1 From the Rector The Episcopal Church of the Nativity The Window Volume 25, Issue 4 Alleluia, Christ is risen! As we enter into this Easter season, I am mindful of the power of the resurrection in our lives. I was very nervous about our Lenten series, as politics is often such a charged issue in the current environment. As we listened to each speaker, as we heard their words, as we learned, marked and inwardly digested what they offered each week, I began to realize that in the resurrection there is power to heal the divides we face. So often in this day and age, we find ourselves compartmentalized, listening to the sound of our own opinions coming back to us even louder in our echo chambers. So often what passes for news is, in fact, commentary designed not to edify or enlighten, but to draw us in by our natural desire to observe conflict. In the 24-hour news cycle, what used to inform and raise the bar of civil discourse has instead begun to debase and divide us. This phenomenon is not limited to the progressives on the left nor to the conservatives on the right. It is a dysfunction in our national discourse. And yet, as I listened to each speaker, as I watched the congregation s reaction to their presentations, I was reminded that the power of our worship is in our commonality, in our oneness, in our unity as the Body of Christ continuing that work of reconciliation. I was recently asked by someone who listened to my presentation, Wasn t that a really risky move on your part, discussing your political thoughts with your congregation? After a moment of thought, I replied, No. They know I love them, I know they love me. We don t have to agree on everything to hold each other up April2018 in love and listen. As I mentioned at the end of my talk, this is the secret to our healing. As much and as strongly as we may disagree with one another on the best course to solve the problems which face us, this congregation, this family understands the potency of the resurrected Christ in our lives. As Jesus rises again from the dead, he calls us to set aside our earthly lives. He calls us to live for the kingdom of God. He calls us to live, not for ourselves and our selfish desires, but through repentance to live for one another. You all have heard me say it before, but as Dietrich Bonhoeffer so eloquently phrased it, when Christ calls us, he calls us to come and die. In the resurrection of Jesus we each die to our old lives. We die to sin. We die to hatred. We die to cruelty. We are reborn through his death and resurrection to a life that looks outside of itself to those in whom the Imago Dei is revealed, to our brothers and our sisters, to the stranger in our midst, to the sick and suffering, to the poor and destitute, to the wounded and weary. This congregation has been doing that work and the result is our ability to hold one another up in love despite the world which cries out for conflict, for judgment, for division. The result is that we can See PETER, Pag age 4

4 PETER, from 1 see God in one another enough that our artificial divisions of this world begin to grow hazy and dim in the light of our risen Lord. This is the power of the resurrection for our time. This is the Good News which Christ would have us proclaim. This is the Gospel message which the world needs so desperately to hear. We are one in Christ Jesus who became incarnate, who lived among us, who died blameless on the cross and who has risen from the dead to give power and authority to his disciples in the world to proclaim that Good News to the world. Christ has commissioned us to bear witness to the unity which comes from our shared faith, to cry out in the wilderness of the world that we are one as he and the Father and the Holy Spirit are one. Jesus death has given us the visible witness to that central truth from which we recognize his presence in one another. There is no more simple statement to remind us as bearers of his promise than when we answer: The Lord is risen indeed, Alleluia! 9 What is the LOIS Guild? Ladies (and men) on Instant Standby The LOIS Guild is a group of Nativity parishioners who are on standby to provide meals to families and individuals who are sick, have been in the hospital, or have experienced a death or other tragedy in the family. The main objective is to care for our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ at a time of need, said Mary Alford and Becky Taylor Scott, co-chairs of the LOIS Guild. The current plan is to have 4-6 teams consisting of 4-6 individuals. Our goal is to have each team serve for a month, twice a year, said Mary. Each team will have a lead person who will be responsible for communicating with the Parish Office. Additionally, each team will have a designated person responsible for communicating with Daughters of the King Saturday, March 10 saw Nativity host the Daughters of the King Diocesan Spring Assembly. the family or individual to coordinate meals, delivery schedules, and special dietary needs. Menus are decided by each team. Some might decide to have a set menu they provide, others could decide depending on individual circumstances. Teams could have entrees prepared ahead of time and frozen, and then purchase fresh items when needed. A menu can consist of an entrée or casserole, a green salad, fresh fruit, bread and a dessert, said Becky. It really is up to each individual team to find what works best for them.
