3 06 FEB (Monday): SAINTS PAUL MIKI and COMPANIONS, Martyrs (d. 1597) Paul, the son of a Japanese military leader, joined the Jesuits in 1580, and became known for his eloquent preaching. He was crucified with 25 other Japanese Catholics (the Martyrs of Nagasaki), mostly laymen, during the persecution of Christians under the Taiko, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ruler of Japan in the name of the emperor. Paul delivered his final sermon from the cross. 11 FEB (Saturday): OUR LADY OF LOURDES (1858) Our Lady appeared to Bernadette 18 times at the Grotto de Massabielle. Over 5 million visitors journey to Lourdes every year. It has been estimated that in the first 50 years of pilgrimages to Lourdes, over 4000 cures were attributed and recorded. This number is considered to be significantly lower than the actual number of cures. Two basilicas, the Basilique du Rosaire and the Upper Basilica, were built in the late 1800 s on either side of the grotto. Saints and Observances SOLEMNITY, FEAST, MEMORIAL OPTIONAL MEMORIAL OTHER 10 FEB (Friday): SAINT SCHOLASTICA, Virgin ( ) Twin sister of St. Benedict. After Benedict founded the monastery of Monte Cassino, Scholastica founded a community of nuns nearby, leading an exemplary life. She has the appearance of a young girl of sixteen or seventeen. She is dressed in a white robe, girdled at the waist with a blue ribbon which flows down all around it. A yoke closes it in graceful pleats at the base of the neck. The sleeves are long and tight-fitting. She wears upon her head a veil which is also white. This veil gives just a glimpse of her hair and then falls down at the back below her waist. Her feet are bare but covered by the last folds of her robe, except at the point where a yellow rose shines upon each of them. She holds on her right arm a rosary of white beads with a chain of gold, shining like the two roses on her feet. -- Bernadette s description of Our Lady of Lourdes after the first apparition. BENEFIT CONCERT A benefit Concert will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 12 February 2012 at 03:30 PM. This concert is to benefit the flood victims in the Philippines. Choir members from St. Thomas, St. Albert, Vallombrosa and Schola Seraphica, along with Margaret Durando and others will participate in this special event. Tickets are on sale for the Men s Club Crab Cioppino Dinner on Saturday, 11 February 2011 at Nativity School in the Sobrato Pavilion. The dinner will include Dungeness Crab Cioppino, pasta, salad; sourdough bread, and dessert. The tickets are $45.00 per person and include 2 glasses of wine per adult. In addition to the best Crab Cioppino anywhere dinner entertainment will be provided by Ron Borelli, accordionist and his 5-piece band. 5 From the Holy See THE HOLY FATHER S PRAYER INTENTIONS Each month His Holiness Benedict XVI asks for general and missionary prayer intentions. For February 2012, the Holy Father s prayer intentions are: General: Access to Water That all peoples may have access to water and other resources needed for daily life. Missionary: Health Workers That the Lord may sustain the efforts of health workers assisting the sick and elderly in the world s poorest regions. Dear Brothers and Sisters, ANGELUS ST. PETER S SQUARE Sunday, 22 JAN 2012 This Sunday falls in the middle of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity which is celebrated from 18 to 25 January. I cordially invite everyone to join in the prayer that Jesus addressed to the Father on the eve of his Passion: that they may all be one... so that the world may believe (Jn 17:21). This year in particular our meditation during the Week of Prayer for Unity refers to a passage of St Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians, from which the theme was formulated: We will all be changed by the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ (cf. 1 Cor 15:51-58). We are called to contemplate Christ s victory over sin and death, that is, his Resurrection, as an event that radically transforms all who believe in him and gives them access to incorruptible and immortal life. In addition, recognizing and accepting the transforming power of faith in Jesus Christ sustains Christians in the search for full unity among themselves. This year the resource material for the Week of Prayer for Unity has been prepared by a Polish group. Indeed Poland has lived through a long history of courageously fighting various adversities and time and again has given proof of great determination, motivated by faith. For this reason the words of the above-mentioned theme have special resonance and effectiveness in Poland. Down the centuries Polish Christians have spontaneously perceived a spiritual dimension in their desire for freedom and have understood that true victory can only be achieved if it is accompanied by a profound inner transformation. They remind us that our quest for unity can be realistically conducted if the change takes place within us first of all and if we let God act, if we let ourselves be transformed into the image of Christ, if we enter into new life in Christ who is the true victory. The visible unity of all Christians is always a task that comes from on high, from God, a task that demands the humility of recognizing our weakness and of receiving the gift. However, to use a phrase which Bl. John Paul II liked to repeat, every gift also becomes a commitment. The unity that comes from God therefore demands of us the daily commitment to open ourselves to each other in charity. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has been a central feature in the Church s ecumenical activity for many decades. The time that we devote to prayer for the full communion of Christ s disciples will enable us to understand more deeply that we will be transformed by his victory, by the power of his Resurrection. Next Wednesday, as is the custom, we shall conclude the Week of Prayer with the solemn celebration of Vespers on the Feast of the Conversion of St Paul, in the Basilica of St Paul Outside-the-Walls at which representatives of other Churches and Christian Communities will also be present. I expect many of you to come to this liturgical encounter to renew together our prayer to the Lord, the source of unity, with filial trust, to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. NATIVITY HOLY HOUR FOR PRIESTS Everyone is invited to attend our weekly holy hour for priests each Sunday evening at. It includes a rosary, chaplet of Divine Mercy, a mediation, brief talk on the spiritual life, and Benediction. Especially at this time, we need to lift up our priests both here in the parish and throughout the world with our prayer. Please join us.

The Conference of Bishops is calling on all Catholics to pray to Saint Michael for the protection of religious freedom in our country. RECENT HHS EDICT Never before in our US History has the Federal Government forced citizens to directly purchase what violates our beliefs. At issue here... is the survival of a cornerstone constitutionally protected freedom that ensures respect for conscience and religious liberty. -- Cardinal DiNardo The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops have vowed to fight the January 20th announcement by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that nearly all employers will be forced to cover drugs and procedures that violate their conscience in their health insurance plans. The HHS rule requires that sterilization and contraception including controversial abortifacients be included among preventive services coverage in almost every healthcare plan available to Americans. What does this mean to us? It means that, if fully enacted, any of us that are not directly employed by a church will have no choice whatsoever than to have our insurance premiums go towards contraceptives, abortafacients and sterilization. The edict also opens the door for the federal government to participate in funding these, so our premiums and our taxes will be used for these purposes, without our consent and without giving us any recourse to object (or opt-out via a conscience clause ). Inform yourself fully on this issue. The USCCB site has excellent resources: DID YOU KNOW? Young Believers Spending time with our Lord in a Holy Hour has benefits of which most of us are not aware: Our Lord revealed to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque how to make a Holy Hour. In 1674, Our Lord appeared to her and complained of the indifference with which mankind treated His Love for them and asked her to make atonement for this ingratitude. He said: I will make you a partaker of that sorrow unto death which it was My will to suffer in the Garden of Olives. To join with Me in the humble prayer which I then offered to My Divine Father in agony, you shall rise before midnight, and remain with Me upon your knees prostrate for one hour, with your face to the ground, to appease the anger of My Eternal Father and ask of Him pardon for sinners. In an Apostolic Letter on 30 MAR 1886, Pope Leo XIII allowed the faithful to make their Holy Hour on any hour and day of the week. Every Holy Hour we make so pleases the Heart of Jesus that it is recorded in Heaven and retold for all eternity! -- Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta Our Lord revealed to Blessed Dina Belanger that a Holy Hour of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament is so important that a multitude of souls go to heaven that had been destined for hell.
