1 HOLY TRINITY, JOHNSTOWN, NY SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: The kingdom of heaven is being continually established by a God who is amazingly patient. God exercises patience until the wheat grows enough so the weeds can be pulled without destroying the wheat. God waits patiently until the tiny seed grows into a large enough plant to welcome the birds of the sky. God patiently allows time for the yeast to work its leavening effect on the dough. God has all the patience in the world, and so must we if we are truly to be God s servants. I am patient like God when I am impatient unlike God when FROM FATHER TOM: This week, our annual Festival will be held on the grounds of the former Immaculate Conception Church on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. I am really looking forward to it. I hear there will be wonderful food -- Italian, Slovak and Irish specialties. There will be lots of games and opportunities to socialize with one another. I hope to be found in the "Religion Booth" -- new this year! I'll be there, passing out bulletins, encouraging people to stop by for a few moments, say a prayer and light a candle. I'm also happy that a local Catholic bookstore called "The Promise" will also have a booth in the Festival where religious items and books can be purchased. As well as fun and food, faith will be at the heart our gathering. I want to thank Peter O'Lucci, Garth Hillier and Bruce Heberer for the hard work they've done organizing this year's event. I also want to thank our Festival Committee which has meet often and regularly these past few months. Thanks too to all the volunteers who are getting in gear for the big event! All of the parish is grateful for your dedication and hard work. I hope to see you all at the Festival this week. I've bought a special hat for myself just for the event. You'll be able to find me a mile away! MASS INTENTIONS THIS WEEK JULY 17TH SAT. - 4:30 P.M. LARRY YERDON REQUESTED BY GEORGE & JUDY NEWNHAM SUN. - 8:00 A.M. SUN. - 10:30 A.M. MON. - 12:15 P.M. ANTHONY'S: You may have noticed the brass plaque of the Last Supper that once was displayed in St. Anthony's Church now has a new home in our Clinton Street vestibule. We have also placed the dedication plaque that hung in St. Anthony's in the vestibule as well. We have a lovely framed sketch of the church now on display in the meeting room of the Rectory. We have one additional one of St. Anthony's Church which is also available to anyone who may want it for display in their home. MEATLESS FRIDAYS RETURN IN ENGLAND: The bishops of the dioceses in England and Wales have asked Catholics there to make every Friday a special day of penance. They recently issued this statement and request: "The bishops have decided to re-establish the practice of abstaining from meat on Fridays...those who cannot or those who choose not to eat meat as part of their normal diet should abstain from some other food of which they regularly partake." So, beginning September 16, 2011 Catholics in England and Wales will once again have a common penitential practice on Fridays -- abstaining from meat. After Vatican II, this long-standing tradition in the church was not annulled but modified in this way: "The law of the (universal) Church requires Catholics to abstain from meat on Fridays, or some other form of food, or to observe some other form of penance laid down by a particular country's Bishops' Conference." Thus, Vatican II gave us a choice of penances on Fridays. Unfortunately, most Catholics dropped the idea of Friday penance completely. It seems that in England and Wales, the bishops feel that choosing one specific and traditional penance on Friday will be the best way of getting Catholics in their countries back into the habit of putting a little voluntary sacrifice back in their lives. Daily Mass is offered at 12:15 p.m. weekdays. PLEASE TURN OFF ALL CELL PHONES before Mass begins. Thank you. There should be no chewing of gum in church, especially during the celebration of the liturgy.

4 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME DO I HAVE TO GO TO MASS WHEN I AM ON VACATION? Vacations are an important part of life. They provide needed rest for body and mind. They give us a time to recharge our batteries. Freed from daily pressures, vacations give us time to play, to reassess, to enjoy nature and family, to lift our minds and hearts. It is sometimes a temptation to omit Sunday Mass while we are on vacation. Maybe we feel "God understands". But fidelity to God is as important during the summer as it is for the rest of the year. There are no vacations from the practice of our Faith. There are no vacations from honoring God as the giver of all good things -- our life, our family, our faith. When traveling, we have an obligation to inquire if, when, and where a Catholic Mass is being celebrated. If no Mass is being offered, or if the Mass is VERY distant, one would be excused from attending. However, in normal circumstances, there is usually a Catholic church nearby resorts, the seashore, even aboard cruise ships! Our Lord loves us and gave himself for our salvation. Let us give Him the best of our love and not just the leftovers. Let's be sure to get to Mass each Sunday while on vacation. May you all have a safe, pleasant and refreshing summer...and see in the wind, the quiet and the waves the voice of God telling you how much he loves you. UPDATE: Yankee Trip Thursday, August 11 TH : We were not able to fill the bus for the Yankee Trip, therefore we are sorry to have to cancel this trip. Refunds of payments will be made to those who have already paid for their seats. Life is the first gift, love is the second, and understanding is the third.-marge Piercy Whether or not I capture it by pen or computer, I am writing my life story every day. I am thinking thoughts, making decisions, and taking actions that create the story of my life. I remember Jesus encouragement : For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. (Matthew 7:8) I ask and search and knock by going to God in prayer. I want my story to be about a person of faith. So I call on the spirit of God to live through me as love, understanding, and all the other qualities of a spiritually enlivened being. In every situation, I seek divine guidance by asking, What would God do? The resounding answer I receive is this: Be a blessing. Every day is a new chapter in the story of my life.
