Whether you are stepping through the doors of St. James for the first time or whether you ve been part of the life of this community for many years, we are glad you are here! St. James is a place where we learn and pray together, ask questions, and seek to live more deeply into Jesus call to love God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Since 1890, St. James, The Episcopal Church in South Pasadena, has been an active, welcoming parish, serving its members and reaching out to the community and beyond to offer prayer, support, and love. 2 ALL KIDS ARE GOD S KIDS 2 Sundays We meet every Sunday morning promptly at 10:10 am in Children s Chapel for a ten to fifteen minute gathering time with Children s Ministry Director, Mary Chalon. Afterwards, children are guided to their respective age appropriate programs in both Godly Play for younger children and Weaving God s Promises for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders for approximately thirty minutes. Then, all children are escorted into the Church to join their families for Eucharist and they remain with them until the end of the service. As the year goes on, we will update you as to lessons covered in our programs each month, and news about any special events for children. Our goal continues to be to offer children an opportunity to develop their spirituality in the Episcopal tradition in a safe, nurturing, and imaginative environment in our community. We foster an atmosphere of inquiry and exploration, using Biblical story, play, music, drawing, liturgical practice, and as the children mature, we introduce them to the Book of Common Prayer and Episcopal practices. Children engaging with the Godly Play presentation of The Loaves and The Fishes PRE-K THROUGH SIXTH GRADE OUR LEVEL ONE ATRIUM is perfectly suited for our youngest children and is frequently led by our extraordinary volunteer teachers, who are certified in Godly Play. OUR LEVEL TWO ATRIUM is for our First through Third graders, and is led by volunteers as well as Mary Chalon, our Director of Children s Ministry. OUR FOURTH, FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADERS will be guided by the Weaving God s Promises curriculum, which can be accessed online at weavinggodspromises.org. We will build upon Godly Play lessons explored in PreK through third grades. By Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth grades, literacy is more sophisticated, and the children are both prepared and developmentally ready to take on this next step. NURSERY CARE is available every Sunday for infants in the nursery room, (adjacent to the Sanctuary), and toddler care is available in the toddler room, upstairs in the Parish Hall building. We have four certified and very qualified child care workers to look after infants and toddlers every Sunday. Child Care is also provided after the church service for those children until 12:30 p.m. each Sunday. PARENTS We provide many opportunities for parent participation and volunteering in Children s Ministry. We always need Sunday volunteers and assistance at Children s Passover (Palm Sunday), the Easter Egg Hunt (Easter Sunday), Advent Family Night, the Christmas Eve Children s Pageant and several more. QUESTIONS? Feel free to contact Mary Chalon, Director of Children s Ministries, at Chaldav3@aol.com or call (626) for further information.

3 ALL KIDS ARE GOD S KIDS Sundays SEVENTH THROUGH TWELFTH GRADES AWAKEN: A MINISTRY FOR THE YOUTH OF ST. JAMES Adolescence is a precarious stage of life. The programs for youth at St. James aim to come alongside our young people; to share life with them; to provide caring adult relationships; and above all, to form them in Christ to be his disciples in the world. 7th 12th graders meet most Sundays at 10:15 for Awaken, our liturgical service for youth. We spend time reading scripture, praying, and sharing with one another. The service uses music, film, and art to meet students where they are and bring the light of Jesus there. We rejoin the main congregation for Communion. For more information, please contact the Church office at (626) Ongoing opportunities for Children and Youth ST. JAMES PARISH DAY SCHOOL The first five years of a child s life are the most important ones. We believe that play is the work of children. Our school is honored to be accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and certified by the Episcopal Commission on Schools. The school accepts children at 2 years 9 months through 5 years old with an exceptional Kindergarten program. Our extraordinary teachers create a rich, stimulating curriculum, which prepares each child for their next level of education. Our program nurtures and encourages the children so that they grow socially, emotionally, spiritually, and intellectually. St. James strives to create a school environment of compassion, respect, friendship and community. We offer extended care options and after school enrichment classes conducted by our current talented teachers. 3 Join us for a school tour by visiting our website at You will enjoy watching our children thrive and see for yourself that St James Parish Day School is truly a loving place to learn! For more information, please contact Kim Goodrich, Director, at (626) St. James Living Nativity on the corner of Fremont and Monterey! THE YOUTH CENTER AT ST. JAMES The Youth Center at St. James is a community center open to students in grades 6 8. Our goals are to provide a safe and supervised place for middle and high school students, and also to engage them in new activities. Students are provided snacks after school followed by a quiet 40 minute homework lab. We also offer arts and crafts, organized indoor/outdoor sports, board games, and cooking classes! THE COLLEGE PROGRAM AT ST. JAMES YOUTH CENTER offers workshops open to all high school students and parents (when applicable). Workshops will address college preparation and admissions. Together we agreed upon the importance of making space at the table for everyone, and that this begins one conversation at a time. In August, we continued this conversation by starting a dinner group that would meet on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30. Gatherings will be flexible and will look different each month; the idea is to talk with one another, get to know each other better, consider a prepared theme, perhaps read a book, invite speakers from time to time, and enjoy being with one another at the table.
