3 NO EXCUSES The St. John Fisher ministry supporting the victims of Domestic Violence will have their next meeting on Tuesday, February 6th (7:30pm) and will plan on continuing their meetings on the first Tuesday of every month in the SJF Rectory basement. (Watch the bulletin for date announcements and other updates). The purpose of this ministry is to develop ways to support those affected by Domestic Violence and to bring the awareness of our friends and neighbors to the impact of Domestic Violence in our community. Domestic Violence calls continue to be the most frequently reported calls to the 22nd District police station. ASH WEDNESDAY AND VALENTINE S DAY This year, the largely secular celebration of Valentine s Day (February 14) coincides with Ash Wednesday and some have inquired if a dispensation from the obligations to fast and abstain from meat will be given. Catholics throughout the world recognize Ash Wednesday as the solemn beginning of a period of prayerful reflection and penance, as is evident by the large number of church goers on this day. In view of the significance of Ash Wednesday the obligation of fast and abstinence must naturally be the priority in the Catholic community, Valentine s Day can appropriately be celebrated the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which also happens to be Mardi Gras, a traditionally festive time before beginning our Lenten observance. FOR YOUR LENTEN PRAYER We have purchased a limited supply of Lenten booklets for your use at home during the upcoming Season of Lent: From the Diocese of Lansing, MI: Little Black Book. SYMBOLON The Catholic Faith Explained Symbolon offers a complete program for adult catechesis, with written text, video and DVD and clear instructions for leading groups of adult learners, all at the service of the beauty and truth given us in divine revelation as interpreted by the Church. Enright Pastor GET BEHIND THE VEST MASS AND BREAKFAST St. John Fisher Parish and School and 19th Ward Alderman Matt O Shea will host the 4th Annual Mass and Pancake Breakfast benefitting the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation s Get Behind the Vest initiative on Sunday, February 18th. All are invited to attend 10:00 Mass honoring Chicago Police Officers. Pancake Breakfast will be served in Kane Hall - 8:00am -12:00Noon. Admission is $5.00 per person or $25.00 for families. All monies raised will be donated to the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation s Get Behind the Vest Program which purchases new bullet proof vests for Chicago Police Officers. Invite your friends and neighbors to join us for Mass and then attend the pancake breakfast and support this worthwhile initiative TAX STATEMENTS Year-end contribution statements to registered parishioners who use Sunday envelopes and who have contributed a minimum of $ during the 2017 calendar year have been mailed. We ve limited the statements to those who gave that amount or more in an effort to save money on postage. However, if you contributed less than that amount and would like a statement for taxes or for your personal records, just call the rectory and we ll be happy to mail you one.
