3 22 MAY (Tuesday): SAINT RITA OF CASCIA, Religious ( ) Like Elizabeth Ann Seton, Rita of Cascia was a wife, mother, widow and member of a religious community. Over the years, her austerity, prayerfulness and charity became legendary. When she developed wounds on her forehead, people quickly associated them with the wounds from Christ s crown of thorns. She meditated frequently on Christ s passion. Her care for the sick nuns was especially loving. She also counseled lay people who came to her monastery. 24 MAY (Thursday): DEDICATION OF THE BASILICA OF SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI, (1253) Because of the remarkable witness that St. Francis has made to the world, a magnificent church was built in his honor. In 1253 on the 25th of May Pope Innocent IV solemnly consecrated the Church. Seven years later to the day, the remains of Saint Francis were taken from the chapel of Saint George and placed in the new church. Saints and Observances 25 MAY (Friday): SAINT BEDE THE VENERABLE ( ) Considered the most learned man of his day, Bede was born around the time England was finally Christianized. His writings started the idea of dating our era from the birth of Christ, and our knowledge of the history of England before the 8th century is mainly the result of Bede s writings. He is a Doctor of the Church. POPE GREGORY VII ( ) SOLEMNITY, FEAST, MEMORIAL OPTIONAL MEMORIAL OTHER SAINT MARY MAGDALENE DE PAZZI ( ) 26 MAY (Saturday): SAINT PHILIP NERI, Priest ( ) While visiting a Dominican chapel in San Germano, Philip received word in a vision that he had an apostolate in Rome, so he cut himself off from his family and went there. During the Easter season of 1544, while praying in the catecomb of San Sebastiano, he received a vision of a globe of fire that entered his chest, and he experienced an ecstasy that physically enlarged his heart. He would hear confessions by the hour, and could tell penitents their sins before they confessed them. He founded both the Confraternity of the Most Holy Trinity and the Congregation of the Oratory. Ministry and Group News ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY VOLUNTEERING Wondering where to volunteer your valuable time on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday morning for Nativity? Come join other Nativity St. Vincent de Paul members in delivering food to the many needy families in our parish. Make home visits to gather information on how to best provide assistance with rent or overdue utility bills. We have an immediate need for Thursday mornings. For more information, please call Ann Olin at 650/ VIRTUES AND VICES CLASS On Tuesday, 15 May and 22 May 2012, Nativity s Adult Education will present talks by Father Robert Barron (of Catholicism fame), on vices and their antidotes: the virtues. Father Barron is a most engaging speaker with a sense of presenting Catholic thought in a great way. The first week will cover the introduction, Pride/Humility, Envy/Admiration, and Anger/Forgiveness. The second class on the following week will be on Avarice/Generosity, Gluttony/Asceticism, and Lust/Chastity. If you need a refresher on examining your conscience, or would just plain like to grow in your life of virtue, you will enjoy and get a lot out of these classes. Consider coming! As usual, the morning class will begin at 09:30 AM, and this will be repeated in the evening at 07:00 PM. A varied recital with concert organist James Welch, who received his doctorate in music from Stanford University, celebrates the 25th anniversary of the organ installation at St. Denis. 5 From the Holy See THE HOLY FATHER S PRAYER INTENTIONS Each month His Holiness Benedict XVI asks for general and missionary prayer intentions. For May 2012, the Holy Father s prayer intentions are: General: The Family That initiatives which defend and uphold the role of the family may be promoted within society. Missionary: Mary, Guide of Missionaries That Mary, Queen of the World and Star of Evangelization, may accompany all missionaries in proclaiming her Son Jesus. BENEDICT XVI GIVES ADVICE FOR THOSE STRUGGLING TO PRAY VATICAN CITY, 16 MAY 2012 (Zenit.org).- Taking up the theme of prayer in the letters of St. Paul, Benedict XVI today reflected on the essential role of the Holy Spirit for those who wish to communicate with God. The Pope spoke of prayer not primarily as a fruit of human effort, but as a gift, the fruit of the living, vivifying presence of the Father of Jesus Christ in us. Speaking extemporaneously, the Holy Father reflected on the human desire for prayer: We want to pray, but God is far off, we do not have the words, the language, to speak with God, nor even the thought to do so. We can only open ourselves, place our time at God s disposition, wait for Him to help us to enter into true dialogue. The Apostle says: this very lack of words, this absence of words, yet this desire to enter into contact with God, is prayer that the Holy Spirit not only understands, but brings and interprets before God. This very weakness of ours becomes -- through the Holy Spirit -- true prayer, true contact with God. The Holy Spirit is, as it were, the interpreter who makes us, and God, understand what it is we wish to say. In The Community (cont d.) IMMACULATE CONCEPTION ACADEMY Next weekend, Sister Lilly Fitzpatrick of Immaculate Conception Academy will be speaking at the 05:00 PM Mass on Saturday and at 09:30 AM and 11:30 AM Masses on Sunday about Immaculate Conception Academy. ICA is an all-girls, college prep Catholic high school in the Mission District of San Francisco. They have implemented a work-study program and are looking for organizations to sponsor their students. Currently girls are working at companies such as GAP, Bank of the West, UCSF, Jones Day Law Firm, Kaiser Permanente, etc. Nationwide this program is already succeeding in 25 other cities coast to coast. A team of 4 students work at an organization to cover one full-time position, rotating work days. Operating as a small outsourcing staff agency, ICA enables the organization to fill needed clerical or entry-level positions. The students are on site 36 weeks a year, 40 hours a week adding diversity, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and succeed. It includes a rosary, chaplet of Divine Mercy, a mediation, brief talk on the spiritual life, and Benediction.
