He said that in this Year of Faith we should recognize the central belief of our faith, and humbly ask Him for His grace and protection. 3 Saints and Observances 05 JUN (Tuesday): SAINT BONIFACE, Bishop and Martyr ( ) An Anglo-Saxon, Boniface had a strong desire to minister to those who are of one blood and bone with him and convert pagan Saxons to Christianity. A remarkable contest occurred in 723 when Boniface demonstrated his opposition to the worship of trees and other traditions associated with the old Norse gods. He cut down an oak tree dedicated to the god Thor, in full public view. The crowd held its collective breath, waiting for fire to come down from heaven, but all that happened was that Boniface used the wood to construct a chapel on the same spot, with many conversions to Christianity resulting. Under the guidance of faculty members, participants discuss selections from the great books on a given theme. They work together to unfold the author s meaning and discern what truth is present in their works. 5 From the Holy See THE HOLY FATHER S PRAYER INTENTIONS Each month His Holiness asks for general and missionary prayer intentions. For June 2013, the Holy Father s prayer intentions are: General: Mutual Respect That a culture of dialogue, listening, and mutual respect may prevail among peoples. Missionary: New Evangelization That where secularization is strongest, Christian communities may effectively promote a new evangelization. THE PRIEST S VESTMENTS The vestments used by the sacred ministers in liturgical celebrations derive from ancient Greek and Roman secular clothing. In the first centuries the raiment of persons of a certain social level (the honestiores, persons of rank with property) was adopted for the Christian liturgy and this practice was maintained in the Church, even after the peace of Constantine. 1 At the beginning of his vesting the priest washes his hands, reciting an appropriate prayer; beyond the practical hygienic purpose, this act has a profound symbolism, inasmuch as it signifies passage from the profane to the sacred, from the world of sin to the pure sanctuary of the Most High. The washing of the hands is in some manner equivalent to removing the sandals before the burning bush (Exodus 3:5). 2 The prayer hints at this spiritual dimension: Da, Domine, virtutem manibus meis ad abstergendam omnem maculam; ut sine pollutione mentis et corporis valeam tibi servire (Give virtue to my hands, O Lord, that being cleansed from all stain I might serve you with purity of mind and body). 3 After the washing of the hands, the vesting proper begins. There is a prayer said with each step of the vesting. 1. The priest begins with the amice, a rectangular linen cloth, which has two strings and is placed over the shoulders and around the neck; the strings are then tied about the waist. The amice has the purpose of covering the everyday clothing, even if it is the priest s clerical garb The alb is the long white garment worn by the sacred ministers, which recalls the new and immaculate clothing that every Christian has received through baptism. 3. Over the alb and around the waist is placed the girdle or cincture, a cord made of wool or other suitable material that is used as a belt. All those who wear albs must also wear the cincture. 4. The maniple is an article of liturgical dress used in the celebration of the extraordinary form of the Holy Mass of the Roman Rite The stole is the distinctive element of the raiment of the ordained minister and it is always worn in the celebration of the sacraments and sacramentals. It is a strip of material that is embroidered, according to the norm, whose color varies with respect to the liturgical season or feast day. 6. Finally, the chasuble is put on, the vestment proper to him who celebrates the Holy Mass. 6

6 Young Believers What Does the Catechism Say About... Corpus Christi? Chapter 1, Article 3 (The Sacrament of the Eucharist) sections : The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch. The Eucharist is the efficacious sign and sublime cause of that communion in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which the Church is kept in being. It is the culmination both of God s action sanctifying the world in Christ and of the worship men offer to Christ and through him to the Father in the Holy Spirit. Finally, by the Eucharistic celebration we already unite ourselves with the heavenly liturgy and anticipate eternal life, when God will be all in all. In brief, the Eucharist is the sum and summary of our faith: Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist, and the Eucharist in turn confirms our way of thinking. section 1333: At the heart of the Eucharistic celebration are the bread and wine that, by the words of Christ and the invocation of the Holy Spirit, become Christ s Body and Blood. Faithful to the Lord s command the Church continues to do, in his memory and until his glorious return, what he did on the eve of his Passion: He took bread.... He took the cup filled with wine.... The signs of bread and wine become, in a way surpassing understanding, the Body and Blood of Christ; they continue also to signify the goodness of creation.
