3 Saints and Observances 08 OCT (Monday): COLUMBUS DAY (Observed) The very discovery of America has deep spiritual origins. From a journal written by Christopher Columbus: It was the Lord who put into my mind (I could feel His hand upon me) the fact that it would be possible to sail from here to the Indies. There is no question that the inspiration was from the Holy Spirit... I am a most unworthy sinner, but I have cried out to the Lord for grace and mercy, and they have covered me completely. I have found the sweetest consolation since I made it my whole purpose to enjoy His marvelous presence... no one should fear to undertake any task in the name of our Saviour, if it is just and if the intention is purely for His holy service. The Light and the Glory, Peter Marshall and David Manuel 09 OCT (Tuesday): SAINT DENIS and COMPANIONS Denis was the first Bishop of Paris. His success roused the ire of local pagans, and he was imprisoned by the Roman governor. Denis was martyred in the persecutions of Valerius with Saint Rusticus and Saint Eleutherius. His feast was added to the Roman Calendar in 1568 by Pope Saint Pius V. Denis is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. SOLEMNITY, FEAST, MEMORIAL OPTIONAL MEMORIAL OTHER 12 OCT (Friday): SAINT SERAPHIN OF MONTEGRANARO, Religious (d. 1604) Born of a poor, pious family. An uneducated shepherd in his youth, he spent his time in the fields in prayer. He entered the Capuchins at age 16, receiving the name Seraphin. Noted for his simple, obedient, ascetic life, and his charity to the poor. He had a special devotion to the Blessed Eucharist and to Our Lady. PRAY THE ROSARY Observe this special devotion to our Blessed Mother as often as you can. I am the Lady of the Rosary, I have come to warn the faithful to amend their lives and ask for pardon for their sins. They must not offend Our Lord any more, for He is already too grievously offended by the sins of men. People must say the rosary. Eugene Konkel Fr. Steve Davies MOVIE NIGHT: 27 OCT 2012 The Nativity Men s Prayer Group is sponsoring another movie on Saturday 27 October 2012 at 06:00 PM in the O Hare Center. The movie is For Greater Glory. From approximately 1917 to 1929, the Mexican Government gradually attacked the Catholic Church in that country. In 1927, there was open warfare between the secular atheistic government and armed Catholics when government became bold enough to start killing the priests and closing churches. This movie is about those last years. It is a very well-made movie starring Academy Award nominee Andy Garcia, Peter O Toole, and actors from such films as Bella and The Nativity Story. It hightlights some of the saintly martyrs (there were many) during that time. Everyone is encouraged to attend. As an added bonus, Roberto Lujan, a member of the Men s Group, who is from Mexico and had a relative involved in the struggle, will give a 15-minute introduction to this civil war. 5 From the Holy See THE HOLY FATHER S PRAYER INTENTIONS Each month His Holiness Benedict XVI asks for general and missionary prayer intentions. For October 2012, the Holy Father s prayer intentions are: General: New Evangelization That the New Evangelization may progress in the oldest Christian countries. Missionary: World Mission Day That the celebration of World Mission Day may result in a renewed commitment to evangelization. GET READY FOR THE YEAR OF FAITH! In the Acts of the Apostles, we learn that God has opened the door of faith for the early Church. But did you know that God has opened the door of faith for each one us and he invites us to step through the threshold into a deeper relationship with him? The upcoming Year of Faith is an opportunity for every Catholic to turn towards Jesus Christ, encounter him in the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist and rediscover the Faith and Church. With his Apostolic Letter of October 11, 2011, Porta Fidei..., Pope Benedict XVI declared that a Year of Faith will begin on October 11, 2012 and conclude on November 24, (Vatican II) and also the twentieth anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. 6 Young Believers BY THE NUMBERS Last week s first reading was from the Book of Numbers (one we don t hear from often in the cycle of readings). Here are some numbers we should all remember.
