3 14 JUL (Monday): SAINT KATERI TEKAKWITHA, Virgin ( ) Kateri was born near the town of Auriesville, NY, the daughter of a Mohawk warrior. She converted to Christianity as a teenager, and her baptism at age 20 incurred the hostility of her tribe. She went to the new Christian colony of Indians in Canada and there lived a life dedicated to prayer, penitential practices, and care for the sick and aged. Kateri is known as the Lily of the Mohawks. She was declared venerable by the Catholic Church in 1943 and she was Beatified in Her decress of canonization was promulgated by Pope Benedict XVI in Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American to be canonized. She is the patroness of the environment and ecology. 15 JUL (Monday): SAINT BONAVENTURE, Bishop and Doctor of the Church ( ) Healed from a childhood disease by the prayers of St. Francis of Assisi. He was a friend to King Saint Louis and Saint Thomas Aquinas. At the age of 35 he was General of the Franciscan Order. Saints and Observances SOLEMNITY, FEAST, MEMORIAL OPTIONAL MEMORIAL OTHER 16 JUL (Wednesday): OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL Sacred Scripture celebrates the beauty of Carmel, where the prophet Elijah defended the purity of Israel s faith in the living God. In the 12th century, hermits withdrew to that mountain and later founded the Carmelite Order, devoted to the contemplative life under tha patronage of the Mother of God. The Carmelites celebrated a special Mass and Office in honor of Mary, and in 1726 it became a celebration of the universal Church under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. 18 JUL (Friday): SAINT CAMILLUS DE LELLIS, Priest ( ) Camillus spent his youth as a soldier, and had such a terrible gambling addiction that, to pay his debts, he took a construction job on a building belonging to the Capuchins, who converted him. He founded an order to care for the sick. In The Community NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING CLASS Our next Natural Family Planning (NFP) class will be on Saturday, 19 July This class will give an overview of the benefits of NFP, which is based on up-to-date science and is individualized for every couple. It works with the body s natural rhythm and increases respect for the couple s fertility as God designed it. NFP is an investment in your marriage which you don t want to be without. The divorce rate for couples who use NFP is lower than the average. All engaged and married couples are welcome. Couples who are to be married at Nativity are required to take this class. The class is conducted by Finola Glassmoyer, a registered nurse, who has been teaching NFP for many years. The hour-long class is held in the O Hare Center and begins at 09:00 AM. The practice of saying a novena is derived from Scripture. Upon Jesus Ascension into heaven, He told His disciples to pray together in the upper room and devote themselves to constant prayer (Acts 1:14). The Apostles, Blessed Virgin Mary, and other followers of Jesus prayed together for nine consecutive days, concluding on Pentecost. Novena prayers are considered to be especially efficacious when the novena immediately precedes the saint s feast day (begin the novena so that the ninth day is the day just prior to the feast day). DID YOU KNOW? 1. The average strawberry has about 200 seeds; it is the only fruit to bear its seeds on the outside. 2. The average pomegranate has more than 1000 seeds. 3. Some seeds are poisonous to humans, such as the peach stone, which contains cyanide. 4. The smallest seeds in the world are thought to be epiphytic orchid seeds. Roughly a billion of these seeds weigh just one gram. 5. The hardiest seeds could be those of the Arctic lupin, found in the frozen soil of northern Canada. Even though they were 10-15,000 years old, they sprouted and grew. 6. Three seeds feed most of the world rice, wheat, maize. They dry, store, can be transported and were also responsible for the evolution of farming, settlements, cities and societies. 7. Some seeds can fly sycamore, dandelion some say they gave people the idea for helicopters and parachutes. 8. Some seeds can stick the idea for Velcro came from a burdock seed. 9. Some seeds plant themselves wild oats drill themselves into the ground once watered. 10. Cotton fabric is made from the hairs on the seeds. Each hair is 3,000 times as long as it is wide. 11. Harvester ants eat more small seeds than all the mammals and birds put together. Like squirrels, they often forget where they ve put their stashes, so are responsible for planting a third of all herbaceous growth. 12. The oldest viable seed to have grown into a plant was a date palm seed estimated to be 2,000 years old (making it the only surviving contemporary of Jesus). It was discovered in 1963 when Herod the Great s fortress of Masada near the Dead Sea was excavated. It was planted in 2005 and now Methuselah, as the plant is called, stands over 4 feet high. Botanists believe the seed had managed to remain viable for so long because the Dead Sea area s climate is exceptionally dry and stable.
