It often contradicts the expedient decisions of our political leaders. There is a responsibility on us to speak the hard message of the gospel even at the risk of unpopularity and even in the face of threat. The Christian heroes of our time are those who call leaders to measure up to the demands of the gospel. Historical Context Family ties In the ancient world, and particularly in Jewish culture, family meant everything. One s identity was completely tied up with family. Families absolutely depended on one another for survival and for personal identity. Young men were identified by who their father was. Women quite literally belonged to their father or husband. The entire fabric of society and tradition was held together by extended families. For Jesus to say that his message would tear families apart was to say that all of society would be transformed by the message. The kingdom of God turns expectations and society on their head, breathing new life into tired, restrictive structures. Please continue to keep the First Communion candidates in your prayers during their preparation time. Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C Gospel: Luke 12:49-53 I have come not to give peace, but discord. Jesus said to his disciples: I have come to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were blazing already! There is a baptism I must still receive, and how great is my distress till it is over! Do you suppose that I am here to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For from now on a household of five will be divided: three against two and two against three; the father divided against the son, son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, daughter-in-law against mother-inlaw. Gospel Reflection This week s short and sharp gospel brings to mind two popular sayings (sometimes regarded as blessings, and sometimes regarded as curses). The first is fictitiously ascribed as an ancient Chinese saying, 'May you live in interesting times!' The inference of the blessing/curse is that interesting times equate to disturbing, tumultuous times or times of rapid change. Some people thrive on such change and upheaval, while others dread the thought of change. The second blessing/curse is, 'May the peace of Christ disturb you!' It occasionally turns up around Christmas or Easter and is sometimes provocatively used by those who advocate for justice and peace. The saying cuts to the heart of what Jesus says in today s gospel: the message he brings is not a cosy, complacent peace, but rather a message that confronts and challenges, even turning loved ones against each other. Jesus reminds us that if we take on his message of compassion, hospitality and table fellowship then it can set us apart from those who have not accepted the message even family members. It s a challenging message that even love and loyalty within a family can be disrupted by seeking to authentically live the model of Jesus. If we authentically place the needs of 7 Wed 24/08 Ms Mary Brooks Religious Education Leader 3/4M First Communion Parent & Child Faith Night 25/08 7pm Reflection Day 26/08 all day Sacrament of First Communion 28/08 10am CLASS NEWS Year 3/4 News Hi everyone, We have been doing many exciting things over the last two weeks. Well done to all the students who participated in our athletics training day. We had a fantastic day trying out many different types of events and discovering our hidden talents. We would like to say a big congratulations to all the children who participated in the Hoop Time round robin last Friday. They were wonderfully well behaved and competed with brilliant sportsmanship. Each team was lucky enough to come away with a win. Special thanks to all the parents that came along especially Tas and Daniela who helped with the coaching and Sonia, Helen, Rita and Julie who helped with the scoring. To the parents of those children who are participating in their First Holy Communion we would just like to remind you of the important upcoming dates: Parent/Child Faith Night -25 th of August Reflection day -26 th of August First Holy Communion - 28 th of August On the day of the Faith night you will receive an envelope for Eucharist photos. The envelope is then to be returned to the photographer on the 28 th of August (the day of the Eucharist). The price of the photos will be $50 for the value pack, $30 for the extra family photo pack and $90 for the images on CD pack. We hope you have a wonderful weekend. Rhett, Sophie and Hayley Year 5/6 News Well we ve hit the half-way mark of this term and it s full steam ahead. Since we last wrote the children experienced a lovely day with some Aboriginal artisans and thoroughly immersed themselves in the day. On Tuesday this week we had our practise athletics session for our annual athletics competition on September 7th, weather permitting. The year 6 children had the first of their 2 karate sessions last Friday and will go again this week whilst it s fresh in their minds. We will be celebrating

3 the Ben Olympics Day next Tuesday so don t forget that the children have been asked to wear Norwegian (5/6SP), Israeli (5/6T) colours or dress as an athlete for the day. The Hooptime teams have almost been finalised for the 24th August. A permission slip will be sent home next week if your child is attending. Stay well and warm Deb, Mandy and Tanya SRC Fundraiser planned for 19 th August has been POSTPONED STUDENT WELLBEING Dear Parents Our staff are continuously working on developing Social and Emotional learning through class lessons and strategies such as circle time and Meditation. How your child feels deeply affects how he/she learns and interprets the world. I would highly recommend the Kidsmatter website for information and support in helping you to help your child on their journey. Children who cope better with life s everyday setbacks develop good mental health and wellbeing. Some ways adults can support children s developing coping skills include: Optimising children s positive experiences Keep stress within a manageable everyday range. Arrange opportunities for ups that involve fun, joy, and pleasure which provide a bank of positive emotions to buffer against life s everyday downs that may involve hurt, disappointment, frustration or conflict. Helping children develop optimism Children learn by observing others. Show them how to be optimistic by your own attitude and what you say when things go wrong for you. Look for solutions and avoid blaming others or yourself. Give children opportunities to succeed. Give realistic praise and encouragement. Helping children to reframe their unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviours into helpful ones Help children turn setbacks into a drive to try again Help children to think positively. For example, "I know that puzzle was hard today, but yesterday I saw you get a hard puzzle out. You kept trying until you found the right place to put the pieces." Reconnection and repair when things go wrong When things go wrong between parents and carers and a child, the most important thing to do is to reconnect and repair the relationship. This is not only essential for the child s mental health and wellbeing but also enables them to learn to deal with relationship problems. It may not be possible to reconnect right at the time because of strong feelings, but as soon as you can, offer a hug and some words to show that you understand and accept how the child felt.
