3 28 OCT (Tuesday) SAINTS SIMON AND JUDE, Apostles Known as Simon the Zealot, St. Simon evangelized in Egypt and Mesopotamia, and travelled to Persia with St. Jude. There is debate over the method and place of his martyrdom: by some accounts he was crucified in Samaria, by others he was sawn in half in Persia (along with St. Jude). While Luke s gospel refers to him as Simon the Zealot, both Matthew and Mark call him Simon the Canaanean, which does not mean he is from Canaan, but that he is an enthusiast. Simon had joined others who were outspoken against the Roman occupation of Palestine. These Zealots were radical patriots who wanted to restore divine rule to their communities. Commit your concerns and intentions to St. Jude Thaddeus. His intercession can produce miracles. Only believe, and trust in the providence of Our Lord. Ask His cousin to assist you. Saints and Observances SOLEMNITY, FEAST, MEMORIAL OPTIONAL MEMORIAL OTHER St. Jude was the son of Cleophas and the nephew of Mary and Joseph. He preached in Syria, Mesopotamia, and Persia with St. Simon. He was a healer and exorcist, and could exorcise pagan idols, which caused the demons to flee and the statues to crumble. St. Jude was martyred by clubbing in Persia. Thaddaeus (or Lebbaeus ) is an Aramaic word meaning courageous and lively. His patronage of lost or impossible causes traditionally derives from confusion by many early Christians between Jude and the traitor Judas Iscariot; not understanding the difference between the names, they infrequently prayed for Jude s help, and devotion to him became something of a recourse of desperation. 01 NOV (Saturday): THE SOLEMNITY OF ALL SAINTS Instituted to honour all the saints, known and unknown. These crafts are made by indigenous women in Guatelmala, who are part of the Kateri Tekakwitha Mission Fund. The sales of these handicrafts help support and educate these women. There will be information available on how to support a scholarship for a young indigenous woman. She works in Guatemala with the Kateri Tekekwith Mission Fund helping these women develop their talents through formal and informal education. 5 THE HOLY FATHER S PRAYER INTENTIONS From the Holy See Each month His Holiness asks for general and missionary prayer intentions. SYNOD OF BISHOPS ON THE FAMILY [ Catholic News Service: 18 October 2014 ] After several days of animated debate over its official midterm report, the Synod of Bishops on the family agreed on a final document more clearly grounded in traditional Catholic teaching. Yet the assembly failed to reach consensus on especially controversial questions of Communion for the divorced and civilly remarried and the pastoral care of homosexuals. The synod s last working session, Oct. 18, also featured a speech by Pope Francis, in which he celebrated the members frank exchanges while warning against extremism in the defense of tradition or the pursuit of progress. Discussions in the synod hall had grown heated after the Oct. 13 delivery of a midterm report that used strikingly conciliatory language toward people with ways of life contrary to church teaching, including divorced and civilly remarried Catholics, cohabitating couples and those in same-sex unions. The summaries of working-group discussions, published Oct. 16, showed a majority of synod fathers wanted the final document to be clearer about relevant church doctrine and give more attention to families whose lives exemplify that teaching. The final report, which the pope ordered published almost at once after the synod s conclusion, featured many more citations of Scripture, as well as new references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the teachings of Pope Paul VI, St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict VI. Synod fathers voted on each of the document s 62 paragraphs. All received a simple majority, but three failed to gain the twothirds supermajority ordinarily required for approval of synodal documents. Two of those paragraphs dealt with a controversial proposal by German Cardinal Walter Kasper that would make it easier for divorced and civilly remarried Catholics to receive Communion. The document noted disagreements on the subject and recommended further study. The document s section on homosexuality, which also fell short of supermajority approval, was significantly changed from its counterpart in the midterm report. The original section heading welcoming homosexuals was changed to pastoral attention to persons with homosexual orientation. The final report quoted a 2003 document from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith: There are absolutely no grounds for considering homosexual unions to be in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God s plan for marriage and family. The synod s final report will serve as an agenda for the October 2015 world synod on the family, which will make recommendations to the pope.

6 Learn More About... Cathedrals Young Believers ca the dral To be called a cathedral, a church must be the principal church of a bishop s diocese. It is not based on size or the grandeur of the building, but only whether or not it is the church from which a bishop officiates. A cathedral cost an enormous amount of money to construct, and took a very long time to build. The church relied on volunteer labor from the town to build the cathedral. Often a family would help begin the construction, knowing they would be dead before it was completed. Often three generations of a family would work on a cathedral, with a father starting the work and only his grandchildren able to see the completed church. Chartres Cathedral, France Many cathedrals (in fact, many churches in general) are cruciform in shape (i.e., shaped like a cross). The dome of the cathedral in Florence is considered an architectural and engineering wonder. It is the largest masonry dome ever constructed (45 meters wide) and was constructed using ingenious techniques devised by a goldsmith and clockmaker named Filippo Brunelleschi. As it was impossible to find enough timber in all of Tuscany to build centering, Brunelleschi devised a way for the dome to support its own weight as it was being constructed. The Great East Window in York Minster Cathedral is the size of a tennis court. It is the single largest area of medieval glass in the world. Glass is not technically a solid, but rather a very, very thick liquid. This can be seen in the stained glass windows of some cathedrals, which are many centuries old. The glass in the windows is thicker at the bottom than at the top, as the glass has been flowing with gravity down towards the bottom over time. Architecturally, constructing the dome was one of the most challenging tasks in cathedral-building. A keystone (usually shaped like a plus sign) had to be dropped into the top of the dome to hold the pressure from all sides and keep the dome from falling in on itself. The stone sides of the dome would be built on wooden frames (called centering ), then the keystone dropped into place, and finally the wood was burned away. To show his confidence in his own abilities, the master architect was required to stand in the center beneath the dome when the wood frames were burned away. If his design was flawed, he would be killed by the falling stones.
