Assistant Trevor Vargason, Sexton St. Mark's on the Campus strives to be a Eucharistic Community of reflection and action, acceptance and growth, Gospel and world. Dear Friends, We will soon be entering the season of Lent, a deliberately penitential season. Back in Advent, I was beginning to think about Lent when in a book on hearing private confessions, I came across the following words regarding general confession (they are a quote from yet another source): In an interdependent world repentance/penance has a special complexity, perhaps. A person's complicity in sin is magnified exponentially..... Much of the time we might even be quite unaware of our accommodation to social and economic sin, when our benefits and apparent blessings are obtained unknowingly in the context of exploitation of others. In a world such as this, repentance/penance surely means deepening economic and political awareness. The reality of these words was driven home rather powerfully in the factory fire in Bangledesh a few months ago. The factory had only one exit, the stairwell down which workers had to flee, and the fire was raging up it. Over a hundred twenty bodies were fund in the rubble of the factory. "Outsourcing" might be an economic issue; it apparently is also a moral and ethical issue. Even as we complain about the loss of jobs in our own country, we make use of the access to relatively inexpensive goods produced in unsafe situations like this factory. It's easy for us to do so without even thinking about it. It's but one of the ways in which our sin is corporate as well as individual. "Amendment of life" in this instance might be to stop purchasing clothes produced in Bangledesh, and also to be deliberate about increasing our awareness of workers and their conditions elsewhere, and even in the United States. We will of course have the General Confession as part of our corporate liturgies during Lent; however, I am also available for private confessions, to address sins that are more individual in nature. It's always a good practice to "examine our lives, repent of our sins, and be in love and charity with all people" (BCP, Catechism, p. 860, in response to the question, "What is required of us when we come to the Eucharist?"). At some points in our lives we need to do more than this. Lent is an especially good time to reflect on our lives and practice private confession if we deem it necessary. I pray we all have a blessed Lenten season as we prepare to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. In His peace,
