In 1206 he founded a community of nuns in Prouille, France, and later, with six followers, founded a community of preaching friars which gained papal approval in 1216 and became known as the Order of Preachers. Popularly known as the Dominicans, the order today has 6500 religious worldwide and is based on Dominic s concept of harmonizing the intellectual life with asceticism and apostolic works. 09 AUG (Saturday): SAINT TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS (EDITH STEIN), Martyr ( ) Youngest of seven children in a Jewish family, who lost interest and faith in Judaism by age 13. Witnessing the strength of faith of Catholic friends led her to an interest in and conversion to Catholicism. Edith became a Carmelite nun in 1934, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross; she was a profound spiritual writer. When the Nazis invaded the Netherlands, she and her sister Rose, also a convert to Catholicism, were captured and sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz where they died in the ovens like so many others. Ministry and Group News FATIMA CELEBRATION On Wednesday, 13 August 2014, we will have our next celebration of the Blessed Mother s apparition at Fatima, Portugal. We will have a Mass at 07:30 PM, followed by a talk on the message of Fatima, rosary candlelight procession around the church grounds, and healing Benediction. Please join us and bring your family. Nativity is a drop-off point for collecting new or used children s books for this program. For questions please call Margaret Durando at 650/ THE DEVOTION OF THE NOVENA A novena is a devotion consisting of prayer said (most typically) on nine successive days, asking to obtain special graces. The practice of saying a novena is derived from Scripture. Upon Jesus Ascension into heaven, He told His disciples to pray together in the upper room and devote themselves to constant prayer (Acts 1:14). The Apostles, Blessed Virgin Mary, and other followers of Jesus prayed together for nine consecutive days, concluding on Pentecost. Novena prayers are considered to be especially efficacious when the novena immediately precedes the saint s feast day (begin the novena so that the ninth day is the day just prior to the feast day). 6 Young Believers NATIVITY SCHOOL OF RELIGION It s registration time! Registration has begun for the Children s Faith Formation Program. We will have a Beginning of the Year celebration on Sunday, 14 September 2014 at the 09:30 AM Mass and coffee and donuts after Mass. Classes will officially begin on Sunday, 21 September 2014 at the school. Current families should receive all registration materials by mail. New families may contact Mrs. Hickam by with their mailing information and number of Registration Forms needed. Mrs. Hickam will be available after all the Masses on 02-03, and August 2014 to register your children and answer any questions about the program. Classes for grade levels 1-6 and Sacraments Class are held on Sundays from 08:15-09:15 AM at the school, and continue on in our 09:30 AM Mass in our Children s Liturgy of the Word. There is room for all grade levels 1-8 and high school students who have not yet received the Sacraments. Our program is dedicated to providing for all children, not only preparing them for the Sacraments but also enriching their faith journeys year after year. Please come by the table or call/ the CCD office if you need any forms or have any questions/concerns. Just a reminder: First Reconciliation/First Communion requires two years of instruction before a child is eligible to receive the Sacraments. Children should be enrolled starting in Grade 1 and they are encouraged to continue onto the next grade level after they receive their First Communion. However, we have a class to accommodate those children who have not started in Grade 1. The CCD Confirmation Preparation Program is an Archdiocesan-required two-year program. We enroll children starting in their 7th grade year as well as those in older grades who have not yet been confirmed. Classes are held on Wednesday evenings 07:00-08:00 PM. GERTRUDE THE GREAT Our Lord revealed to St. Gertrude that the following prayer would release 1000 souls from Purgatory each time it was said. Eternal Father, I offer You the Most Precious Blood of Your Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the Universal Church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen. BIBLE MATH: Let us assume that a grown man will eat, for a light dinner, half of one fish and one loaf of bread (the loaves in the Gospel story were probably more like what we would call rolls or buns ). The Gospel tells us that Jesus fed 5000 men, not counting the women and children. Let us also assume that there were 3/4 as many women as men, and 1/2 as many children as men. A woman also eats half of one fish, and one loaf of bread, and a child eats one quarter of one fish and half of one loaf of bread. 1. How many people were there all together to feed? 2. How many fish were needed? How many loaves of bread? 3. By what number would Jesus have to multiply the fishes He had to feed everyone? 4.
