3 Lado a Lado Side by Side Mission to The Dominican Republic 2013 On June 15, 2013 John and Elizabeth Welch joined 15 other Episcopalians from The Diocese of Georgia for the tenth annual mission trip to our mutual Companion Diocese of The Dominican Republic. Our team spent a week at The Episcopal Camp of The Mount of The Transfiguration in El Pedregal, Jarabacoa. There we worked side by side with our Dominican brothers and sisters in Christ building two houses in the community and conducting knitting and crocheting classes for the women and young girls from El Pedregal. The two houses in El Pedregal were owned by parishioners from The Episcopal Church of The Mount of the Transfiguration and, at the beginning of the week, basically consisted of nailed together and painted boards. By the end of the week, and with mucho help from the family members and members of the community, the wood shacks had been replaced with cinder-block houses, each containing several rooms and beautiful painted corrugated iron roofs. During the construction process, the homeowners camped out in storage sheds. Needless to say, both families we extremely grateful for their new homes. While the construction team was busy mixing and pouring cement, the knitting and crocheting team conducted classes for 16 young girls in the mornings and for 40 women and teenagers in the afternoon. During the course of these classes, the women and young girls were able to produce many items that could be sold at markets to help put food on their tables. Since this was the tenth year for these classes, we were able to build on the already-learned skills as well as working with several first-time knitters. At the end of the week, our team, together with the Community of El Pedregal celebrated our time together with a splash party for the children and an evening fiesta for the community, complete with meringue dancing! As always, we set out to share the love of God with our Dominican brothers and sisters in Christ, and we ended up seeing that love shining back at us in the very eyes of those to whom He sent us. We would like to thank our Nativity Family, The Home Team, for all your prayers and support, without which this mission would be impossible. We plan to host a dinner/slide show about our trip in the near future. Thanks be to God. John and Elizabeth Welch.
4 A great big thank you to everyone for supporting Nativity s Outreach Ministry. Since starting this new chapter in our outreach ministry we have done some wonderful things. So far, we have raised $4,582.52! Brown Bag Program To date, we have given $1, to the Brown Bag Program at the Wiregrass Area Food Bank. That means we are helping 19 seniors with their food and nutrition needs each month. Additionally, we have given $1,390 to the school scholarship program as part of the El Pedregal/DR Mission program. At $350 per scholarship we are helping more than in previous years. Other donations we made are: Wilmer Hall.. $500 Camp Beckwith $500 On top of all this, the recent UTO ingathering raised more than $800. We are planning many wonderful Outreach events in the coming months and we will keep you all informed as to where, when and what. Thank you again! Nativity Outreach Ministry
