ALTAR FLOWERS OR SANCTUARY CANDLE If you would like to purchase altar flowers or a sanctuary candle in honor of or in memory of a loved one, please call the parish office. Please keep in mind that altar flowers and sanctuary candles may be purchased to honor the living as well as the deceased. They may also serve to convey thanksgiving for prayers answered or to celebrate occasions such as anniversaries and birthdays. The Word Ezekiel 2:2-5 As the Lord spoke to me, the spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and I heard the one who was speaking say to me: Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, rebels who have rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have revolted against me to this very day. Hard of face and obstinate of heart are they to whom I am sending you. But you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord God! And whether they heed or resist for they are a rebellious house they shall know that a prophet has been among them. 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong. Mark 6:1-6 A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house. So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. Copyright J. S. I ve now been a priest for 36 years. I m 62, and in any other life s work I could retire already. I beg everyone to pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood with young men like Father Dan Carr. The Church really needs YOUNG priests. If your children or grandchildren want to investigate any religious vocation, please support them in their discernment. Then I plan to serve this diocese as long as I have good health. However, I would like to retire at the legal age for priests; and I m hoping I won t be brought in every week on a stretcher with some of you having to extend my hands over the bread and wine and saying the words of consecration for me by whispering them in my ear. So, I congratulate Father Dan, and I assure him and all who follow him into the priesthood, of my prayers and support for their good health and success. Father McGuirk Jeremiah Days (Grades 6-8) Gather for a Saturday morning of prayer, fellowship and talk on discernment. Sept. 8, Nov. 10, 9:30-11:30 a.m. St. Barbara Church, 111 Raymaley Road, Harrison City Parents and/or Guardians are also invited to attend. Now The Melchizedek Project (Grades 9-12) Gather for a Sunday evening for Exploring God s Call. Sept. 9, Oct. 14, Nov. 18, Dec. 9 6:30-8 p.m. Greensburg Central Catholic High School Pray for Vocations For more information or to make a reservation for one of the above sessions, contact Father Tyler Bandura at: vocations@dioceseofgreensburg.org
4 PARISH AND COMMUNITY NEWS Pardon the Mess and Inconvenience! Please be aware that the Kitchen renovation is now underway in the Social Hall. Therefore, we cannot host funeral luncheons until further notice. For safety reasons, we also ask that you please refrain from entering the church basement unless you need to use the restroom. The finished product will be well worth the wait! DUE TO HIPAA, area hospitals can no longer tell pastors which parishioners have been admitted. 5 MORE COMMUNITY AND DIOCESAN NEWS We are in need of advertisers to fill in the empty spots on the back page of the bulletin. If you, or anyone you know, would be interested in placing an ad, please contact Mary Ann Klingensmith at for information on layout and pricing. REGARDING ANOTHER BULLETIN-RELATED ISSUE: We are looking for someone who would be willing and able to take over handling the advertising for the bulletin. Mary Ann Klingensmith has voluntarily handled this for many years, and she would like to hand over the responsibility to another capable volunteer by the end of this year. Please call her if you are interested in taking over this important task. She will teach you the process, which is not complicated. THE FR. GILBERT STRAUB COUNCIL 8452 OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS is pleased to announce that with our help, Life Choices/My Choice opened the first Pro-Life Ultrasound Facility in Greensburg on July 3. A team of Brother Knights from our Council helped with painting the facility and donated some of the furniture; the Knights paid $35,900 for the Ultrasound machine. Prior to the opening, our Council delivered six large bins of baby items collected at Holy Cross to help support the mothers who chose life. Life Choices and our Council cannot thank our Parishioners enough for their generosity. Thank you for helping to choose life! The Rosary Altar Society of Saint Paul Parish in Greensburg will be holding its annual Trash n Treasure Sale on Friday, July 20 (9am-7pm), Saturday, July 21 (9am-7pm) with ½ off starting this day, and Sunday, July 22 (10am-2pm). A special Early Bird preview will be held on Thursday, July 19, from 6-8 p.m. for a $5 admission. There will be a $5 Bag Sale on Monday, July 23 from 9am- 1pm. (Jewelry and Big Items will be ½ off original sticker price). The deadline for dropping off items for this event is Thursday, July 12. For more information, please contact the Church Office at Protecting God s Children An Update from Carol Kalich Since 2015 when the law changed, 133 parishioners have completed the clearance process required of volunteers and are in compliance with Pennsylvania s Child Protective Services Law. Thank you for your diligence in completing the six requirements. Another 49 have started the process but have not completed all six requirements. Also, I ve learned that some have helped at the parish festival who have not even started the clearance process. Volunteers 18 and older must complete these before helping at the festival or serving in a liturgical ministry. The trainings inform volunteers about the threats to children as well as the elderly and handicapped and how to report suspected abuse, and help the parish ensure a safe environment for the vulnerable among us. Three of the six clearances are good for five years: The other three clearances are trainings and do not need to be repeated: State Police Criminal Background Check ChildLine Child Abuse History Certification Volunteer Affidavit (fingerprints if resident of PA less than 10 years} Mandated Reporter Training Virtus/Protecting God s Children Greensburg Diocese s Code of Pastoral Conduct If you have a computer, all but the affidavit can be done online. There are paper forms for the three clearances which the parish will submit for processing. In the coming weeks we will hold additional sessions for the mandated reporter training and Virtus with distribution of the Code of Pastoral Conduct. Some of you may already have some of these clearances done because of your job. As long as they are dated 2015 or later, we can make a copy and use them for the parish records. If you are a volunteer who has not started the clearance process, please contact me for copies of the forms and web addresses. Call and leave a message at or me at ckalich@dioceseofgreensburg.org. If you have started but not finished the six requirements, Father McGuirk and I will be in contact with you to help you finish them. Father McGuirk and I know these are a lot of hoops to go through to help the parish as a liturgical minister or to work at a once-ayear event like the festival. But the parishes and diocese are audited by the Commonwealth and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to make sure we are meeting the requirements of the law. So we encourage you to do the clearances and trainings to begin or continue in ministry here at Holy Cross Parish.
