2 Services for: Today February 19, 2012 (The Last Sunday of Epiphany) 11 am St. Matthew Holy Eucharist & Baptism (White) 7 pm St. John the Evangelist Evening Prayer (Green) Commentary of the Readings for Today: First Reading (2 Kings 2:1-12) A story of discipleship and transition of leadership, Elisha dutifully stays with and follows his master, Elijah, knowing that Elijah is about to die. He seeks one final blessing from his master a double portion of his spirit. A chariot of fire receives Elijah into the sky. Psalm 50:1-6 Second Reading (2 Corinthains 4:3-6) Paul reminds the Christians at Corinth that his message was never about eloquent delivery, but always about Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus sake. Just as the God of this world blinds those who do not receive the gospel, the true God of all opens the eyes of those who do. The Gospel (Mark 9:2-9) Six days after explaining that he would be executed in Jerusalem, Jesus leads three of his disciples up a mountain where he was transfigured before them. These disciples saw Jesus speaking with Moses and Elijah and did not know how to respond. A voice from the cloud instructed them to listen to Jesus. ST. Parents are asked to please pick up your children at the school at 4:15 pm. A reminder to all parishioners that Lent begins on Wednesday, February 22. As such there will be a celebration of Holy Eucharist and the Imposition of Ashes 7:30 pm at St. John the Evangelist. Please come along as we mark the beginning of this most Holy Season. St. Matthew s Congregation is asked to note that the Visioning Day that was cancelled due to weather, has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 3 10 am 2 pm at the Lion s Club, Bay Roberts. If you plan on attending, it is very important to contact the office by Monday, February 27. Because of the

4 change in date, even if you were registered for the lasting visioning day, please call the office to register again. We hope to see you there! Regional Anglican Ministry: The Parishes of the Resurrection, Port-de- Grave and Bay Roberts-Coley s Point will be holding a Lenten Quiet Day on Saturday, February 25 from 10 am 2 pm. This will be hosted by the Parish of Port-de-Grave and the retreat leader will be the Reverend Amanda Taylor. This is a free event, but for lunch purposes, if you plan on attending please contact the Parish Office at We hope to see you there as we prepare our hearts and minds for this Lenten journey. Is there meaning behind the fact that Lent is 40 days long. In Scripture, the number 40 seems to be connected to periods of waiting or preparing or suffering. Noah and his family stayed in the ark for 40 days during the flood. Moses and the Children of Israel wandered for 40 years in the desert on their way to the Promised Land. Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness fasting. So Lent s 40 days (not including Sundays) are meant to indicate that this is a time when we wait and prepare and ready our hearts to remember Jesus suffering and death for our salvation. Dear Lord, let me use these 40 days well as I seek to know you more and more. Amen. (Taken from Creative Communications 40 Questions and Answers for Lent ). The Parish of Bay Roberts Coley s Point will be offering a Lenten Bible Study on the Beatitudes. While only ten verses in length, the Beatitudes are some of the most powerful teachings of Jesus. This study will begin on Friday, March 2, 10 am at the rectory 273 Water Street. Come along as we walk this Lenten journey together! St. Patrick s Day Breakfast will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church Hall on Saturday, March 17 th from 8 11 am.
