2 December 2016 Give food for our Food Pantry It s been a busy month and portions of our products are running low We could really use: Individual portion deserts * Spam 16oz Cooking Oil * Chili * mixed fruit Peas * individual cold cereals * jello Mac & Cheese * 1# bag sugar * rice Bring items on Sundays and place in the basket at the rear of the narthex Last week, Pippa and Craig Lawson met me at the apartment of our refugee family so we could figure how to properly install the car seat. (We are helping Paw Ku get started in her English class by providing some rides.) With Craig leading the way, we figured out proper strap adjustments, anchor points, and all so the four year old can travel safely. This photo shows Paw Ku (the mom), Pay Pay (the dad), Ehbudopaw (the daughter) and Aymia (the son) with Craig Lawson and Pippa Lawson. In December we plan to make a family trip to the Lincoln Children's Museum. 3 Good News! The Operating Endowment Fund (OEF) currently contains $12,863 in cash (up from $9403 in August). Thanks to all who have been making pledge payments and contributions over the past months. If you pledged an amount to contribute to OEF in 2016 and have not made it, please consider making your contribution before December 31, The total of these contributions would increase the OEF cash to $18,353 for 2016 or about 37 % of the $50,000 goal for the fund by the end of If you are not sure of your pledged amount, please contact Bob Kuzelka at or rkuzelka@unl.edu. When making contributions note OEF on the memo line of the check and use the special envelopes in the pew racks. Thank you! GOOD KING WENCESLAS WOULD SMILE Thanks to all who donated coats for the November drive for the Lutheran Family Services refugee program. You filled the collection box and then some! During Advent, the congregation is invited to donate hats, underwear, gloves, and socks (HUGS) for the People's City Mission. Thank you for sharing your blessings with people in our community. This award is presented at our Annual Meeting in January and honors a person or persons who have served Christ as part of St. Mark s on the Campus in a notable way during the previous twelve months. If you would like to nominate someone, please let one of the wardens know (Opal Doerr or Martha Davies). They will ask you to write a description of the person s/group s service, and all nominations will then be considered by a panel of highly qualified evaluators :) If you wish to check out previous winners, they are listed on the plaques in the Lounge. Likewise, the parish occasionally awards the Peek Award to someone who has contributed in an outstanding way to the life of the parish over an extended period of time. If you would like to nominate someone for the Peek Award, the same process is followed. 5

Present: Connie Backus-Yoder, Opal Doerr, Stan Sipple, Brent Cejda, Fr. Jerry, Quinn Mobbs, Betty Fisher, Jeanine Jewell, Martha Davies, Steve Blum, Juliana Bukoski and Bill Huenemann Absent: Larry Reznicek, Lucy Webster Guests: Thanksgivings and concerns were shared by those in attendance. Opening Prayer was led by Fr. Jerry. Discernment Guidelines were read by those in attendance. October Minutes The Minutes had previously been distributed by . Being no corrections or additions made, Stan Sipple moved to approve with Connie Backus-Yoder 2nd. Motion passed. Treasurer s Report: Question of amounts reversed in previous report was confirmed and have been corrected. Motion by Brent Cejda to accept the Treasurer s report for August; 2 nd by Steve Blum. Motion passed. Warden s Report: Vestry Retreat Jeanine had ed copies of the notes taken during the session to everyone. Discussion followed about suggestions to improve our interacting with visitors to the service, creating Tips and Clues for ushers in coaching how to follow the bulletin and service order. Stewardship - is progressing, with goal nearly met at this point and a few members yet to submit their pledge cards. First Friday Art we will be participating and have installed an art rail high on the walls of the Lounge that will allow art to be hung around the room. Bishop s Visit-went very well it was felt, great help was received from many members to host (especially in the kitchen) and the Bishop said he enjoyed his visit. Nominating Committee Reported Brent Cejda has agreed to be the Junior Warden, Kim Thomason will fill Brent s remaining term on Vestry, and Kenny Thomasonwill be replacing Quinn Mobbs next year. Steve Sim will serve again. Next Vestry Retreat is scheduled for February 4 th, 2017 (snow date the 11 th ). Rector s Report: Refugee Family Update It was noted that Peg Sheldrick shared notes from the 11/6/16 meeting in today s bulletin. Sabbatical Preparations are being completed. Verneda Kelly (who has a full time job) will be covering in Father Jerry s absence on Sundays and will attend Vestry Meetings and the Retreat scheduled in February. The Muslim Student Association and the UNL Dean of Students have approached us seeking a place the MSA members could use for daily prayers. We have a space in the lower level that they felt could accommodate their daily needs and the Lounge would also be used for a larger group on Fridays. The opportunity for St. Mark s outreach feels like a great match. We have some logistical things to work out yet and it was suggested that we include a clause in the Facility Use Agreement to have both parties review the usage after days for satisfaction. Parrish Administrator s Report: Revised/updated Facility Use forms and Use Policy were distributed previously by and it was explained the changes were made to better reflect our unique facility s needs and functions. Our expanding use by outside groups has/is creating some logistical issues that we are working out. Interior directional signage could be better presented and ideas/thoughts to be proposed soon. Updated the group that our five furnaces, the roof top solar panels, the Purtzer Piano and the Bedient Pipe Organ have all received their fall/winter checkups and/or tunings. The Lord s Prayer was led by Fr. Jerry in closing. The next Vestry meeting is scheduled for December 18 th (2017 budget approval will be needed) The Annual Meeting will be January 22 nd, 2017 Meeting was adjourned at 1:46 PM Respectfully submitted, Bill Huenemann, Clerk of Vestry 6

9 OFFICE HOURS The church office/building is open Monday Friday; 9:00 AM to Noon & 1:00 to 3:30ish PM Bill Huenemann, Parish Administrator is in the office during these hours. Diane Crawford, Bookkeeper s office hours Mondays 9-3:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday 9:00-Noon. Please feel free to us anytime, and we will respond as soon as we can. The Rector (Father Jerry) is available by appointment Tuesday thru Sunday, although he is generally around the church building 10-3 Tuesday thru Friday. However, because of worship, meetings, lunches and coffees with parishioners, pastoral visits, appointments away from the church office, time set aside for sermon preparation, administrative tasks, study and reading, etc., an appointment with the Rector is always recommended.
